You are Eddie Hearn : Groves re-match, Ward or Hopkins ?
Carl Froch said in an interview with sky " it's not up to me who i fight " and then added " But i will fight anyone "
It seems a daft statement to make considering that he is the one getting in the ring. I think he uses that line to avoid giving a definate answer over whether he will give Groves a re-match. He also say's " if it makes sense, if it's what people want " which again is a pretty daft statement, because the obvious answer is yes. For me, the only fight next for Carl Froch is a re-match with Groves. Financially it makes sense, there is a huge stain over the first fight because of the premature stoppage and quite frankly, Froch won't ever be able to look people in the eye unless he gives Groves another fight. We all know that Groves outclassed Froch in nearly every round, apart from possibly the 8th and 9th round and that happenned primarliy because Groves decided to front up Froch and trade with him. If Groves had stuck to the game plan of the first six rounds he would have beaten Froch. It's not definate that Froch would have stopped Groves after the debacle of the 9th round either.
Froch say's that he was pleased with his performance and that he always comes on strong in the championship rounds. He say's he was breaking Groves down and it was only a matter of time before he stopped him. Really ?? I thought it was a shocking performance from Froch. Yes, he does seem to have more zest as a fight goes on, but was he really breaking Groves down or was it more that Groves decided to trade, drop his hands and Froch caught him a few times and roughed him up a bit. Froch talks as if everything was all in hand and going to plan. He must know what we know and must have a similar viewpoint to us, because he has watched the same fight now and we all know what happenned. A Groves re-match would make millions, it would go a long way to erasing the the stoppage on the first fight. Froch would be better prepared and Groves won't have the suprise factor anymore, so in many respects it could be said to be a more level fight. Whoever won would be acknowledged as the best fighter of the two, it would be another good fight because of the styles and overall it would stamp out a lot of the confusion and uncertainty and unresolved emotions associated with the first fight.
In some ways, this fight has now over shadowed any re-match with Ward. That fight would be a bore fest at the side of any fight with Groves. I doubt that Ward would come to Britain anyway and if that fight was made people wouldn't be that excited about it and would feel slightly cheated. I don't think the fight would make good financial numbers either, primarily becasue Ward would want big numbers for leaving home territory. I think also that Ward would win any re-match, though it may be by a smaller margin. Then there is old man Hopkins. Maybe a catch weight fight or Hopkins coming down to 168lbs. Hopkins, though a legend, doesn't have the same allure as he used to do. Many would expect Froch to beat him and yet i can see Hopkins giving Froch a few nightmares and making him look ordinary again. I don't think a fight with Hopkins would excite an audience and Froch wouldn't gain the same credence as Calzaghe did for his win over Hopkins. Also and yet again, i don't think the financial figures would be particularly great. Doesn't it scream out " GROVES RE-MATCH !!! ???
So, you are Eddie Hearn and Carl Froch ask's you a simple question " Who should i fight and why ? " What do you say ??

Re: You are Eddie Hearn : Groves re-match, Ward or Hopkins ?
I agree with you on all points raised.
To answer your question, it has to be Groves. Hearn agrees which is a good sign for the fans.
If it is any of the three names you mention: Groves, Ward or Hopkins, Froch will loose a wide points UD. Given that he looked quite vulnerable against Groves, I, and I think many others, would not be shocked to see Groves stop him in a rematch. The smart money would be on a Groves points win, but a KO is not out of the equation next time around.
The Froch v Groves rematch has to happen, it just has to!

Ward in Vegas would be the wrong fight for Carl, he lost clearly the last time and Ward has improved!
From the sounds of things he's not giving George another chance. Oh well Groves vs Steiglitz would be all action.

Re: You are Eddie Hearn : Groves re-match, Ward or Hopkins ?
Neither Ward nor Hopkins will come to the UK to fight, both will demand the thick end of the financials and the fight would have to be shown at stupid o'clock UK time.
The Groves fight will be easy to make, in front of a huge live crowd and at prime time UK. It really is a non-decision.

Financially it has to be the rematch.
PR wise it has to be the rematch.
I said before and I'll say it again I wouldn't be surprised if Carl calls it a day.

Re: You are Eddie Hearn : Groves re-match, Ward or Hopkins ?
More money overall, but surely Chavez, being the "star", will negotiate the majority of that? Would Team Froch really be that much better off?Dead Mouse wrote:There's a fair bit of myopic thinking going on this week, a Vegas fight Vs Chavez nets far more money than a UK fight with Groves. The site and TV fee will bring more in.
And I didn't think Froch wanted to move up to Cruiserweight just yet!!
Re: You are Eddie Hearn : Groves re-match, Ward or Hopkins ?
It depends on how Hearn's looks at it. What if Froch beats George again? Two loses for George doesn't do anyone any good. Hearn and Froch are apparently close friends, he may think lets give him couple winnable voluntaries to enhance Froch's bank balance. Sign up George and focus on getting George big fights next year.
Re: You are Eddie Hearn : Groves re-match, Ward or Hopkins ?
that's a big possibility. hearns and froch may be friends at the moment but that will go when froch retires. have you thought that hearn wants the rematch, knowing groves will win and then sign up george ? froch is just a cash cow foe eddie and he only has two fights left maxzero wrote:It depends on how Hearn's looks at it. How do people know a groves fight will create millions?? It's big over here but is the worldwide audience there??
Chavez jnr has a huge following & how froch looked against George I think everyone fancies it with him now after that shalacking.

Re: You are Eddie Hearn : Groves re-match, Ward or Hopkins ?
Eddie Hearn's incentives: 1.Money 2.Froch's well-being(?) 3. Froch's legacy (?)4.Money
The Groves fight makes the most money for Matchroom. If he really cares about Froch's well being, fights with JCC Jnr and Ward might be more viable.
But he must know his charge gets schooled by Ward again and for less money. The JJC Jnr fight could be a real money spinner but:
1.It won't be in England
2. Might not even be on a Matchroom Promotion and at best would be a joint promotion with TopRank.
3. Won't make as make as much money as a Groves fight for Matchroom
4. If JCC Jnr actually can actually be arsed to get into shape, it's a potentially damaging fight.

Re: You are Eddie Hearn : Groves re-match, Ward or Hopkins ?
I'm sure Froch has been earning rather well since teaming up with Eddie as for whether they will be friends after Carl retires, they will probably keep in-touch. I believe Hearn is in it for the long run, and I doubt Matchroom Sport are worrying about finances that much to squeeze Froch for every penny they can. Their priority should be getting Groves signed up and focusing on him moving forward.Quix wrote:that's a big possibility. hearns and froch may be friends at the moment but that will go when froch retires. have you thought that hearn wants the rematch, knowing groves will win and then sign up george ? froch is just a cash cow foe eddie and he only has two fights left maxzero wrote:It depends on how Hearn's looks at it. Nutshell, give Froch his swansong and help Groves to be the next big thing.
Re: You are Eddie Hearn : Groves re-match, Ward or Hopkins ?
The rematch would sell much better than the first fight imo, has an excellent back story, and the tables have turned because Groves is going to go into the fight favourite in my opinion.
But the truth is, Froch doesn't really want it. Losing to Groves, potentially getting stopped, tarnishes his legacy. Chavez Jnr is a much easier fight, and an easier payday. He wants to experience the big time Vegas fights like Hatton & Khan have, but it's dangerous ground for Froch, because that's not really about sporting achievement anymore.

Definetly not Ward or Hopkins...maybe Chavez Jr...Definetly Groves
Re: You are Eddie Hearn : Groves re-match, Ward or Hopkins ?
Hope it's not Ward as when Froch loses and retires it would be hard for Groves to get the belts!

Hurlock,
How many PPV's would you guess this fight did ?
How many PPV's do you think a rematch would do ?
You don't think the fight will create millions ?
Which planet are you on ?
If the PPV does 750k that's 11,212,500.

I think Groves deserves a rematch - but do I think it will happen? nope not yet anyhow.
Both will have fights before they meet each other in the summer.

I never said it wouldn't generate. But there's bigger options out there for froch if he chooses.
Groves IMO needs some good 12 rounders under his belt. He's a big talent & should be around for a while

I think the rematch makes sense financially, of course it does.Parson Cross wrote:Hurlock,

But how many times in the past have you seen a champion in the past have a tough fight and wanting f*ck all to do with a rematch.
In my opinion there are a lot of fights out there for Froch, whilst Groves 2 is something I want to see, I just believe Team Froch may not take it.
Re: You are Eddie Hearn : Groves re-match, Ward or Hopkins ?
re-match or retire, simple as, Froch hasn't got a hope in hell against Ward, him against Hopkins would make for a dire fight, Chavez? Who cares about watching that?
Re: You are Eddie Hearn : Groves re-match, Ward or Hopkins ?
I personally would be very suprised if Froch retired. At the very most, he only has three fights left in him considering that each fight takes up about six months. I honestly think that if Froch doesn't give Groves a re-match it will damage his reputation and legacy way more than if he does give him a re-match and loses the fight. Froch is a proud guy and he knows that the fight left a huge amount of unresolved issues. He also knows that people won't swallow his post fight PR crap about being happy with his performance. I think a second fight will be a lot closer and i would possibly even edge towards Froch winning it, but regardless of the outcome, that fight has to be made, it really does.

I will answer the question in the thread title ....
Boxing is a business, over the last 3 years I learnt one hell of at lot and so if I was Eddie Hearn ...
Whatever is the perceived easiest fight for the maximum amount of money is the fight I would make.
In my view that would be Hopkins or Chavez in Vegas.

Re: You are Eddie Hearn : Groves re-match, Ward or Hopkins ?
You see groves as a harder fight then Hopkins !!
Froch's next defeat will mean retirement, so he has to go for what's best & Hearn has said it's his job to secure the best deals for his fighters.
Happy returns spud!
