Seamus wrote:Louis never saw anything in his career like Holmes' jab. As the old boxing cliche goes, Holmes would get him drunk and mug him. Holmes TKO 13.
holmes never faced a all around puncher like joe louis, holmes was a sucker for right hands and was tagged numerous times during his career. holmes was staggered alot but the opponents that tagged him werent much finishers. joe louis would finish him
louis would get hit by holmes jab but not that much. he would parry it a lot. i think holmes should be more concerned with louis combinations than louis should about homes jab
Holmes was also an excellent combination puncher, and in his prime he was on the canvas fewer times than Louis. Louis had a relatively harder time against boxers than punchers, so we can only imagine what might have happened if Billy Conn could hit. And on the subject of punchers, I'll take a guy who survived Earnie Shavers shots over anything Louis could throw.

renaldo snipes nearly knocked holmes out, who wasnt that big a puncher. if snipes knew how to finish he would have put holmes awaySeamus wrote:Holmes was also an excellent combination puncher, and in his prime he was on the canvas fewer times than Louis. - holmes would not be able to take louis combinations which were far more deadly than one shavers right hand. sure he took one shavers right hand, but so did lyle. It was joe louis deadly combinations that knocked you out. only time holmes faced a puncher like louis was tyson and we all know what happened.
Joe Louis power shots were absolutely paralyzing. If one carefully studies Louis films one notices that his shocking punches momentarily freeze his opponents. Once stunned they are then finished off with some of the greatest rapid-fire combination punching in boxing history. His punching accuracy was the best ever seen in a heavyweight boxer, which is why many boxing historians consider him as the greatest offensive fighter amongst the all time heavyweights.
Ring Magazine founder Nat Fleischer writing in the April 1939 Ring Magazine said, "No human body can take the punishment that Jolting Joe dishes out once he goes after his prey. That has been proved conclusively in his last few contests." No human body. It didn’t matter how big they were.
larry holmes had trouble with counterpunchers and no doubt he would have trouble with joe louis. alsoi joe louis had an incredible jab and would give holmes problems with it as well. louis would parry holmes jab well, and stalk holmes waiting for holmes to let down his gaurd for one split second and then louis will counter with the fastet, most deadly, most accurate combinationss holmes has ever seen leaving him out on the canvas.
louis was severely dehdrated vs conn, and if u know what it feels like to be badly dehydrated u know the effect it would have on ur preformance.
Granted, Conn's movement bothered Louis. However, it was to Conn's advantage that he was only 170 pounds. This made it easier for him to get away and escape tight spots versus Louis. Louis was more vulnerable to fighters smaller in stature because they provided less of a target. It was fighters his size or bigger that he devastated.

A very tough match up. Holmes had the jab, the better recuperative powers, defecne and movement, Joe had the power, the variety of punches and had an advantage in handspeed.
I think Holmes' jab would take the first 2-3 rounds but I can see Joe winning a big round or two forcing Holmes to box and keep the jab out. I don't see Holmes getting stopped. Bringing up the Tyson fight is a bit like bringing up Joe's Marciano fight, it's pretty much irrelevant.
I pick Joe to win a close decision because the rounds he wins are more decisive than the one's Holmes wins. I'm not sure anyone had such a range of text book punches as Louis did. The jab, the right, the hook are almost picture perfect.

Holmes could outjab Louis, and would for the first 5 rounds or so.
But let us remember that Louis was the best finisher and fastest combination puncher in history.
Holmes's close class vs the likes of Weaver, Witherspoon, Snipes, and Shavers would seem like Little League once Joe connected with a left hook and followed up.
Holmes would be seriously hurt. Joe's combinations would nullify Holmes's awesome recuperative powers, and ensure that Larry stayed hurt . . .for 10 seconds.
Louis KO 9.

I like Joe Louis by late round KO. I think that Holmes would be content to use his jab to try and keep Joe off, but Louis was relentless and he would use his handspeed to land some blistering combinations inside the guard that would eventually wear Holmes out. Louis had problems with movers and quickness, not Holmes's strong suit.
Holmes was a cautious fighter and I don't think he would go for the kill against Joe Louis, which in my view is the only way he would beat Louis by turning it into a brawl where Louis didn't have time to use his leverage on those accurate, stinging punches.

Re: Joe Louis vs Larry Holmes
You got to be stupid, Holmes has never been knocked out in his prime and he has faced the likes of Earnie Shavers, Cooney, Bonecrusher, Weaver who all punch harder shot for shot than Louis and Holmes stopped all these opponens.BrocktonBlockbuster49 wrote:Joe Louis KO 7
Holmes KO 9. Bill Conn stunned Louis in the 13th round, and look at his kayo ratio, Louis also has been dropped by Buddy Baer, Tony Galento plus a whole other both of contenders and knocked out by Schmeling.
Re: Joe Louis vs Larry Holmes
I bet you think Razor Ruddock would KO Joe Louis and Larry Holmes in the same night if those fights ever took place. I imagine your picks for Ruddock against some of the greats would look like this:RazorKO wrote:You got to be stupid, Holmes has never been knocked out in his prime and he has faced the likes of Earnie Shavers, Cooney, Bonecrusher, Weaver who all punch harder shot for shot than Louis and Holmes stopped all these opponens.BrocktonBlockbuster49 wrote:Joe Louis KO 7

vs. Joe Louis: KO 2. "Joe Louis got knocked down by Tony Galento. Galento couldn't have smelt Ruddock's jock strap, and since Galento knocked down Louis, Ruddock would knock Louis through the ropes with a double smash."
vs. Jack Dempsey: KO 1. "Dempsey never fought a black fighter in his title reign and Ruddock was black. That means Ruddock would beat him. Dempsey couldn't smash, either."
vs. Rocky Marciano: TKO 4. "Marciano was a smelly little man and Ruddock would clip him with his smash! Ruddock smash! Did I ever tell you Ruddock was the best?"
vs. Muhammad Ali: TKO by 1. "Someone took Ruddock's money and he didn't get to fight in his hometown so the odds were clearly against him. No fighter could fight under those circumstances!"
vs. Sonny Liston: TKO by 6. "He was winning, hitting Liston with huge shots but he couldn't put him away. He was just about to in the sixth when he had an asthma attack and started crying. Plus his brother stole his food stamps at the weigh-in."
It is hard to take what you say seriously when you play pocket pool with an average fighter like Donovan Ruddock. Start analyzing intelligently THEN you can start calling other people stupid for having an opinion.
Damn, Gerrie Cooney hit harder than Joe Louis? To each their own, right? I wouldn't even favor Razor Ruddock over BoxBuzz's charge Rob Galloway. Galloway KO 1 Ruddock, but only because Ruddock stubbed his toe while climbing through the ropes.

LMAO
Holmes has never been KO'ed in his prime but STILL people say Louis KO7 or Lewis TKO 12 etc. Holmes has taken punches from as I said Shavers, Cooney etc and they all punch WAY harder than a 195 pound Louis. It is hard to take what you say seriously when you play pocket pool with an average fighter like Donovan Ruddock.
As for Ruddock, if he was average, than Holyfield and Foreman must be worse as they avoided him like the plague. And Tyson must be average as well as Tyson admitted Ruddock was one of the toughest and THE hardest puncher hes ever faced.

hahaha. Holyfield avoided Ruddock? How? B/c Ruddock earned a Evander fight by losing to Tyson twice and getting starched by Tommy Morrison???RazorKO wrote:Holmes has never been KO'ed in his prime but STILL people say Louis KO7 or Lewis TKO 12 etc. Holmes has taken punches from as I said Shavers, Cooney etc and they all punch WAY harder than a 195 pound Louis. It is hard to take what you say seriously when you play pocket pool with an average fighter like Donovan Ruddock.

Louis weighed about 205 in his prime. Yet Shavers at 210 punches WAY harder??? Mike Weaver was smaller then Louis and he rung Larry's bell pretty well . . .
You choke on your own argument . . .

aw cmon guys.. its louis hereeee... louis is the second greatest heavyweight of all time and i think he would have the ability to take down holmes. Louis was a rather large heavyweight, weighing in at over 210 in his prime (thanks Brockton), so i think that holmes loses the huge weight advantage that modern heavy's have. Louis would swarm holmes and would be absoltley relentless in his attack. i dont think holmes would be quick enough to continuously escape louis like ali would.
Joe Louis catches Holmes In the 8-9 round with a right hook to finish a brutal swarming job by louis

Holmes was almost sent out by Renaldo Snipes.....Let me say it again....Renaldo Snipes. Now Snipes could not follow up because he got lucky and Renaldo couldnt find his ass with both hands. However Just like the Iron Chinned Ali it could happen, it just takes the right set of circumstances. Joe just might provide that right set of circumstances.
Both Louis and Holmes have the power to knock each other out. Holmes was accosstumed to fighting good big heavyweights who hit hard. Louis wasnt small, but all the big heavyweights he fought didnt have very good skills, and all the good fighters he fought were cruserweights or below. Those crusierweight fighters, when they landed on Louis were able to hurt him. I couldnt imagine for example a fighter like Conn who weighed slightly below the lightheavy limit when he fought Louis being able to outfight and hurt Holmes the way he did Louis.
The bottom line for me was that both fighters were great but holmes had the longer reach, better jab, better mobility, and what i believe was the ability to take Louis's punches better than Louis would have taken his.
Holmes tko mid to late rounds.
