In his next fight, on August 18, 1936, Joe Louis kayoed another former heavyweight champ, this time it was Jack Sharkey, in three rounds. Sharkey, who also fought Jack Dempsey, compared the two men and was not impressed by the Brown Bomber: “Every time Louis hit me, he said, ‘Sorry.’ Every time Jack Dempsey hit me, he said, ‘How come you’re not dead yet?’” Sharkey added, “I was the only fighter to fight Dempsey and Louis. Who hit me hardest? Dempsey hit me the hardest because Dempsey hit me $211,000 worth while Louis only hit me $36,000 worth.”

my dad went fishing with jack sharkey and my dad asked him who was better louis or dempsey , sharkey said "you gotta watch out for there left hooks". Thats all he said.

Dempsey seems to have somewhat past his prime by the time he fought Sharkey so isn't it possible his punches would have been less devastating then when he was at his peak?

By the way, I seem to recall Max Schmelling mentioning that he had sparred with Dempsey.

Here are some great punches from Tyson:

Botha ( Stewart called it one of the perfect punches in boxing history)
Etinne ( Wooooow)
Jack Johnson ( he broke his jaw with that punch) and so on......

And there were many fighters who said that ty<son punches extremly hard.

Frank Bruno ( "He has nuklear-energie in both hands!") , Spinks and Francis (" I have never been hit that hard!") , Savarese ( "The punch was unbeleaveble!") , William Hosea , who lied on the floor and cried loudly ( " This smeg hits like a sledge hammer!") or Eddie Richardson after the repoter asked him , if he was ever hit as hard as Tyson did:" Yes , one year ago ,when i was rocked by a lorry!"

Or the Tyson-Frazier fight. After it the Referee Joe Cortez said that he has never been seen a fighter , who hits as hard as tyson!!!

..curtis shepard was the only man to knock maxim out. he caught him in the first round. three weeks later maxim outpointed him. (rematches came a bit sooner then.) shapard also broke an opponents collar bone with a punch.

Holmes said that he felt Tyson's punch more so thgan anyone else he faced...he said he did not feel when Shavers hit him...which would either mean that it wasn't the heaviest shot, or it was so heavy a shot that it just rebooted Holmes enitre system...I would lean toward the latter!

50s lightweight champion, Jimmy Carter said that Columbus lightweight Willie Russell hit him the hardest and was his most difficult fight...up to 1952, so that may have changed being that Carter fought several more years, but I haven't read anything to counter it...I know Russell was a hell of a fighter though...too bad little to no people know who he is.

Most of his fights were there.

He lost 10-round decisions there to three fighters who were top level lightweight champions--

Ike Williams, Jimmy Carter, and Joe Brown.

Jimmy Carter was the best finisher of hurt fighters I ever saw.

Max Schmeling once was quoted as saying that Joe Louis wasn't the hardest puncher he ever faced, but a German fighter named Max Diekman hit him the hardest, that Diekman caught him on his ear and his ear began to bleed immediately.

Interesting, considering Louis blew away Schmeling in one single round in one of the most brutal fights the world has ever seen---but I guess in all fairness, Schmeling was somewhat passed his best, even when he fought Louis the first time around, though he did later become the champion of his native Germany again after his defeat at the hands of Louis.

That tells you something when you consider that he took flush Right hands from Hearns, who had one of the hardest single shots in boxing history.

Dempsey toured Germany when Schmeling was an upstart light-heavyweight in the mid-1920s and they fought a couple of exhibition rounds. I believe they also did exhibition rounds in the early 1930s, when Dempsey was actually retired.

Brockton is right, the young Max Schmeling (left) looked like a carbon copy of Jack Dempsey (right), 10 years his senior.

You're the only person around here that lies compulsively...that's why you are always having to make up new lies to cover the old lies you have told...so many that you have forgotten what it is that you lied about, which is why I said that honesty is the only way, so if you would take my direction about honesty the same way you have taken my direction about microfilm research then you might even gain some respect from a few people. Marciano certainly was sloppy finishing old, old lightheavyweight Archie Moore.

Nat Fleischer didn't think much of Marciano after that performance.
