My grandfather Sam "Tango" Debney, a pupil of Owen Moran, fought Ernie Rice in 1919 at the National Sporting Club and gave him a broken rib. The fight lasted 12 rounds and was ended when the referee intervened.

The correspondent describes the fight as a "hurricane battle" and "one of the fiercest slams ever seen at headquarters".

Thank you, the date was Monday 17 February 1919 - based on the paper being dated 19 Feb (Wednesday) with a heading "All Monday's Results"
