Hearns v Roldan - forgotten classic

Just rewatched this to remind myself of Hearns' power - what a fight that was, actually better than Hagler v Hearns for two way action, Hearns was in desperate trouble at various points, took some massive shots from Roldan, and fought a crazy fight, trying to outmacho him and managed to pull out the win.

It was a great fight mate, although watching it at the time, I was really nervous as Hearns was one of two favourite fighters. I remember the press thinking he was chinny after that one and then saying he was shot after the Kinchen fight. Beating Virgil Hill is one of Tommy's best performances IMO.

Yes, totally agree - Hill was a master boxer, and hearns outboxed him. Hearns had that long thin neck, he was always vulnerable - but that power and speed got him out of hot water many times.

I think part of Hearns problem, was he actually loved a tear-up, despite the fact he wasn't the most robust. he wanted to hit and annihilate his opponents, and more often than not did. At the highest level though, that tendency cost him. Christ, just looked at his record, and even way past his best post Hill, at cruiserweight, he was still icing guys in a round or two, quite phenomenal considering he was at 190.

Hearns was beating Barkley to a pulp, but just left his chin hanging there for a bit too long, and the rest was history. I think Hearns expected people to fall when he landed that big right, because frankly, almost all of them did. Tough guys like Kinchen, Roldan, Barkley, and of course Hagler, were a big problem.

Would have loved to see him fight Mugabe, that would have been a brutal tussle.

Remember most fighters from my dad's ring & ko mag's,the ones that allway's stand out to me were hearns & hagler, I loved the look of hagler as a kid, he looked as strong as he was!
Salvador Sanchez & his big fro stands out, as does ray Mancini, the 80's were probably the best after the 50's.

Coincidentally, I watched this fight last week. Brutal fight and some truly vicious punches by Hearns.

Some of those rights Roldan absorbed were breathtaking!!!!!

Hearns also destroyed the much bigger Andries at lt heavy. Also he gave Leonard a boxing lesson second time round but was robbed

Hearns boxing skills are forgotten sometimes when looking at his career, he beat top pure boxers in Wilfred Benetiz, Virgil Hill, Michael Olajide and Sugar Ray (Ok it was a scored a draw). But these were all on points, proving what skills he had to go with the big punch.
