Lost 98-93, 98-93, 98-92. Ormond just outworked him, especially late on. He was like a buzzsaw, fighting in bursts of 6 or 7 punches and from round 6 on, couldn't miss with the right hand over the top. Excellent performance from him.

He's definitely not world class for sure, but I think Derry just has his number and style wise is all wrong for him, which is why I don't understand why they want the Burns fight. He's less aggressive, but he's taller than Mathews, has a better jab and is all round better in every department. Have to take nothing away from Ormond tonight though, the desire was incredible, 100 miles an hour all fight without tiring, those burst of punches were incredible and he kept them up well in to the last round and actually managed to up the pace as the fight went on. You could see how much it meant by his and his team, plus seemingly half the Collins family's celebrations after the announcement of the decision.

Good win for Ormond.

The decision of his fight with Appelby still makes me cringe.

Many questioned Matthews' decision (and integrity) to go his separate ways from David Coldwell and Matchroom and sign a promotional agreement with Francis Warren. It was only ever going to be a good gig for Matthews if he could overcome the live banana skin that was Ormond. Doesn't look like a smart move anymore (always seemed a daft one to me personally).

Let's see how his new promoter looks after him now. Well done Stephen Ormond - finished really strongly.

Matthews was outhustled and Ormond hit him plenty hard enough that he couldn't just go fro broke. Derry is still very good but it really depends on the style he is shown, he was devastating v Woodhouse and lacklustre v Coyle and v Ormond he was pressured back for long periods, Steven had bags of energy and threw too many for Derry to cope with.

Exactly - I cannot understand why Matthews moved .. Coldwell has done a bloody good job with him ... grass defo not greener on the other side in this case & I wonder how often he will fight now with Mr W*rren now he has lost, maybe used as perceived fodder now.

Matthews should have stayed where he was!!

I think it was poor promoting I think you look at Derry and in the right fights he is fantastic and exciting and pulls in the crowds. I dont think Stephen Ormond was the right guy for that? I assume it was decent money for Mathews but seemed like a bit of a strange opponent from the get go.

What does he gain from being matched against Ormond who was a dangerous fighter but hardly well known or supported for a title of little significance? I hear a rematch is in place for Feb-March according to Derry who is claiming an injured hand as the reason for his performance.

Just not a great fight promotionally IMO

I can understand his decision to move. Derry beat Crolla last year and some would say was unlucky only to get a draw in the rematch back in March. Since then Derry come through a tough fight with Coyle, which he ended in style, then another devastating win against Curtis Woodhouse. Derry believed he deserved a shot against Ricky Burns but was told Crolla was being maneuvered into a mandatory position to face Burns. Derry took this as a slap to the face and no longer wanted to be the measuring stick for the Matchroom roster.

On that showing Ormond would beat Crolla, he looked very fresh and very keen.

Beating Rees is more deservant than being outclassed by Coyle and beating Woodhouse. Though neither should get you a world title shot.

Derry sustained a broken hand in the second round. Looks like an op Monday morning.
Rematch already agreed for March when Derry's healed.
Derry won't use this as an excuse I'm sure just reporting the facts.

If there's a rematch in March Derry will be giving up the Commonwealth title, he was scheduled to fight Commey at the Echo on March 7th, but if he fights Ormond again I'd expect him to be stripped. Any rematch should be in Dublin really, Ormond deserves it after going to Derry's backyard and getting the win.

Why should he have stayed where he was? He probably got more money for last night than for two or three fights under Coldwell he was an oppenet for Matchroom fighters, he had more ambition than to be an opponent.

Derry didnt seem that up for it last night, no doubt the broken hand had aomething to do with that but Ormond was well up for it with great hand speed.

Good to see the judges score it correctly. If that was a Matchroom fighter would have probably been give a draw.
