Adam Fogerty - why did he quit boxing for rugby??
Hi
I have done some searching on here and the net, but curious as to why a fighter who went 18-1 and avenged his only loss which was on points and avenged it with a k.o gave up boxing.
Boxing is more lucrative than rugby to my knowledge, but I am not well versed in what rugby players earn (not that care tbh) - don't follow rugby.
Obviously he was athletic fit/determined/strong etc as he went on to play a high level of rugby and then went onto acting...
But just wondering why he didn't see where his boxing career could of taken him before quitting - shame he didn't push it further and then go into rugby ???
Anyway he's done well, pro boxer, high level rugby player and now actor - good luck to him.
Thanks.

If I remember rightly, he just preferred rugby.
Nice guy by all accounts.

Not in the in the vast majority of cases I would guess.mikiesb wrote:Hi

In Fogerty's case he was still below British title level so I doubt he was earning much, maybe he was a big ticket seller in smaller halls I don't know. But either way rugby would be a steady wage so it was probably easily the better/safer financial option.
But there are a lot of other reasons he might have switched. Maybe he took the option that would be better for his longterm health. Or maybe he didn't have faith in his ability to go above the level he was at, quick look at his record and he'd only fought a couple of opponents with winning records (no disrespect to the guy obviously)

He was obviously much better at Rugby, too. A top class player.Fat Git wrote:His dad was a pro rugby league player, rugby might have been his no 1 love.

I watched Fogarty box Tommy Morrison's brother (Timmy) at the Elephant and Castle in 1989, and to echo mercman's comments, Fogarty looked the part and he had Terry Lawless in his corner but he couldn't really fight.
Re: Adam Fogerty - why did he quit boxing for rugby??
I am from Halifax & saw him fight a few times.
He was a decent level rugby player then basically said I want to have a few fights & did. A bit similar to Curtis then went into acting.

He trained in Sheffield for a while and is remembered for sending Naz to the canvas (briefly)!

Re: Adam Fogerty - why did he quit boxing for rugby??
I know Adam. I asked him this question, it wouldn't be fair to go into detail but he was not happy with the contract situation he was under, and at that stage in his life he had the opportunity to walk away and prosper in another sport, which he did.
By the way Adam plays "Gorgeous George" in the movie Snatch - he's the big guy who fights Brad Pitt. He continues to have a good acting career. Last year he played a lead role in a nation shakespeare production that toured the country. It was a complete break away from what he's done before and he got rave reviews for it

Re: Adam Fogerty - why did he quit boxing for rugby??
mercman and jimjim especially - thank you both .
wasn't being nosey - just like to see people take their talent as far as they can .
unlike football (which sometimes is down to being spotted playing, and also a matter of opinion, and there's alot of "nepotism" there)
I like boxing/combat in general - you have no one to blame if you don't do well - if you are a good fighter and keep winning your fights there is a chance that you can become a champion - obviously it's very hard work and you have to beat who's in front of you !
Again thanks everyone and if someone got offered a better deal to play rugby vs boxing - makes sense.

Adam was in Snatch - gorgeous George, although he was not that gorgeous by then... I believe he snagged some coronation st actress who at the time was high profile - Tracy something?
Re: Adam Fogerty - why did he quit boxing for rugby??
Hi mercman,
I see boxing imo as more straightforward than football ...
Without going into specifics football, is really about being the right place at the right time young, being spotted, and being given
a chance to shine - it really pains me that some talent is wasted and not spotted/let go ... but more importantly kids/teenagers also need to realise when they are given a chance to shine/develop they should take it - they will probably regret it later on if they didn't try hard enough.
That said there have been some examples out there spotting talent - soccer idol (on sky) which was an open trial for chelsea/inter milan and some other things... - there needs to be more talents scouts out there "spotting football" talent and more open "trials"... - not just a shut shop because you haven't been invited or not been spotted playing for the best team/whatever... but that's another story.. !
Moving away from talking about football and talking about professional boxing specifically (won't talk about amateur boxing - that's a matter of opinion) - pro boxing if you begin to make your way through the ranks you will/should attract a decent promoter/manager who will develop you - again if you keep winning and keep progressing there should be no reason why you shouldn't progress - but i do agree with what you've said - there are other factors.. having a good manager to make the right fights, at the right time, knowing when to step up in class etc. etc.

Re: Adam Fogerty - why did he quit boxing for rugby??
He owns a chip shop in Huddersfield, just down the road from Chris Aston's gym.mercman wrote:I think it was a bit more than that. Adam Fogarty was a professional boxer before he became a pro rugby player and he was touted as a heavyweight prospect for a while. I think he was about 18 when I saw him fight - which is obviously very young to be a professional at heavyweight - and there was a bit of hype around Fogarty until he got outpointed by the frankly quite limited Paul Lister. As Bennie says, he had Terry Lawless in his corner back in the late 80s - and Lawless was a big name back then what with his association with Bruno and other top heavies like Mason and Notice.pyenest77 wrote:I am from Halifax & saw him fight a few times.

Curtis is a bit different. He was an established professional footballer before he turned to boxing. Curtis also seems to have done rather better than many expected, whereas in some ways Adam Fogarty didn't really live up to expectations as a boxer. Having said all this, Fogarty finished with a good record, went on to have a very decent rugby career, and he's done well with TV and film work so good luck to him. I also heard he had his own business, a restaurant or takeway, I think.

Re: Adam Fogerty - why did he quit boxing for rugby??
He does indeed own that fish & chip shop, I did some filming in it with Adam last year.
From what I can see its a sound business situation for him, he owns it, it is very successful, and is staffed by employees, and it allows him to pick and choose his acting projects without having to accept a well paid but unsuitable acting job. If his house and car are anything to go by, a lot of people would be buying themselves a chip shop.
His dad Terry was an excellent rugby player in the 60's and 70's.
