Zab Judah vs Wilfred Benitez - Best of 3

Post by gilgamesh »

2 of the most consistently, inconsistent guys ever at the top level. Looking great at their best, mediocre or downright sh*tty at their worst, and seemingly always going up and down, in their level of performance.

Who wins 2 out of 3 here? Is one of them able to consistent enough to take 2 in a row? If so...who?

Benitez might lose 4 rounds in 2 fights. I'd take him 10 out of 10. It's an all time great versus a good. Zab's best night loses to Wilfred's worst.

Out of three fights, Benitez would win four of them.

At least.

I think you have to squint your eyes really hard not to see 3 points decisions for Benitez. I think battling Wilfredo Rivera is more Zab's level.

Benitez wins the first two comfortably and questions why they even need a third fight.

I think it's as good as several of the hypotheticals proposed, just a little one sided.

Yeah one sided is not what I'm going for though.

I guess I was envisioning the fights being

Fight 1: Benitez at his best, Judah in mediocre mode
Fight 2: Judah at his best, Benitez in mediocre mode
Fight 3: ??????

At his(Judah's) absolute best, and Benitez at his worst, we do have to remember he was pretty much shot by 25, I guess I could see Judah catching him and overwhelming him early, I don't think it's completely impossible.

But just on a "good night/bad night" basis, I'd go with Benitez every time.

It's still 2-0, Benitez wasn't nearly as inconsistent as you're making him out to be. He didn't train consistently, but he would never lose to a guy like Judah.

When Wilfred was shot he was a Middleweight.

Fair enough Saad. In the case of Benitez I'm mostly going by what I've read about the guy mostly to be honest. I've never seen any of his good or great performances.

I've only seen the Benitez vs Leonard bout.

Palomino, Cervantes & Duran is a good start. You could call him top 50 all time, though I'd have him just outside of that. Have you really read people comparing him to Zab?

Though I may as well say I think Judah is one of the most consistent fighters of my lifetime. So we're just not on the same page with this one.

No I've never seen anyone comparing Benitez to Zab. Zab, I would say is consistently inconsistent...so I guess that's a sort of consistency.

I'll check out the fights you mentioned of Benitez soon :TU:

I guess he's inconsistent if you think he's better than he's ever shown to be. He loses to the elite fighters he faces and goes tooth and nail with the next rung like Corley, Clottey, Baldomir, Spinks, etc..

His effort is almost always the same. Though that was pathetic Saturday night.

Enjoy, all spectacular showings. The Cervantes fight is something that will never be duplicated. We've seen our only 17 yr old world champion.

I wondering why you think people would pay to watch Benitez beat up Judah three times . . .

the Maurice Hope fight is worht a look, and i think shows Benitez at his offensive best.

all in all I'd say Palomino was probably his best all-round performance :TU:

It's amazing what he did as a teenager against a true ATG.

is it true that benitez trainer and his manager tried to lock him in a disused prison to try and stop him partying when he was in training,i know he only trained for 2 weeks before facing sugar ray leonard,as for the Judah fight,he`d win using only one hand
