Best way to beat a fighter with a shoulder roll/Mayweather?
Boxers like Broner and Mayweather who have mastered the shoulder roll look so hard to hit.
As a fan I find it boring to watch but you cannot deny the defensive skills this fighters possess.
My question, if you were training your fighter to go up against Broner or Mayweather what would your game plan be? We often hear ex fighters saying you need to get in their face, rough them up, hit any part of them, just hit them, but everyone always seems to come up short. I know Ricky Burns could have fought Broner this year and would be interested to see how Billy may have put a game plan together for that fight?

i think one way to get past the left shoulder is to throw the right hand in an arc not straight so you don't hit the top of the shoulder .
i see an amateur show england/britain vs the USA about 3 years ago and a couple of the american used the half cross defence (shoulder roll) and those boxers got a whooping they just wasn't good enough to use it and they were international boxers.

Against a fighter who rolls the shoulder, plenty of punches are out of the equation to lead with. The left hook is blocked by the right glove, they're too fast to lead to the body against and they roll the shoulder on the right hand. I would say step left and spin as you throw the jab, there's a gap between the right glove and the shoulder that the jab can be brought through, it then has to be followed by two or three more punches, right hook over the shoulder, left uppercut, right down the middle to the body. Those can be changed, but the key is to throw combinations so they can't counter and are forced onto the back foot, bully them to the ropes and unload. A heavy handed fighter could just hit anything, even the shoulder will do, because if the opponent tires, the openings start to come. A fighter who can keep that up for 12 rounds, or even 8 or 9 of 12, with a few easier rounds in between that are given away without taking much, can beat a fighter like Mayweather or Broner.

It's not a shoulder roll he does well
It's everything that goes with it,That's one element.

I agree, Broner's easy enough to hit. Whether it was through a lack of respect for their power, Paulie and Rees hit him plenty. That's why i'm so looking forward to this weekend's Maidana fight.

A punch in the nuts Golota style. That'll work.

It's a great system but it does have weaknesses. I think being an aggressive southpaw would help due to the defenders hand positioning and also using their (mayweather clone) foot position against them. A lively PAC would have caused Mayweather real problems.
This mayweather style isn't really a mayweather style it's just a traditional jack blackburn boxing stance but with their slant on it. They are very well versed because that's all they do. I just think boxers these days lack the know how. I know exactly what I'd have my lads do against that style and it does work but its just hard because you have to adjust to them.

Mayweather has mastered it as he actually see's the punches coming, other boxers who think they can do it just roll side to side. Doubling up on punches seems to work against them. For example doubling up the left hook or doubling the right hand and people who arent good at it seem to turn into the second punch. Thats probably why the amateur boxers you have mentioned took a pasting.

Broners style is nothing like Floyd's. His footwork is terrible and so is his head movement. I think Broner will get beat when he steps up in class.
The best way to beat Floyd without a gun or baseball bat is with the jab and some controlled pressure. I felt Castillo won the first fight and De La Hoya was doing well with the jab in the early rounds. However if he fights like he did against Corrales, Marquez or Canelo then he is going to be very difficult for anyone to defeat unless they have amazing talent and some natural advantages.
Thomas Hearns is a welter I feel certain would dominate Floyd. The style that had SRL beat for 11 rounds would do it for Floyd.
Re: Best way to beat a fighter with a shoulder roll/Mayweather?
Remember when McGirt was saying before Gatti faced Mayweather that they were aiming for some obscure part of the head near the ear. It's all rubbish. Each fighter is different and most that use the should roll these days aren't using it properly. It's a style over substance thing.
What most of these fighters don't realise is that Mayweather is using effectively whilst also employing a number of other skills.

Re: Best way to beat a fighter with a shoulder roll/Mayweather?
The way to beat a guy like Mayweather would be to work his body from the start. Not easy I know, but if you can get him to the ropes and then unload to the body for sveral rounds, it will eventually bring his guard down and open up the head.
It is obviously easier said than done, as I recall Hatton hardly landed anything to the body despite being an excellent body snatcher.

Hatton struggled with him, although Cortez didn't exactly help. Hatton did land a jab in the first round, it didn't hurt Mayweather, but it did catch him completely off balance and send him staggering across the ring into the ropes, in a bigger ring, he may well have hit the deck before he reached the ropes.forcefraser wrote:The way to beat a guy like Mayweather would be to work his body from the start. there was a hilarious guy on another forum i used to go on, he'd say over and over again how 'all Mayweather's got is a gameplan' which was a constant source of chuckels
Re: Best way to beat a fighter with a shoulder roll/Mayweather?
Not sure anyone alive now knows how to beat Mayweather. Would be fantastic if we could transfer a certain Walker Smith Jnr to the current era. Am sure he'd have found a way.

I'm sure someone does and there's a way to beat any fighter, the problem is finding someone capable of carrying out the plan and winning the fight.BigGar wrote:Not sure anyone alive now knows how to beat Mayweather. Trust me shawn porter will show all of u how to beat the "mayweather roll".
Re: Best way to beat a fighter with a shoulder roll/Mayweather?
Controlled agression behind a pumping jab. Honeyghun vs Curry style... possibly varying it with left hooks also.

i was in the same event in cardiff and that is exactly how they boxed them there (think it was part of the WBC convention)stevedoc wrote:i think one way to get past the left shoulder is to throw the right hand in an arc not straight so you don't hit the top of the shoulder .

If by that you mean he'd beat Mayweather, then I strongly disagree sir. There's no f**king way he'd beat Mayweather.mugabi wrote:Trust me shawn porter will show all of u how to beat the "mayweather roll".
