Boxing promoters and ticket sellers

Post by lefty »

There seems to be this consensus that you need to be a ticket seller to get anywhere in the sport if you're not a top class amateur beforehand. I dont disagree with that argument but the thing that does slightly baffle me is promoters dont seem to be interested in fighters unless they are ticket sellers. Well isnt your job as a "promoter" exactly that?! To promote and market these fighters so they become ticket sellers and bigger names. It doesnt make a ton of sense to me in that regard.

Most promotors especially small hall only want ticket sellers coz they carnt afford to lose money investing in fighters until they sell tickets is just not financially viable unless you have tv backing and of course fighters jump ship when they get a better offer and you are left with nothing but the debt from building the fighter up ask dennis Hobson he threw loads at McDonnell and look what happened mate

I've got to agree when it's someone like Warren or Hearn doing it. At the small hall level it makes sense but when you're a supposedly international level promoter you should be...well promoting

A lot of fighters who are with certain promoters have to sell enough tickets to cover their fight fee, if they dont they are off the bill.

100%!

Boxers show little loyalty, often understably, so why should small promoter sink dollars into them without surety of a return? Two way street.

I don't get this arguement. You employ a promoter to promote you. If they choose to sit around and do nothing whilst you run around selling tickets what are they actually being paid for?

Small hall promoters might not take a fee from the boxer, not only are boxers expect to sell tickets to cover there purse also cover there opponents purse, I've known boxers to fight and not get paid off the promoter. Who be a fighter nowadays unless you got a good amature background

My lads are all ticket deals, to cover there opponents purses if didn't have them on ticket deals I would not be promoting us small hall promoters have not got the luxury of TV money or big sponsors ,never had a penny of any of my lads even when they been on good pay days frighten on TV shows ,you looking at a cost of approx. 3k before you sell a ticket to put a show on, Hate having to put lads on ticket deal but what else can you do, I no if I had one TV date I could put a cracking show on real 50/50 fights I would put all TV money in to the boxers and not in my pocket :TU:

boxers used to and may still get paid say 50% of their purse in tickets and they end up more concerned about shifting the tickets than the fight . there have been loads of very good fighters that couldn't sell 10 tickets so getting a popular fighter that sells ticket just makes it a lot easier for the promotor .

your honesty wont sit well with the folk who dont live in the real world when it comes to small hall boxing and seem to think that promotors ,without tv have money trees in their back gardens or deep pockets .Wonder if they would be prepared ot lose a few grand at every show? i know the answer to that

To be fair gents I was talking more about the big time promoters like FW and Eddie. It just seems baffling to me.

When has Hearn put an emphasis on the fighter being a ticket seller?

He said it in an Ifilm london interview yesterday actually.

As for the other promoters. Seeing as you are making it so the fighters have most of the risk, why wouldn't they just team up and put their own show on?

It has got to be your job as a promoter to go out and sell tickets for your show, if you can't then I'm sorry you aren't doing your job at all. What is the point of you?

Its a genuine question by the way, educate me - I must need it.

He was talking about Boylan whose shifted somewhere in the region of 450 tickets for Southern area title against Owen whose done about 250 himself. Hearn's doing his promoting with his own stable (I think I'm right in saying neither of these are Matchroom fighters) so his 'promotional skills' are going to be concentrating on further hyping his Olympic fighters and any other lads he's picked up along the way. But to create a spectacle/atmosphere at the shows he wants to fill the bill with ticket sellers - looks good for TV as well to have a busy arena rather than an empty one. Makes sense to me, he aint going to pad out the show with someone who does 10 tickets.

Yeah but he also said a big part of why he's got them on the bill aswell is because they're ticket sellers. He said we're all in it for the money. There's nothing wrong with that by the way.

DMA,
Let me get this right. You're advocating boxers amalgamating and putting on their own shows ?
So where do you think theyre going to get the cash to set the show up in the first place ?
Which one is going to sit down and organise everything ?
Arena / Security / Advertising / Ticketing / Promotors licence etc etc etc. The list is endless.
Answer - none of em because that's why they employ Promotors and Managers !!!
How many more times are we going to have this debate ?
Boxing is a business.
Why would any Promotor put a fighter on who won't / can't sell tickets and wants a decent purse on top ?
A boxers career is not a white arrow on a pale blue background. No one way streets.

I think the point DMA is making mate is that how can you really call yourself a "promoter" if you're not actually doing anything promoting?! It is a valid point to be fair.

Answer me this then pal.
Let's assume at 9.00am tomorrow all Promotors walk away.
What do you think would happen ?
Now if your assumption that they do fornicate all but collect profit, the answer should be - boxing goes on.
What do you think the real answer is ?
Let me tie my colours to the mast having been in and around the sport for too many years.
In the main boxers are the laziest ignorant sports people when it comes to anything outside the ring and training.
Very few hold business acumen.
... and there's nothing wrong with that PROVIDED they leave the other members of their team to do what they have to do.
... and that includes Promotors.

Why do footballers / basketball players cricketers et al have Agents ?

I know mate its terrible int it ?
Promotors never put stuff on local radio shows, stick posters up here there and everywhere, cut deals with sponsors, manage fighters twitter accounts, issue press releases, arrange media days, or even invest in their own mini TV Co do they ?
All a fighter has to do is turn up when told, train hard and well, get paid and sell some tickets.
Any decent fighter should be able to do 50 tickets surely ?

ok change the definition of Promotor then and call him or her the Person who risks it all by putting his or hers money on the line perhaps that simplifies things but as for small hall promotors if the fighter doesnt sell tickets he is not fighting simple as that thats the economic reality of the situation

To be fair I said in an earlier post that I was talking more about the bigger promoters, the one's with tv backing and so on.
