Kevin Mitchell fighting on Sat....any thoughts?

Post by TopGun »

Personally I think we may have seen the best of him, hope I'm wrong but his defence looked a little weak in his last few outings even against the lesser opposition.

He is fighting EL Ouazghari now apparently, the guy took John Murray the full distance and had a bit of a war with him for the EBU title a couple of years ago, he aint bad to be fair, was due
to fight at the weekend anyway so should be reasonably fit, Murray started getting to him late on in there fight if memory serves and he just about survived the last couple of rounds as far as I can recall, he had a fair go early on as well.

Although Kevin hits a lot harder than John (certainly to the head anyway) so not sure how the Spaniard will cope with that side of his game.

Looking forward to the Moore v Taylor bout myself, should be a proper tear up for the Southern Area Lightweight title.

Shame AJ is out as well, would have been a slightly better test with Darch

I hear you, if focussed he is a good boxer but he does look like he has a few miles on the clock now, just doesn't look as sharp as he used to be IMO. We will see on Sat but I don't see him going any further now. I think it has been downhill since the Burns fight. He had 2 chances and just didn't perform. I cannot see him getting a world title anymore Billy.

After he beat Prescott, I thought he was on the path to win a world title but obviously the Katsidis KO put paid to that. Then when he came back to win that war v John Murray, I thought he had a real chance v Burns but was outclassed. Without wanting to provoke an argument with yourself, I don't think Burns is capable of outclassing any of the top fighters in the division the way he did Mitchell. The time for major improvements for Mitchell has probably passed so I don't think Kev will ever be a genuine contender for a title at lightweight.

The time to judge Ricky is after this fight,as Tony Sims said last sat what a nightmare for something so serious to go so wrong so early in the fight ( Darren's hip Ricky's jaw) neither can truly be judged on those performances.

I'm not criticizing Ricky, just saying I thought he was miles ahead of Mitchell and I doubt he could do that to the other top fighters in the division - I'm not saying he couldn't beat them. I just don't think Mitchell can mix it at the very top level based on performances like that.

No chance whatsoever. He is domestic level, always has been.

Agreed. Talks a good game pre fight, fails to deliver and then the excuses start.

The Mitchell fight was probably the least competitive of the top 3 or 4 fights on the bill. Purdy is an underdog in his fight, and there are I think 2 Southern area title fights that are very competitive. Beneath that in pretty easy fights we have Martin Murray, Wadi Camacho, Jamie McDonnell, Ogogo etc. So certainly a better card in terms of competitiveness than the Groves v Froch bill which had an outstanding main event and a load of mismatches.

Why doesn't Mitchell fight one of the many good domestic lightweights we have, instead of fighting these uninteresting foreign opponents?

I'm a big supporter of Kevin's but I'm getting sick of him padding out his record with these fights. He should be mixing it with the best in the UK. He's not a prospect anymore.

To the above 2 posters Kevin has said a fight with Tommy Coyle is likely next for him after this bout. I think he did need these fights to get himself back in the mix, obviously the Italian would have been a better opponent but we seem to be suffering a lot of pull outs on bills here of late. Both with Matchroom and Allegedly.

Totally agree. If he's focused, and confident. Besides which, I just like to watch him box.

Yes I like to watch kevin fight, the fight with John Murray was a peach, if John still has something to offer and I hope he has the rematch should get made

Agreed, good domestic match, but John is not winning a World title either...
