Paul Smith (Spoiler)

Post by expe »

What was the point in his fight tonight? He's beaten a journeyman over 6 rounds. He wants the Lonsdale outright, but pulled out of the opportunity to do so for this fight tonight. Where's the logic in that?

McDonnell is fighting the 176th best flyweight in the world in his fight on this undercard.

This undercard is awful.

Lots of fights, but the only decent ones are all area level, until we get to the main events, where Mitchell is in with a late replacement. Don't really get the hype around this show to be honest.

The main event is nothing special either.

Why not take the British title fight though? Bigger payday, Lonsdale belt outright, ready to move up a level in the new year. He's pushed himself back 6 months for no reason at a stage in his career when he can't afford it.

Just flicked over now. Can't be bothered with likes of Murray and McDonnel in these tune up fights. They are well past that stage and should be in competitive action.

As for Smith I just can't see him challenging at a higher level. I've said it here before but I think the Fielding fight is a must early next year. Next logical step for Rocky, Paul says he wants the belt outright and Rocky is the most worthy opponent. Eddie has said he is putting a Liverpool show on early next year that is a perfect headlining fight and one which would generate a lot of interest.

He was paid monthly by Warren so it can't be that and a British title fight would bring more money than a 6 rounder against a journeyman anyway.

I didn't know fighters got a monthly wage?

Most don't, some get paid a retainer that's paid back from their fight purses so they have enough money to keep going between fights. It was mentioned after Smith left Warren that he wasn't paid purses, but a monthly salary, which explains why he was happy to sit on the sidelines after he lost to Groves.

Watched an I film interview & joe Gallagher was fuming about smith waiting for ambler so he could weigh in then rehydrate, banging on how unsafe it is bla, bla, bla which shows he don't do 12st right. I see him as a middle & a decent one at super he is very average IMO.

All matchroom undercards are basically just 80% names vs no hopers/journeymen these days.

Eddie's gotta keep his ever growing (usually poached) stable of fighters happy (and paid) but the public are getting conned

Paul was lined up to fight a decent live opponent, it unfortunately fell apart at the last minute. Ambler got the call late thursday evening to step in, it was then reduced to 6 rounds. Paul had to wait for ambler to arrive at the hotel to weigh in, ambler first had to go into work for half a day then jump in a car for about 8hrs. there was an awful lot of weight between both lads but ambler felt it was the right thing to give paul a runout. why cz ambler is a proper fighter and does wot he has to do, to be fair to matchroom this was supposed to see paul in a real test.

The first opponent pulled out Alastair warren after being offered a derisory purse to fight a British champion. 3 grand I hear.

Shocking purse, but to be honest Warren hasn't won a fight in 2 years, has been stopped a couple of times and was easily outpointed by David Brophy last week. Would have done nothing for Smith as well.

Not only that, but he then thinks that he is due a world title shot because of it ! - he is clearly deluded.

It is not cobblers.

A few years ago Smith posted details on another forum - he even said how much his annual salary was (I won't repeat this here).

I think that there is no standard form of payment - it depends who the boxer is (eg. well known, Olympic champion who does dancing on ice etc.) might get a signing on bonus, salary plus extra for fights, a decent amateur who for whatever reason can sell a load of tickets (such as Smith and also Kevin Mitchel) who might get a salary or an average amateur who will be given a ticket only deal.

There are also a whole bunch of other options in the middle.

Eg. John Murray had a deal with Hennesey (I think) that gave him a minimum purse - this sounds a good deal, but you have to fight to get the purse !

Hennesey couldn't afford to pay the purse he was contractually entitled for him to fight journeymen and Murray wouldn't box for less, so in the end he had long periods of inactivity.

I think that apart from a small minority, the life of a pro boxer is not as lucrative as the public would think - I am sure that an average non-league footballer (who doesn't have to worry about selling tickets and doesn't pay his trainer or promoter etc.) earns more in a year than the majority of pro boxers in this country.

Spot on :TU: :TU:

One of my mates trained for 10 weeks fought on a Goodwin Show, a 10 rounder for the S.Area Title and didn't get a bean.. He only sold enough Tickets to cover the opponents purse and the House.. It's all about Tickets and the House (promotor) not losing out.

I don't think it's right that he fought a journyman at this stage; fair enough if you're a up'n comer. I think after a certain amount of fights (say 5) it should be with someone who's there to win. Esp against a British champion, It's not on!

He's record is 34- 3

the other guy's record was 10 - 53
