What happened to Leroy Jones?

Post by evrenb »

I was looking into what happened to Leroy Jones after he retired from boxing...he seemed to disappear completely off the radar!
I read that a few journalists were looking for him and traced him down to Los Angeles. Apparently Ron Lyle said he was running a junkyard in Los Angeles with his brother. . . but the journalist could make no contact. Strange one...anyone have any info of the post Holmes years of Leroy. I understand he died in 2010 but nothing I can find on that either..how did he die....Il Duce you have an endless energy and horizonless eons of time...anything you can find??

From what I remember, I think he suffered a detached retina in his bout with Larry Holmes, and
claimed that Larry intentionally thumbed him.
He did...had one more fight and was then never seen again....mystery!

Later, Leroy Jones hooked up with Bruce as a Bodyguard for 'Bruce Hornsby and the Range'. {1986 thru 1989}

Leroy Jones was also a 'personal body guard' for Actor - William Preston "To Live and Die in L.A." from 1985 thru 1987.
Wow didn't know this...is this the same Leroy Jones??

evrenb,

Did you notice that not one of Il Duce's critics had a single word to add to this thread?

That's why we keep him around, no matter what he feels is true about Ali...

Well, Giancarlo, if you ever posted anything that showed any boxing knowledge or research, I'd put you over on a thread or too.

Hell, at this point, I'd give you a standing ovation for posting anything other but adolescent insults and name-calling.

Problem is, Dart, how would you have any idea if a post shows 'boxing knowledge'?

Let's face it, all you've shown so far is the ability and urge to swallow The Duchess' lies hook, line and sinker.

By the way, as a guy hanging on every word The Duchess posts, I'd have thought you liked adolescent insults and name-calling?

I don't hang onto his posts. Point in fact, I disagree pretty strongly with a lot of his anti-Ali stuff and I'm well aware he takes some poetic license in making his cases. Point in fact #2 is that you bring absolutely nothing to this board except to troll him. Feel free to point out one single thread you've contributed any single comment of substance in.

Leroy Brown dropped off the map after retiring from boxing and no one could ever track him down or talk to him. The material towards the top of the thread, about his showbiz work, is sadly fiction.

I hope that Il Duce's stories are not B/S. That would be really sad. I used 'Leroy Brown' as reference to 'Big Bad Leroy Brown...Leroy Jones disappeared!!! But he did die in 2010. .

'Big Bad' Leroy Jones, was Managed and Trained by Bobby Lewis in Denver.

Leroy worked as a sparring partner for Ron Lyle through the 1970's.

After the 'TKO loss' to Larry Holmes on March 31, 1980 - Leroy suffered an eye injury and did
not have the desire to continue in boxing.

In 1981, he worked in Denver driving a 'Big Rig' tractor-trailer {Denver to Los Angeles route}
and blew up to 300 lbs. He also worked as a Celebrity Doorman in a few Denver Nightclubs,
and did a little singing as well.

In the summer of 1982 he decided to return, and lost about 25 lbs. to get down to 275 lbs. He had
one-bout on August 26, 1982 against one-time prospect Jeff Shelburg in Gary, Indiana. Leroy
won by a TKO 2, but decided to leave boxing for good, citing concerns about his eye.

He continued to drive a 'Big Rig', but also continued as a Celebrity Doorman in Denver in 1982 and 1983.

Well......I didn't know what had happened to him...so this fills the thread with something that may well could have happened.

Il Duce....what are your sources here? Were you wearing your spaghetti strainer with the rabbit ears when you received the signal?

OR.....can I run to a book, person, newspaper to confirm this? Not that I need confirmation when you offer up the goods...but I like to have more than one source.

I can't say it's balderdash....cuz I'm not sure what balderdash really is. But I often don't know which track you are on from moment to moment. Fiction....non-fiction....or re-enactment witnessing.

Duchess, did you make up the stuff about Leroy Jones' post-boxing life to try to appear knowledgable to the likes of "Dart" or did you make it up because you can't stop lying?

Box Buzz, you disappoint me, I thought you were an expert Boxing Pundit.......... :??

Leroy Jones, came from Mississippi to Brooklyn, New York when was a teenager, in 1964.

Attended Boys and Girls High School, and lettered in Football and Basketball.

Got an Athletic Scholarship to attend Grambling University, and was the starting Tight End
for the Football Team.

Came back to Brookyn, New York in late-1970 and took up boxing at the Telstar Boxing Club in
Manhattan. Was trained by Harold Weston Sr.

Leroy was a New York Golden Gloves Champion in 1971 and 1972.

Here is an article about Leroy Jones from April 18, 1972

http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q= ... WRZsA5jk0g

Well your article does speak to what you say it speaks to.......

However it is not related to the after career info that you seem to be in the know about.

Not that it overly matters, but it was the theme of this thread.

One person here seems to differ with you and claims you are not being accurate. When you are challenged for accuracy, I'm probably going with the person who claims you made it up....because with your several accurate contribution....you have seeded your many contributions with many "genuine" fictitious assertions.

So I never know what to believe with you. I need another source before I can imagine it to have credence.

With two additional sources I would imagine it to have led zeppelin.

Evrenb, sorry, I meant Leroy 'Jones'! I think as this thread has progressed it has become quite clear you are having your leg pulled. All this material about Leroy Jones and his retirement is sadly just babble.

Hello Jim

Just curious....how are familiar with Leroy's history? I only ask because you appear to be a new contributor.

Now if it's simply on the assumption that everything Il Duce says is wrong....well, I'm not going to find great fault with that....however I'm curious if you have anything more substantial.

I would very very upset if Il Duce's 'facts' are lies as this has a personal interest to me. I'm not saying it is, just with his given track record it is a possibility. There seems to be very little still on post Holmes...

Yeah....and if one contributor is going to say that we are having our leg pulled....(which is entirely possible) I'm just wondering if we have anyone with some alternative info.

Leroy Jones, like Jeff Merritt, is one of those characters who post boxing simply dropped off the map. With Merritt there is that one infamous anecdote from Jack Newfield relating to the Tyson/Ruddock weigh in. With Leroy Jones there is nothing, never has been anything, and anyone who has been looking out for word on Leroy Jones for 20 years knows there has never been anything, not the slightest bit of information on him ever.

... And now in 2013 a man on the internet quite remarkably surfaces with news on Leroy Jones that neither journalists or fighters could ever find. He doesn't provide any sources whatsoever, and the rest of his body of work on the forum reveals that the man is a pathological liar who makes up stories, invents quotes and smear fighters. And judging by his activity it is something that consumes every hour of his day.

There is no discussion or debate here. If you want to believe this Il Duce drivel then you must be incomprehensibly suggestible. I'm astonished by how gullible some people are.

Ah, the thick waft of bullshit is strong in this thread. I'm not going to engage in girlish arguments with strangers on the internet. I know you can't prove anything you wrote about Leroy Jones because it is fiction, and I can see you have been asked hundreds of times in other threads for sources and all you ever do is respond with infantile name-calling. That says it all.

I'll take hard evidence over the word of a man who spends all day writing fiction on a boxing forum, names himself after history's most inept dictator and seems to be battling a latent sexual attraction to Muhammad Ali in public. Your life is painfully dull and it shows in your writing.
