Anthony Joshua: assessment

Post by lefty »

What are your thoughts on him? I think he's talented for sure but i'm still not convinced on this second coming of Lennox hyperbole. I think he has a very good jab, he can punch and he's got a good boxing brain *You kind of have to, to be a olympic gold medalist* but I still think his movement looks quite rigid/ stiff. I dont know if it's because he's carrying too much muscle or what. Anyway, I know there's a lot that really rate him so I wanted to hear the fellow forum members thoughts on him.

i agree with your assessment regarding his qualities and shortcomings but he looks like the best heavyweight prospect the UK has had in a long time and as such should go on to do well at world level assunimg a normal degree of development and chin.

Whilst I think he's a great pro prospect, I think he was very lucky to win the gold, in my opinion losing to Camarelle and Lara.

However he's a great pro prospect, my only worry is can he take a punch; his legs look very slim

His upper body is huge but yeah like you say his legs are pretty damn spindly.

Its too early to say.

You will only know when he gets hit on the chin and how he reacts will tell you everything.

I know he has sparred with hayemaker

the people that saw that spar would know a lot of how far he can go as a pro

my own feeling is that he will not make it to world level as will be knocked out when people are hitting him

he does seem a really nice guy when talking to Kugan is the interviews

He is going all the way. Pretty damn confident in that. He has everything for me, poise, power, combinations, speed – and he can improve still. He stood up to some whacks in the amateurs from the likes of Medzhidov, Cammarelle and the crew, feel like his chin is solid.

Just wish he wasn't so damn muscled. He is fluid, but he could be more so.

Kind of weird to me that some people on this forum could doubt the prospects of a guy like Joshua but talk up someone like Frankie Gavin...ho hum. Each to their own.

Do you think he got a hometown decison in to get the gold last summer?

I was at his first fight agaisnt Savon and could not believe he got the result 17;16

I'm pretty sure he was stopped as an amateur though Riddick.

How can anyone make an assessment with the level of opposition he's facing???in general it doesn't mean anything what people think it's about him remaining unbeaten & getting the right fights & moved forward at the right time.
If he gets a good learning fight & shows some strain or struggle he won't make it & if he blows away poor opposition it means Shen he faces half a test he will get pancaked, no matter what or where he goes he is getting criticised.
My criticism is that he's going over the top with padding himself up with ko's when he should be getting tough international club fighters with a clear blue print he can gain rounds & expieriance against & box to a plan against

He needs rounds, and he needs opponents that are going to bring different styles to the table doing it. he needs to learn how to fight, because Olympic champion or not, he has very little background in the sport.

I think he fights a little stiff and needs to loosen up a bit. A great physical specimen and athlete but that's no guarantee of success at the highest level. Hopefully he can get the rounds in and learn his craft from durable opponents with varying skills as opposed to fighting complete mismatches like Price did.

Joshua isn't even 6 months into his pro career, add to that only starting boxing at the relatively late age of 18 his got a lot of building, growing and rounds to do.
His got the tools but against his pro opposition so far and a lucky Olympic gold it's difficult to say. But I'd still bet he'd deal with Firtha much more convincingly than Wilder.

In the Olympics, He was under unbelievable pressure. He was unlucky not to win the Worlds, the year before. Joshua is for real, the injury's are a concern.

Yeah, I think Dillian Whyte stopped him.

Yeah, I think Dillian Whyte stopped him.
In fairness, I think there's very few "iron chinned" heavyweights. The guys hit so hard at heavyweight that you have a great chin and still be put on your backside.

Yeah, I think Dillian Whyte stopped him.
This always gets bought up, but didn't Whyte stop him in the early days of his amateur career?

I tell you what though, Whyte vs Joshua would be a corker when Dillian's ban is up.

It was Whytes first Amateur fight and he knocked down Joshua and completely dominated him for the rest of the fight.

I would love to see them fight in the Pros and will put my money on Whyte by KO.

I'm very optimistic about Joshua's pro career. Just looks so much quicker for his size compared to many current HW's. Some of his less polished attributes can be tuned over time, he seems to have the right mentality and always wants to learn. And Fast Car needs to watch out for AJ promotions!

That is true but it doesn't tell the whole story. Dillian had a considerable amount of ring experience from kickboxing, it's not like he was straight off the boat. He's a banger though and I'm looking forward to his return. Anybody who's seen him in the gym will vouch for his potential to get in the upper domestic and euro level.

:TU:

People talk about his inexperience, needs to learn etc but going into 2012 he was under incredible pressure which would have been amplified by the fact he was/is inexperienced. He boxed better at the worlds the year before.

I thought he lost to Savon, like everyone else. Unlike everyone else though I think that was the pressure getting to him. The final was tight as a nuns and could have gone either way. Home fighter always wins those in the ams ( and pros mostly )
Don't forget he was on the other end of such a final the year before in the worlds, losing by a point against the local fighter.

He had already beaten Cammarelle the year before in another tight fight.

His chin will determine how far he can go ultimately, as I see little wrong with the rest of him. That vid Columbo shared above suggests he can take a decent shot though as Cammarelle can bang ( remember what those shots did to Pricey four years earlier? )

I like Whyte but how many times have we heard 'this guy beat him in the ams' only for the am conqueror to be destroyed in a pro rematch?

Tyson, Cotto, Bowe etc all had their am foes who they took apart when the head guards were off and most importantly, they had more experience and had grown up.

I would hazard a guess that Joshua may, just may, have ever so slightly improved and grown up a touch since the Whyte fight :TU:
