Domestic rivalries never/yet to be resolved in the ring

Post by johnswan1 »

Including rematches of close/controversial fights, what fights do you think we have missed out on most over the years, and what other fights involving active British & Irish fighters do we most want to see resolved.

Fights involving retired fighter(s):

Collins-Calzaghe
Calzaghe-Froch
Calzaghe-Reid II
Hatton-Witter
Fury-Haye (Fury retired, Haye says he is most likely to, although in reality both will probably return)
Sutherland-Degale
Sutherland-Groves

Current rivalries yet to be settled:

Khan-Brook
Khan-Gavin
Brook-Gavin
Froch-Groves II
Froch-Degale
Groves-Degale II
Barker (probably retired) /Lee/Murray/Macklin, 4 top middleweights, none have faced each other
Quigg-Frampton
Price-Fury
Price-Chisora
Cleverly-Bellew II

Any others I've missed?

Napa vs McDonnell - there needed to be a rematch.

The Light Middle scene of the early 00's.

Oliver vs Brodie

Oliver vs Naz

Naz vs Brodie

Naz vs Ingle 2 (Ingle was improving and still learning after first Naz fight)

Harrison vs Arthur

Bruno vs Mason

One I would have always liked to have seen when they were coming up was Barker vs Smith.

True - although the sport never learns as we are currently in the midst of a similar situation with the current Middleweights.

"Khan-Gavin"

Seen this mentioned couple of times this week. How's this a domestic rivalry? One has competed at world level for several years and is probably (undeservedly) fighting Mayweather next. The other is figting the workd number 373 this week and seems content moving one step forward and them going back 2. Completey different levels and as far as I know never been a rivalry between them

Two British fighters, both decorated amateurs, similar age, both ranked top 20 in the world, fighting in the same division. Khan started as a pro four years earlier, but Gavin is undefeated and on an upward curve. It may well be the case that their peak times don't cross over (just as Hatton & Khan didn't), but I think their names together merit a place on this list given it's possible they could end up with a high profile showdown within the next couple of years.

Everyone who's a similar age in the same weight division isn't in a domestic rivalry though. There has to be some history there somewhere it started. Khan and Brook have niggled at aching other for years, that's a proper rivalry

it might crop up in the future, but for the time being the opportunity has never been there and a rivalry has never formed. At no time has it been expected that the 2 would face so we can't see it as an unresolved rivalry. I would argue the same is true of brook Gavin, i've always had gavin a step or two behind brook, so i would argue there is no real rivalry there either

In that case you could say the same for Froch-DeGale. I think Groves/DeGale were both at the same point where Gavin is now at the time that Groves fought Froch. Groves best win other than DeGale was over Johnson, a former world champion way past his best, just as Witter was when Gavin fought him. I suppose the difference is that Groves got himself in as a mandatory challenger, but Frankie is not far off that himself being ranked 5th with WBA, 3rd with WBO and 9th with IBF. Add in the fact that Khan is not even a champion any more and the levels appear a lot closer.

Ex England team mates remember. Frankie is 28, Amir is 27. Khan has been around the block a few times, and Gavin is yet to be tested at world level, and they both started out as bright prospects at a similar time. I think Gavin needs to be moved along fast in the next 12 months as I don't want to see him have a short prime like Hatton did.

Gavin wants Khan.. Khan will only do it if it sells, and Gavin is not that mainstream yet.

Fury-Haye (Fury retired, Haye says he is most likely to, although in reality both will probably return)
I remember when David just started in the pro ranks the regulars on ESB had a great time goading Team Haye and Team Mark Hobson ... f*ck me they were brilliant rucks!!!

Out of the present day, I am looking forward to:

Brook v Khan
Frampton v Quigg

And I am looking forward to some questions being answer on the world and domestic heavyweight front!!

Do you remember the thread 'David Deron Haye with Something to Say'? Must have been ten years ago and it seems like minutes.

David loves the forums - even when he was taking abuse he said he loved it.
