To say that in public was tasteless. And it wasn't just the one line; he went on and on.

So any time a sports person or any celeb says something in
the negative about another person of similiar stature..living
or dead....that should be considered tasteless?

Personally I would never have said it myself, however I
felt. But I am not that man and he is not you.

I just watch fighters fight. I care little about much else,
their politics, opinions outside of prize fighting or even
what music they listen to. Its not why I watch the sport.

Heck if what people said derided my opinions of them as
a specific talent then I would have few people to appreciate in
their given fields.

Larry said alot of things about alot of people, including Muhammad Ali. Holmes has said time and again, that he felt it should have been his time, not Ali's or anyone else's. The fact that Holmes almost tied Marciano's record, lost, and the Marciano family being present and the fact the press made so much out of the coincidence of Holmes failing to make 49-0 was just too much for Larry to bare. He felt he had been ripped off by the Las Vegas judges, and out of anger (and nothing more) he said those famous words.

Whether they are true, or not, is speculative. IMHO Larry was probably the greatest heavyweight of all time. Could he of beaten Marciano? Of course. Not just once, but possibly multiple times. HOWEVER, I am of the opinion, when you reach the top twenty (let alone top five or ten) of all time in any weight class, you're really splitting hairs on the greateness of these fighters because on any given night anyone in the top twenty could beat anyone else on that top twenty list. Holmes would beat Marciano, yes, but Marciano at one point or another would beat Holmes too.

No, not every time that someone says something negative about someone else it tasteless. In this case it was. He showed a lot of disrespect for Marciano that was unwarranted. Again, it wasn't just one comment that slipped out. Holmes went on and on. He could of just said that he thought he was better than Marciano and/or if he could beat him, and left it at that. No need at all for the "he can't carry my jockstrap comment" and the other comments. Totally unnecessary.
