Jamie McDonnell
Last night was probably weird for Jamie McDonnell - To be honest I really do think he has been well and truly screwed, and I honestly believe someone in his team are/is at fault.
Whilst Jamie's family/team may very well have honourable intentions - I keep coming back to the same conclusion - and that is ALL scenarios should have been considered concerning the consequences of ditching his contract - instead in the advice given was severly flawed.
Stuey Hall showed massive courage and stamina and sheer balls in winning the World IBF Bantamweight title - its not his fault that his chance came about due to boxing politics - I was really happy for the lad.
But, I cant help but think Jamie would have beaten either Hall or Malinga last night - instead when being briefed about the "Grass being greener on the other side", all he has done is receive "undercard" purses which were probably lower than £8k.
After last night Stuey Hall will probably have a thoroughly deserved pay day in March against Paul Butler a fight which I favour Butler. After that Jamie can whistle if he thinks he is next in line to fight for what he considers as his title - in my view there is no chance of *allegedly allowing their fighter (Hall or Butler) fighting on a rival show at Sky. Once its confirmed that title has passed what will Eddie Hearn do??
In my view and I would love to be proved wrong, Jamie McDonnell is just as likely to lose fighting an eliminator for peanuts, and worse still I honestly think Jamie McDonnell will never again be world champion.
My view is its questionable that McDonnell or Hall are genuine world class fighters, they have done incredibly and I seriously do not want to diminish their achievement in winning a world title but I think they both belong in the "over achieved" club ...
Yet again I ask why why and why did Team McDonnell think it would be better in leaving Dennis Hobson??
You dont have to like or get on with a promoter... as long as he is securing world title shots and defences crack on ... minimum purses etc etc can be discussed when a contract is formerly over ... if you leave before the contract is up ... f*ck me you have to make sure that the decision is water tight ...

Re: Jamie McDonnell
Bantamweight is puddle-deep nowadays.
Tomoki Kameda, Shinsuke Yamanaka etc mean zip to pretty much most members (except Iamasadlittleboy and datsue)
And there isn't the money there in comparison to a HBO-backed supermiddle or Showtime Welterweight world title fight.
With regards the fight last night, I thought it was great and I thought Hall was spent, but then managed to find a third wind to see himself through to the final bell.
The scores were extremely wide, which i put down to the fantastic support in the audience - but the right fella won.
McDonnell must have been looking on...

Re: Jamie McDonnell
McDonnell is the highest ranked contender. All he has to do is keep busying, whilst Matchroom lobbies the IBF to "do the right thing" and a mandatory challenger situation will soon come about. That removes the element of choice from whichever promotional outfit is behind Hall or Hall's conqueror in March (should the title change hands then).
Well done x 10000000 to Hall, last night's performance was nothing short of heroic![[icon_notworthy.gif]](./images/smilies/icon_notworthy.gif)

And the motto of the story is, if you get a chance, take it!
Mcdonnell v Hall 2, lets have it

Re: Jamie McDonnell
Be September before that comes around though because Malinga was mandatory, so Hall will be given 9 months to make a mandatory defence, possibly more.JimJim2009 wrote:McDonnell is the highest ranked contender. I have wondered with Jamie Mc not really being a ticket seller whether fast car has considered moving up him up & weight & using him as canon fodder for Quigg in a voluntary.

Instead of getting the champions purse, he will receive a challengers!
Furthermore McDonnells decision to leave means he has done more or less nothing for over a year!! In addition if he continues to fight mark time fights he is then jepordising his ranking!! To keep a ranking you need to fight fighters at the top end - and them fights are 50/50 whether he wins or not - and again I stress fighting for sh*t purses.

Re: Jamie McDonnell
i really can't get my head around letting a world title go outside the ring . most fighters dream of a title weather that's southern area or world titles depending on your level and for a fighter like mcdonell who 20 years ago would be fighting around the european /commonwealth level . he's probably fighting for 1/10th of what he would of got .
i remember when dennis andries fought tommy hearns it was just in the same tax year as his previous 2 fights and it moved him up a tax bracket and he ended up with f@ck all for fighting one of the greats in hearns , bad management

Fighting that bloke about 7 inches smaller & 13 years older on the Froch undercard was pathetic!

I think McDonnell's best hope is if Brook manages to win a world title, then he can be a regular support act for decent nights at the Sheffield Arena.
Re: Jamie McDonnell
Agree with this. I saw the fight last night and thought it was an absolute belter, cracking effort by both lads, but it was only because I saw the topic on here this week about Stuart Hall and clicked on it because I thought it was going to be a funny about the former It's a Knockout presenter. I'd never heard of Hall (the boxer) before that, and I hadn't heard of McDonnell until the fall-out with Hobson. Likewise the two guys you mention in your post.G0mez wrote:Bantamweight is puddle-deep nowadays.

I still think someone at Matchroom dropped the ball here by not checking the IBF defence rulings after they got Jamie. If the IBF had written to Hobson (thinking he was still the registered manager) to forewarn him of the impending deadline, who could blame him for not passing the info on.

I'd have added Iwasa (WBC #1, OPBF champion, former Japanese Champion and a man who gave Yamanaka a nightmare) and Anselmo Moreno (a guy Koki Kameda did all he could to avoid).G0mez wrote:Bantamweight is puddle-deep nowadays.

But yeah the money isn't in the UK or America, it's in Japan with WOWOW and TBS or in Panama with Moreno. The exciting Bantamweight super 4 that came about a few years back was effectively the end point, for now, of the division stateside.

Good post Spud. There was an 11 page thread about this on here :
http://boxrec.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=172638
About the same time it was reported that McDonnell's twin was offered a British title shot. This was turned down by his manager because he (the manager not the boxer) was going on holiday 6 and a half weeks before the fight. His manager also claimed on twitter that Gavin had got a TV deal. This has yet to be announced and Gavin hasn't boxed since.

Re: Jamie McDonnell
They've got themselves into an absolute mess, I doubt any of it is actually Jamie's fault, by his own admission he isn't a boxing fan and I doubt he has much knowledge of how the business works, so he follows their advice and loses his title. It can't have been hard to type three letters and click a mouse a few times to get onto the IBF rankings, that clearly state the champion, the date the title was won, the date of the last defence and the date that the next mandatory is due to take place by. Then, look down the rankings to #1 and see who the mandatory challenger is and get the fight sorted.Pugilist-specialist wrote:Good post Spud. There was an 11 page thread about this on here :

I,m sure after McDonnell beat Julio Ceja to win the title he was asked ringside what his plans were and he replied he had a mandatory in November first to take care of before he made other plans so it cant have been that they were unaware

So just thought they could get out of it and put the fight back, that's just as bad as not knowing he had a mandatory.handsofstone wrote:I,m sure after McDonnell beat Julio Ceja to win the title he was asked ringside what his plans were and he replied he had a mandatory in November first to take care of before he made other plans so it cant have been that they were unaware

Of course he will, as he would be the challenger ?!?
If your point is that McDonnell has well and truly fxxked things up for himself with his decisions, and has thus fxxked his current earning power, I completely agree.
I just don't see him being in the wilderness for very long really. He is the highest rated IBF challenger, and I would expect his promoters to lobby the IBF incessantly, and hammer home the fact that McDonnell lost his title through politics or managerial incompetence, rather than in the ring. I fully expect to see, over the coming 6-9 months, McDonnell stay unbeaten, stay relatively busy, and rise to the #1 position.
Yes, he will take the short end of the purse against Hall, in a rematch, but he has beaten Hall once, and would be favoured to do so again. Plus, he has Sky and Matchroom behind him. So, he has a clear path forward.
I totally agree its been a very bad year for him - from June onwards - but then again it's not like he won the IBF title in May and was suddenly signed to a million quid a defence contract. He was with a promoter who is more retired than part time (if you judge a promoter on how often he actually promotes shows), and the best TV deal on the table was with the subscription TV channel that the general public doesn't watch. His title winning effort was on an obscure PPV channel that the general public doesn't watch either. So all in all I don't buy into the idea that the situation for McDonnell was brilliant.
I think the idea was for him to jump ship to Matchroom as the IBF champ and line up a defence before xmas live on Sky, and build from there. We're all guessing as to who cocked up and how they cocked up.

Re: Jamie McDonnell
If his promoter is retired he did well to get him a shot at a vacant world title in his hometown. The fight was shown on an obscure channel but did this affect McDonnell's purse? - the figure quoted on here was a big one for a relatively unknown bantamweight.JimJim2009 wrote:Instead of getting the champions purse, he will receive a challengers!

Before McDonnell jumped ship, the Hall rematch was very much under consideration - I am willing to bet it does not happen unless Fast Car Eddie comes in with an absolutely ridiculous offer.

JimJim ... my response to the 2nd line of your post was the whole idea of moving to Matchroom was more exposure and more money. He is going to be the forgotten man quickly which is a shame!! and more importantly the purses will be not be much over £10k.JimJim2009 wrote:Instead of getting the champions purse, he will receive a challengers!

Hall will fight Butler in March or someone who suddenly sneaks into the IBF rankings, and my view is with regards to the Hall/Malinga fight thats the best we will see of Hall - he showed tremendous courage, heart and determination to win the title ... Hall is not world class and the likelihood is Hall will probably loose in his first defence unless some clever matchmaking and "maneouvering" in the rankings is sorted - and if I am proved right that will mean it will be a nightmare for Eddie to get McDonnell another shot at a world title.
