Hide-Bowe

Post by deadpan »

Watched it for the first time in years today. I'd forgotten how many heavy punches he landed on Riddick. He wasn't that far at all from an almighty upset.

Worth a gander -

I'll always recall this fight and think about the "what if's" for Herbie. Yes, he got well paid for the fight (his career best purse by a country mile) but it was also the high water mark for his career. Yet, it should not have been. The promoters and HBO really wanted Hide back out later that year in Vegas, and were willing to put him on a big show, obviously undercard to a main title fight, vs a fellow contender. They were really impressed at his effort against Bowe. I always wondered what might have happened, as back then Hide was well capable of beating a lot of the top ten heavyweights. For HBO to be willing to send high profile opportunities the way of a beaten heavyweight is almost unheard of, certainly for a British one. I always thought he should have jumped at the chance.

Hide had a go but he was on the canvas a lot I seem to remember. Too small for the behemoths.

With a better chin, he would have been too much for Bowe that night - had him absolutely out on his feet twice and looked the faster and sharper throughout. But then, if my auntie had bollocks...

I only remember it as Hide being slapped at the press conference and then put down about 5 times with another slip thrown in. Hadn't realised it was a fight. sounds worth a watch.

Bowe said Herbie hit him harder than anyone else.

Hide wasn't slapped. That was Larry Donald.

Bowe flattens Hide with a shot and Darke starts going on about phantom-punches and slips then Bowe slips and it's "and Hide's got him!"........commentary isn't half dodgy

Doctor: "Herbie, do you know where you are?" "I'm fighting Riddick Bowe for the heavyweight championship now f*ck off!"

that was a phenomenal effort by a 23yr old Hide.

Ian Darke got worse during the second half of that. Called it off when it was on on a few occasions including bizarrely that it was off because the towel had come in, before saying the fight couldn't be stopped by the towel. Darke was more all over the place than Hide.
Bowe looked lazy and the referee was sh*t too. Dreadful. Those circumstances were all wrong for Hide, if he had a better punch resistance he could have been seriously hurt with Steele in charge.

One of Bowe's sloppiest performances vs one of Hide's best resulted in Herbie getting some big shots in and troubling Riddick but Big Daddy was never really going to lose that with Herbie's chin as it was.

This was the first full fight I ever saw, aged 11. Think it was shown on Grandstand the following day.

I'm sure Bowe said at the time that he had never been hit harder

Hide went in with some cardio issues - couldn't run two laps of a running track. But mainly it was the chin that let him down. If it had been made of iron maybe he could have boxed Bowe and Vitali's ears off!

Herbie Hide wasn't too small for Riddick Bowe, he was too physically and mentally fragile for Riddick Bowe.

Smaller men than Hide have beaten bigger men than Bowe.

Bowe's a bit before my time but I always got the impression he was brilliant. People say negative things about the Klitschkoes but based on that they'd have had him.

Watch Riddick Bowe's next fight, versus the 6'7'' Jorge Luis Gonzalez. Bowe feared Gonzalez, and thus got in shape and came to fight. Watch the speed of Bowe against Gonzalez, the workrate, the aggression, the constant barrage of big punches.

He would have massacred the Klitschko brothers.

Its all 'what could of been' with Bowe, he had all the tools to of gone on to be a all time great, his fights with Holyfield were great, but his world title fight record is 5-1, but in that he beat Dokes and Ferguson, who should never of been allowed to fight for the title. Its not the record of an all time great.

Looking at his record, the only top, top contenders he beat were Holyfield, Golata and maybe Hide.
and we all know that Golata threw both fights away.

Well certainly that's the most negative slant anyone can put on Riddick Bowe I suppose. I for one like the way he would pummel an overmatched opponent inside one or two rounds, rather than jabbing at them for eleven or twelve stultefying rounds.

Bowe was the undisputed heavyweight champion, and came to wage war. He was thrilling. And his three fights with a prime Evander Holyfield are superior to the Klitschko's one single fight against a Great, a six round loss to a nearly 40 year old Lennox Lewis.

As for Golota, I remember a shot Riddick Bowe decking Golota, breaking his jaw, and making Golota ask Roger Bloodworth to stop the fight. There was no quit in Riddick Bowe when the tables were turned on him. There's a lot of quit in the Klitschko brothers.

That's not accurate. Bowe faced particularly weak opposition bar Holyfield, fighters such as Larry Donald. At his very best - Holyfield 1 - he could gave given the Klitschkos an argument and probably beaten a pre-McCall, Lewis. However as soon as he won the title his weight was always north of 17 stone and he was never quite as good again. A very brief peak to win the title really.

With the proper diet, dedication and application, Bowe could and should have been a great.

Excellent boxer when he was on song, but he often got dragged into brawls (Golota, Holyfield). His love of the pie and cream deserts was part of his downfall. The guy just loved to eat and didn`t like to train, which is a bad combination.

He had a real nasty streak in the ring. I remember him battering some guy over the top rope and swinging at him whilst he falling over.

Shame how he ended up. His speech is slurred badly these days.

Its an honest slant, he didn't fight many top contenders, and i said he should of been an all time great.
When he beat Holyfield the first time, i thought i was watching a guy who would reign for a long time, but he didn't.
Also at no point would i call him a quitter, but for whatever reason his management steered his career away from alot of competitive matches.

Agreed. Wlad would have been clueless and pummelled efficiently to the canvas early doors. Vitali might have seen the final bell though to drop a decision.

Well remember the heavyweight division was at that time the domain of Don King and the Duvas, both of whom seemed to work overly closely with the sanctioning bandits. Riddick Bowe was Rock Newman's only ticket and once he ate himself out of the titles they froze him out and kept him away from the belts (hence fighting Hearns' Herbie Hide for the meaningless WBO trinket)

Case in point: in Oct 1995 Riddick Bowe was regarded as the best heavyweight in the world. The WBC did not rank him in their top 10. They did rank Frank Bruno, Jeremy Williams and Alex Zolkin in their top 10 however. They had Larry Donald at 8, who had lost every single round to Riddick Bowe. They ranked Mike Tyson at number 1 who had boxed one clubfighter in the last four years. They also found room for an ancient Tony Tucker.

The IBF didn't rank Riddick Bowe in their top 10 but did rank Frans Botha (1), Axel Schulz (2), Joe Hipp (3), Buster Mathis (4), and Vaughn Bean (10). Again an ancient Tony Tucker popped up but no Bowe.

The WBA replicated the WBC's Tyson at number 1 ranking and had room for all the King's men including Peter McNeeley but no Big Daddy Bowe.

This is the scene that Riddick Bowe and Rock Newman found themselves in from the moment independent Bowe had the audacity to beat Holyfield for the title.

hide's cruiserweight speed befuddled bowe and then bowe's enormous size and weight advantages flattened herbie.

herbie also did not pace himself, threw too many shots with not quite enough effect, slowed down naturally and then was clubbed down repeatedly, his weak resistance ebbing more and more until half punches were sending hide down.

2 or 3 rds of looking great and then he'd had it, and he disappeared - it seemed - for a long time, after that fight.

Bowe was good, but never had the longevity or fought enough allcomers to qualify as a great. He pummelled Hide, and also a far inferior Gonzalez (,but dumped the WBC belt in a bin rather than fight Lennox Lewis, which if he had won that, would have been a legacy defining fight.
Lewis would've beat him though in my opinion. 8)
