Re: Jamie McDonnell
If his promoter is retired he did well to get him a shot at a vacant world title in his hometown. The fight was shown on an obscure channel but did this affect McDonnell's purse? - the figure quoted on here was a big one for a relatively unknown bantamweight.
I figured, with all due respect to McDonnell - that it was a case of a former player (Hobson) bank-rolling his way back into the big time. Yes, he did very well to get McDonnell home town advantage etc. Whatever armchair fans like us may think, there must have been reason for McDonnell to jump ship.
The general point I was trying to make is that it might not be good for a boxer if you're with a promoter who loses a shedload of money everytime he puts on a show. Hobson's done 2 shows this year and it seems he has lost a fortune on both. From what I've seen and heard as a fan, Hobson makes good money from his scrap metal businesses and can afford to dabble. Fair enough, its his money. I hope he can turn things around, recover his losses, and then some.

JimJim ... my response and meaning to the 2nd line of your post was the whole idea of moving to Matchroom was more exposure and more money. He is going to be the forgotten man quickly which is a shame!!
Hall will fight Butler in March or someone who suddenly sneaks into the IBF rankings, and my view is with regards to the Hall/Malinga fight thats the best we will see of Hall - he showed tremendous courage, heart and determination to win the title ... Hall is not world class and the likelihood is Hall will probably loose in his first defence unless some clever matchmaking and "maneouvering" in the rankings is sorted - and if I am proved right that will mean it will be a nightmare for Eddie to get McDonnell another shot at a world title.
Agree with you spud, that was obviously the point of jumping ship. I don't think he will become the forgotten man though. I would say in 12 months time Hall will be retired and McDonnell either back on top at world level, or in the mix.
So yes in the short term its a financial disaster for McDonnell, but I don't think it is necessarily the case in the long run. Plus, for Eddie and Sky, Barker is finished, Burns will lose his world title in March, Froch may well not win another world title fight, Rose will fall short in his title bid, and Bellew has a major rebuilding job on his hands and probably won't win a world title. McDonnell is in a good position in terms of his record (ie, not losing his title in the ring), his ranking, his age, and so on. Eddie can move him quickly and I would expect to see Jamie have a good 2014.

Dennis hasn't retired or is he a former player. He has put shows on in Sheffield for years. You may have been unaware of them but he has kept putting them on, but like a lot of promoters has found it harder to get TV backing.

BOTH, Jamie McDonnell & Stuey Hall have done outstandingly well in winning world titles. I think Stuey Halls achievement is even more noteworthy.
However, as good as they are in winning those fights I think they were fighting at the maximum level of their capabilities, which is why I dont think McDonnell will win another title.
Re: Jamie McDonnell
when McDonnell beat hall, it was one of the best british, commonwealth and European title fights I've yet seen. and also the best fight I've seen in Doncaster.
who'd have thought that both would win the IBF title - in brilliant battles - IN THE SAME YEAR? this is stunning.
for me, Jamie had too much variety in there, vs hall, and will win another thriller if they are matched again.
McDonnell is a funny one, sounds hopelessly disorganised outside the ring (losing his title not making the mandatory and trying to jump ship from hobson to hearn), seems to have no sense of boxing history (the SRL thing) or politics (he'd still be champ) and according to the hatfield high lot he's been off the rails with personal issues prior to the world title shot...BUT, he has been bloody well schooled, seems extremely fit, and produces inspired boxing and finishes strong in drawn out battles whenever there is a big prize on the line. I would not write McDonnell off, no sir...in other words, a guy who really seems articulate or coherent only in the ring, when it really matters.

If it is correct and that Hobson has 2 businesses - one makes a lot of money and the other loses a lot of money, you can bet your life that with a couple of swift inter-company recharges, both companies will break even.
He won't have big losses in one company and at the same time pay loads of tax for profits in another company.
Therefore he will make it so that both companies break even and he pays little or no tax - so don't feel too sorry for Hobson, it is not himself who is bankrolling these shows but the taxpayer !

I spoke about this today when someone said the samething.JimJim2009 wrote:How funny would it be if Hall announces he's signed with Matchroom ?!
However, remember now Hall has won a world title, Hobson does have a negoitiation period and then an extentiion if Hall was at the end of his contract.
What I think - Hall will be dissapointed at what the maximum amount he will receive for his 1st defence ... the lower the weight the money gets less and less ... the only way Hall will get a lot of dosh is if he fights abroad, or promoters get into a purse bid situation.
The biggest mistake Team McDonnell made in my view was thinking Jamie was actually worth more than what he was!!

Re: Jamie McDonnell
McDonnell will bounce back and will beat hall again. when, is the question.
who have the IBF got as the leading contender?
will Jamie have to fight an elim to get to hall? or even an elim then a final elim - we know what the IBF are like? - and if hobson's in no hurry to give McDonnell a shot...
could be a humbling experience for McDonnell and I hope he can maintain concentration & patience. hall will be gaining momentum and will be extra dangerous and I hope McDonnell can make sure that he'll be the same fighter he was before losing the title outside the ring.
at best, Jamie has a chance to beat a holder of a world title, in a rematch that the UK fight trade will desperately want to see, i.e. the first fight was exceptional and the stakes will be even higher next time.

1 NOT RATED
2 Vusi Malinga South Africa
3 Jamie McDonnell England
4 Stuart Hall England
5 Randy Caballero United States
6 Kohei Oba Japan
7 Julio Ceja Mexico
8 Karim Guerfi France
9 Daniel Rosas Mexico
10 Sergio Perales United States
11 Stephane Jamoye Belgium
12 Ryosuke Iwasa Japan
13 Lee Haskins England
14 Paulus Ambunda Namibia
15 Juan Payano Dominican Republic
So presumably McDonnell will be the top contender ahead of Caballero and Oba

Bantamweight is not one of the glamour weight divisions - there is not life changing money in it so if I had anything to do with Jamie I would have advised him to have taken the Malinga defence - Jamie in my view would have won that fight - if Team McDonnell were unhappy with the money I would have said "ok we will take the mandatory defence on the perceived sh*t money - and if there is not a significant increase we will move on after" ... if that option was taken then it would have brought valuable negotiation time with both his promoter and most importantly the IBF.
Jamie and his team are good people, there is no reason for me or anyone else to dislike them - its just they have got things so wrong.

Bantamweight is not one of the glamour weight divisions -.
correct but probably the one division with the most controvercy involving british fighters so that itself makes it more glamerous.and what would make a big earner would Hobson to make mcdonnell Halls voluntary.it would probably be a different fight now with hall on top of the world right now and mcdonnell not that good in his last 2 fights.would b interesting.would it b on allegedly or sky.would it go to purse bids who would win the battle of the bids.

If Jamie didn't like the sport much to start with, lord knows what he makes of it now !
I agree with you, Jamie would have beaten Malinga. I also agree that the purses in this division will not be life changing. Given the limited shelf-life of a British world champ in a lower weight division, I'd have thought his earnings potential would be at the best if he was headlining on sky sports, in IBF title defences. Presumably he did too ?!

Re: Jamie McDonnell
after such a fuss was made re "Doncaster's first world champ" it is indeed shocking that being stripped of the title - even in the midst of a contract dispute - was allowed to happen.
Jamie may have to fight someone highly motivated such as ceja or malinga - or someone of that ilk - in all likelihood a 12-round "grueller" (as all of Jamie's important fights have been, vs hall, jamoye & ceja), just so he can get a crack at hall, whom he's already beaten, in one of the toughest domestic battles I've come across, a fight that promises to be even tougher, given the momentum hall has built in the last couple of fights. as such, jamie may have to put in 24 gruelling rounds, this time maybe without being the home fighter, there's a better chance of the decisions going against him now - can McDonnell maintain concentration, and motivation, just to get back where he was already?
I suppose it all hinges on the board of control's decision regarding whom McDonnell is really fighting for, hobson - who's done a great job bringing McDonnell AND hall to the same title, in the same year, in fight of the year candidates - or matchroom...if Jamie is still with hobson, we know Jamie wants the rematch (surely), we know hall wants it: how eager will hobson be to make it happen?

Hobson does not like Eddie Hearn too much.
Hobason does not like Team McDonnell too much.
Frank W arren wants Paul Butler to fight Hall in a voluntary defence of Halls title.
The only way I see Hall & McDonnell fighting again is through a purse bids situation.
