In 1943 Sugar Ray Robinson was drafted in the US Army and was honorably discharged a year later without ever going overseas. As the story goes, Robinson tripped in the barracks and hit his head and blacked out. A hospital report stated that he had suffered a bad case of amnesia and he was given an honorable discharge in June of 1943. There was speculation that Robinson faked the whole thing to avoid going overseas. Some newspaper columns branded him a deserter and he was called unpatriotic in some circles.
Does anyone know if the whole story ever came out on this, or was it just as simple as it was reported? Can anyone provide any more info? Robinson was given sodium amytal - truth serum- in order to discover what had really happened to him, but it proved ineffective.
