Jamie Speight gets a "world title shot"
Jamie Speight gets a "world title shot"
After losing his last 4 fights Jamie has been sanctioned to fight for the WBU vacant bantamweight title ?
What is the deal with the WBU now ? belt looks different to the Hatton belt and I thought the board had refused to recognise the wbu ?

There's now a German and a US version of the WBU that are wrangling over lineage, not that anyone would actually want to be associated with it. This will probably be a GBA show so it has nothing to do with the board, the solution to me would be to ban anyone who fights on these shows in the UK from fighting here for a couple of years, hopefully that would cut out these shows.

90% of joe public will not have a clue, they will think its a world title fight, when I won the british masters title I had loads of people telling me what a great thing it was to be british champion, theres way too many stupid bloody titles around these days, this is just another on the list, not really the fighters fault, a fights a fight but if the fighter thinks hes a world champ then he needs to give his head a shake

The example I give is a lad in our town won the EBF (White Collar) Light Heavyweight Title - it was an entertaing scrap but lacked quality, the lad was extremely proud of himself and he deserved a well done, but, to have people on his facebook feed saying he was "British Champion" ... one even said maybe a world title soon made me nearly choke.
I completely agree with people who say its not the fighters fault he deserves all the plaudits that come his way as he is brave enough to get in the ring in the first place ... I used to blame the promoter, but dont anymore as I firmly believe the promoter has a business to run and money to make to pay the bills.
So not blaming the promoter or the fighter ... who the f*ck is to blame??

Not quite as easy as that though is it. As has been stated in many other threads, this would contravene various EU directives and could end up in court. I just wish the Board would come clean and either take hard decisive action or admit they are powerless to do anything.expe wrote:the solution to me would be to ban anyone who fights on these shows in the UK from fighting here for a couple of years, hooefully that would cut out these shows.
Re: Jamie Speight gets a "world title shot"
The EU should have no power over sport, rules that were made for businesses are being applied in ways they were never intended to be. Do the EU have any power over the board anyway? The Insider wrote:Not quite as easy as that though is it. not sure whos fault it is, maybe its the hardcore boxing fans fault, maybe we should get with the times, the white collar, unlicensed, semi pro stuff gets on my tits, ive never seen any of them that would do any good as a pro, the best white collar has to offer at any weight would get bashed by most average boxers, I also have a pal who is 7-0 as a white collar boxer and is a champion of some sort and i had to listen to a debate in my mums pub the other week on if he would be able to beat amir khan because hes stopped 4 out of his 7 wins and khan is obviously chinny, my mates response was If I land its all over, I replied what like maidana did and khan got through that, not 1 person in the room knew who maidana was and it was 2 days after he just bashed broner, like it or not us real boxing fans are in the minority, big time, id class myself as a decent honest hard working pro and if my mate went more than 2 rounds with me id think about hanging em up, hes rubbish but he holds a belt that says hes the champ so that's what he is, who am I to argue, boxing is not for the hardcore, its for the casuals, I think that sucks but it is what it is, if they stop coming the game would be over, theres not enough hardcore fans around to sustain the game we love, love them or hate them, we need the idiots

Stefy bull told Jaime on twitter it isn't recognised by the board he seemed adamant by the time it happened it would be something to do with a court case pending against the board

Ive said to you before Curtis that your welcome to come and take a look at one of my shows, i honestly think you would be pleasantly surprised.
A lot of our lads train day in day out with Pro's , and some of the lads ive seen turning pro lately i know 100% ive got quite a few lads capable of making pro careers.
Ive had former British champions box on my shows, my next one has a former English Champion on it, Ive had a lad whos turned pro after boxing on my shows who is a current 11-0 prospect, obviously not all are that calibre, some are having their first ever bout, but with 20+ bouts on the show you'll find the standard pretty descent.
Obviously being champion on my shows doesnt mean they are as good as pro champions, far from it, but what i believe it does show is they can become pro and be competing at area level eventually, which for some thats a good achievement.
Ive had unbeaten pro prospects box on my shows to help along the comeback trail following an injury and struggle with the opposition (which i posted a video on here)
Its not everyones cup of tea but it has its place now and in all honesty i believe it helps the sport grow by providing more pro boxers and more fans, not every 22 year old boxer can afford to give up their spare time for free to box amateur and have to earn from it to boost their home finances.
March 1st, Forum Nightclub, Burton Street, Nottingham,NG1 4AA, 12 Noon til 5:30pm... Your more than welcome.
Re: Jamie Speight gets a "world title shot"
I watched "The Fighter" for the first time the other day, and was amused at how it painted Ward's career as an ascent to the title, missing out everything in between. I was also amused that it painted him as having finally climbed the mountain and become a world champ, and it being the great achievement of his life, when it reality, he vacated the WBU title immediately after knocking out Neary, and his next fight was a ten rounder for no belt. The WBU has never been worth anything.

I admire your passion for the white collar scene Damien, I can only go on what I've seen, I've trained along side plenty of white collar lads in gyms myself and never seen one that's any good, that's not saying they are not worthy of boxing, far from it, it just annoys me that the REAL world champions, British champs euro champs get put in the same bracket as the white collar champs when us real fans know it would be a total mismatch, but like I said we the real fans are in the minority, maybe a bit snobby of me but that's my feelings on it, respect the work you are doing pal and its not a slight on you at all, its more a dig at the casual fans who don't know what the hell they are talking about but like I said earlier, we need the casuals or the game is dead

There are some unlicensed who could operate at a low level as a pro. None would be anywhere near top class or they would have gone pro very quickly i.e Blackwell and Purdy.

The obvious problem Boxing has with these white collar shows is that a lot of the fights are entertaining scraps and whats more the result of the fight is not predictable. However the fights are sh*te in the quality department.

There was a piece in the tabloids about Lee McAllister the other week there, and it described him as a 2 weight world champ(he held WBU at LW and LWW)
I like Lee and he is a 2 weight Commonwealth champ and a European and British title challenger and thats to be admired but give him the credit for that insted of phoney world championships

the simple thing to do is not box for these titles if fighters refuse to use the titles then it wont be long till they go away

Re: Jamie Speight gets a "world title shot"
as fighters we don't get to fight as often as we want so I don't blame any fighter for taking any opportunity that's given, we don't fight very often and when we do we don't get great money so its hard to turn down fights on principle if bills need paying, not sure what the answer is but I don't blame the fighters
Re: Jamie Speight gets a "world title shot"
The media are to blame. Local, online, national, international, and television. Decent journalists could ruin the credibility of the non-titles with ease if they put on something even approaching a united front.
