Could boxrec become the major governing body in the world?
I hate world titles. But I hate world tidles more. Super champions, diamond champions, super diamond disco champions. I think they totally devalue the sport and as a fan (not a participant) I cannot see the value historically in holding a title belt with no lineage or history.
I wish any British world champion well its taken skill to get there but I'm sorry you aren't a world champion in a true fans eyes until you beat the man who beat the man.
I think everyone in the world who likes boxing looks at boxrec. What would be the harm in tracing back the lineage of each original title and crowning a champion. Whilst at the same time completely ignoring all the other 'non profit' organisations.
Jose Sulliman must have a heart of gold because that c-u-n-t has put in more charity work then Lenny Henry.
Anyway I think it's a goer. Boxrec for world domination.
Discuss.

You need a block of TV execs and promoters to stand together and say they will not recognise the world titles on offer until the ludicrous situation is sorted out and there is one belt per weight class.
If the WBC, WBA and IBF unified into one organisation then everyone would recognise the belt. Long term it would massively benefit the sport but I think promoters and boxers to an extent would be too short sighted to see the benefit it would bring.
It would be interesting to hear what current boxers think about 1 world champ per weight class as it would mean people like Burns, Haye and Froch may never have been able to call themselves world champion.
Until boxing gets some sort of body to run the sport and stamps down on the proliferation of world titles and sorts out drug testing and judging irregularities etc then I think boxing will continue doing damage to itself.
I love the sport but its a shame that it could be so much better

What a stupid post !
Re: Could boxrec become the major governing body in the world?
What boxing lacks is a single worldwide regulatory body. In a sport where fighters can be seriously harmed its quite terrifying there's no central leadership. The multiple titles suit fighters and promoters and that's why they exist. Ricky Burns for example is really just a good contender but how much money does that generate?
Re: Could boxrec become the major governing body in the world?
A fight league were regardless of who people fight they are rated on it, like zilch points for catchweight.
I think if enough people followed & casuals did you might start possibly getting fans boycotting poor matches but fans never will

We can all moan but all these titles will never ever stop, they will increase ... we can come out with our opinions but at the end of the day boxing is a business and thats why boxing will continue to churn out these sh*te titles.

Re: Could boxrec become the major governing body in the world?
Not the daftest idea ever.... these bodies have been around in some cases for decades, and the biggest change to society in the past 30 years or so has been the internet, which has changed so many aspects of life, and any supreme governing body would need the best set of rankings it is possible to get. If such a ratings system was achievable, you could see boxrec coming into the frame for obvious reasons.
Re: Could boxrec become the major governing body in the world?
I think the heyday of the dodgy world body/title was maybe 10-15 years ago, when we had the likes of the IBC/WAA/IBA/WBU/WBF/IBO knocking around, in addition to the "big four".
They've largely fallen out of fashion (at least in the UK), and the WBA/WBC have bravely stepped in with their own wanky multiple versions of the world title, and various international belts (see Manuel Charr for the best example of this twattery).

if you had Won A World Title would you still think the same? "I won the WBC World Title in the 2010 defended it twice but I don't class my self as a world champion"
While Watching Ricky Burns have you ever said Iv boxed him, he beat but guys look where he now He's World Champion? I think that disrespectful towards boxers thats have had won a world Title.

I don't think it's disrespectful at all. If your world champion your meant to be the best in the world or at least lineage determine that you are the man that best the man.Londonirish wrote:Jeff Thomas wrote:I hate world titles.

In fact I'd go as far to say the opposite- some fighters winning manufactured works titles is insulting to true champions.
Good luck to them ... Make as much money as you can but my interest as a fan means I have to draw a line somewhere
Re: Could boxrec become the major governing body in the world?
I allway's class it as four world champions & the best try to unify them.
You can get average world champions, good world champions & great world champions & occasionallya weak/lucky world champion.
You here all the story's from the 50's that great fighters got frozen out etc.& how long Archie Moore had to wait to get a crack, atleast now you get to filter through & see who is special

That's pretty much what the Ring magazine tried.
Re: Could boxrec become the major governing body in the world?
wtf's a "true" world champion?
so if you're a 10 stone man you've got to be able to EVERY other 10 stone man on the planet to be the true champion. Do you think it would be better if there was just one world champion in each division? What about all those other fighters that are brilliant in their own rights. Mathematically, to award only 4 World Champions is few enough as it is.
I saw this question and thought it was columbo straight away.

Re: Could boxrec become the major governing body in the world?
Boxing desperately needs one single governing body to control the sport. The current setup sucks.
One champion per division is the way to go, but strict rules need to be in place to ensure the champion fights regularly, no excuses. Injury for example should see the title become vacant, with the champion having the option to challenge for it again within a specified time period. There also needs to be something like a bronze, silver and gold (gold = champion) belt system in order to create enough meaningful opportunities for fighters at world level as one title only per division would seriously limit opportunity. As long as the titles are clearly ranked and understood, and controlled by one organisation it should work.

Sometimes (late at night) I wonder if the BBBofC should have an officially recognised world champion of their own (with a decent Lonsdale quality belt) but haven't really thought it through.

Rickey Burns has won the WBO at S-Feather and Lightweight... Scott Quigg is the WBA. Darren Barker won the IBF and then lost it on his 1st defence.. Stuart Hall just Won the (Vacant) IBF World Title, what ever way you look at it he is Now the IBF World Champ (weather or he deserved the chance of fighting for it).. There's more like Gavin Rees etc they all won a World Title!! I understand with the WBU and the WBF etc but what you said I think is silly and you Cant take away that they won a World Title so IMO its being disrespectful towards these fighters... I know a few people that won the British Masters Title and then let Fans that dont know much about boxing think that was The British Title, now that wrong!! The Masters ain't as good as the S-Area....
Re: Could boxrec become the major governing body in the world?
The ever increasing amount of titles doesn't bother me like it used too, boxing is a dangerous sport and anything that helps more boxers earn decent money is a good thing in my opinion. I know who the top guys in a division are regardless of who holds what belt, so it really makes no difference.
I do miss the drive to unify the various titles that doesn't seem to exist anymore.

That's spot on.....
Re: Could boxrec become the major governing body in the world?
It doesn't bother me because I know it's all nonsense.
When Povetkin was walking around calling himself a World Champion (WBA Normal), I didn't regard him as such and no decision by an arbitrary body is going to convince me of such. Then you have blatant contradictions like Lamont Peterson being stripped by one body and not by another for the same drug infringement in the same fight. When you have the different bodies playing a different game, then you know it is time to ignore them. My approach is to use the 4 bodies champions as a guide to the guys who fill 4-5 of the top 10-12 spots and then choose for myself from there.
Having another "independent" organisation beginning to award their own title will simply cloud the issue further rather than create clarity. The suggestion of TV companies becoming Title Awarding bodies sounds reasonable until you end with a Showtime World Champion and a HBO World Champion and then along comes the Al Jazeera World Champion and not to be outdone the Disney World Champion.

agree completely. I cant remember the last time I heard somebody shouting about wanting to unify. Seems a thing of the past. Quite dissapointingLondonirish wrote:SNG wrote:The ever increasing amount of titles doesn't bother me like it used too, boxing is a dangerous sport and anything that helps more boxers earn decent money is a good thing in my opinion.
