14 months from now to beat Mike Tyson's record
Just read elsewhere that Hughie Fury has 14 months to beat Iron Mike Tyson's record of the youngest heavyweight champion of all time.
Part of me thinks the team know damn well there isn't a hope in hell, and are just trying to milk the publicity whilst they can.
I've seen a lot of Hughie's fights and I came to the strange conclusion that he was actually getting worse. I accept that's not really possible, as he has gained experience and developed etc as he has gone along, but to me, that six rounder he had on the Haskins/Booth undercard before xmas, he looked dreadful. He looked better in his first 2-3 fights, than he did when he'd had another ten. I concluded he has picked up a lot of bad habits. I could be totally wrong though, and maybe he'll start to shine.
Anyway, to indulge the hype, there is no realistic way he could get to a genuine world title fight in 14 months time without facing some of the British crop - obviously not his cousin, but Chisora and Price are standing in his way, so to speak, and if Hughie doesn't get through the domestic championship aspect of his career quickly, he'll be up against Anthony Joshua, as I would imagine Joshua will be at British title level by the end of 2014.
An ambitious but realistic start to 2014 would be to match Hughie with Sprott and McDermott, so all concerned know where he is at.
Two other factors would affect his chances - Wlad retiring or losing, thus fragmenting all the titles he holds, which in turn would create a lot more title opportunities, and secondly cousin Tyson becoming a major title holder.

Realistically Hughie should never really be considered a potential world champion even though its a bad era. I appreciate that hes young and will improve but for me, winning the british title would be a great achievement for him

Re: 14 months from now to beat Mike Tyson's record
Indulging the hype, there's two aspects to it really - firstly a capability element (can he become good enough) and secondly, would he in any event get the opportunity. Tyson Fury has held a top ten ranking for over 12 months and hasn't had a world title fight yet. I appreciate the team have had six months gone down the pan due to the Haye situation but I question whether Hennessey can deliver a world title fight for Fury (where he wouldn't be signing his future to K2 and accepting the shxxty end of the stick from them contractually). In other words if Tyson Fury can't get a world title fight how on earth will Hughie ?
Re: 14 months from now to beat Mike Tyson's record
It's not going to happen to Hughie Fury. I do t know if any of the family believe the hype or not but that's all it is, hype. He can fight but he's not shown that he can win a world title in 14 months. Nowhere near.

Re: 14 months from now to beat Mike Tyson's record
Four more years in the amatuers would have done Hughie the world of good, he would have likely beaten Joe Joyce and would get the chance to gain to class experience at the Euros and world champs against the likes of Magomedrasul Majidov ,Ivan Dychko, Roberto Cammarelle, Magomed Omarov ,Yoandi Toirac and Filip Hrgović year in year out. He could have also gained pro experience by competeing in the WSB and would have more than likely made it to the next olympics mean when he did sign a pro contract he would have got a better deal. This would be a lot better to his development than fighting bums and he could still go to training camps with Tyson and spar with top pro's. Also the Furys said they have to pay out of there own pocket for there opponents this means Hughie cant be making much money, he would probebly make more money off amatuer funding an prize money in the WSB

Hughie would never of moved to Sheffield or gone on the road with the WSB. Staying with his dad was the only option.

I agree with you there but do you think that would have been a better way to develop him?mickey1975 wrote:Hughie would never of moved to Sheffield or gone on the road with the WSB. Staying with his dad was the only option.
Re: 14 months from now to beat Mike Tyson's record
I think Hughie is developing fine.
Re: 14 months from now to beat Mike Tyson's record
I agree forget the record, I actually thought they would give it a go but the opponents don't give him a hope in hell. He is 19 people need to remember.Coco wrote:I think Hughie is developing fine.

I think he's burnt out and needs a good rest then starts to take more meaningful fights less often. The last 2 I saw him in (Whitwick and Bristol) he looked tired and uninterested. Hes being bought along ok but it's hard to assess his ability until he fights someone of worth. Anything can happen for the British title at the minute so in 6 months time no doubt he will be in the mix but talk of World titles are just that........ Talk, I'm afraid.

Completely agree .. time and time again we heap too much pressure on fighters to do well. The Insider wrote:I think he's burnt out and needs a good rest then starts to take more meaningful fights less often. I also think Team Fury are putting too much on Hughie's shoulders - let him be to get on with it ... the hype on the lad can start when he has unequivocally proved himself at domestic level.
I honestly think he can do well ... I just want to see improved punch power to get himself out of the sh*t which he will have to do when he goes through the levels to reach the top.

I think 14 months and maybe a British title win. Tops!
Re: 14 months from now to beat Mike Tyson's record
I remember a tweet from Hughie a couple of months back saying something like "fight again next week. Hope my hands hold up".
If he does have a problem with them that would explain the run of listless points decisions.
I was so impressed with him in his debut & next bout then he seemed to go off the boil. He has poise, which I like. I hope he can progress although Tysons record won't get beaten in my lifetime.

Re: 14 months from now to beat Mike Tyson's record
this is what i have said all along and even Peter fury realised it by the end of last year hence the recent rest. Whether they have really learnt their lesson and go slow with him next year remains to be seen. All the talk of Tysons record was hype he is a big heavy and therefore won't mature physically as fast as iron MIke.The Insider wrote:I think he's burnt out and needs a good rest then starts to take more meaningful fights less often. I wonder if the vital importance of selecting the "right" opponents has been lost amid the hurry to line up fight after fight after fight ?Taansend wrote:I remember a tweet from Hughie a couple of months back saying something like "fight again next week. Hope my hands hold up".

I recall Bill Clayton, Tyson's first manager/promoter, stressing the importance of picking the right opponents every time Iron Mike fought. "Nothing..... nothing is as important as that".
Building an unbeaten run and creating minor trade interest by fighting every 2-3 weeks is one thing, but Fury hasn't even been a pro a year and several of his performances have absolutely sucked. Good luck to the lad though.
Re: 14 months from now to beat Mike Tyson's record
yeah actually he hasn't been handled that well -he has been rushed and over trained/over fought for a guy still not fully physically mature. With luck they will get away with this and he will reach his potential around 25 if they are unlucky they will have a series of injuries from over doing it too early and a fighter who has a short and under achieving career. i like Peter Fury but he hasn't made the smartest decisons in this area so far. Let's hope he has learnt there were signs that he realised Hughie needed to slow down at the end of last year lets hope they realise he needs a lot more time yet.

Well unless he gets chucked in at the deep end very soon there's no way he'll beat the record.
