Bowe was good,but never had the longevity or fought enough allcomers to qualify as a great. He pummelled Hide,and also a far inferior Gonzalez (,but dumped the WBC belt in a bin rather than fight Lennox Lewis,which if he had won that,would have been a legacy defining fight.
Lewis would've beat him though in my opinion. 8)

Probably Lewis would have beaten Bowe (and for that matter Holyfield) only post-McCall, when Stewart applied some more rounded skills and strategy to his toolbox. Certainly there was a couple of years before that where probably both Holyfield and Bowe were the premier heavies, and Lewis was as the third emerging force in the heavyweights.

Well certainly that's the most negative slant anyone can put on Riddick Bowe I suppose. I for one like the way he would pummel an overmatched opponent inside one or two rounds, rather than jabbing at them for eleven or twelve stultefying rounds.

Bowe was the undisputed heavyweight champion, and came to wage war. He was thrilling. And his three fights with a prime Evander Holyfield are superior to the Klitschko's one single fight against a Great, a six round loss to a nearly 40 year old Lennox Lewis.

As for Golota, I remember a shot Riddick Bowe decking Golota, breaking his jaw, and making Golota ask Roger Bloodworth to stop the fight. There was no quit in Riddick Bowe when the tables were turned on him. There's a lot of quit in the Klitschko brothers.

i remember bowe rolling around on the floor virtually begging the ref to stop the fight against golota twice,as for a prime holyfield,didnt holyfield have a heart problem going into the 3rd fight and had bowe on the canvas for the first time in his career? bowe was a bully and when he got bullied i.e by golota he couldnt take it,he should of been DQed a few times in his career kicking opponents and punching them when they were down instead he was protected by the powers that be in boxing on the basis of him being next to challenge for the title. i liked bowe but he never lived upto his potential after beating holyfield the first time. i think rock newman held him back,he should of steamed up with a more established trainer imo

Based on the replay at 15:40 it looks as if Klitschko's jab and right hand caught Hide on the side of the head. Still not the reaction you'd expect from those types of shots though.

In retrospect it's a shame Hide got Vitali and not the softer chinned brother. Still probably would have got blasted out, but you never know!

Looking back at this fight (and many thanks for the reminder) the thing that really strikes me is just how fragile Bowe and emotional gets when things do not go his way.

I'd forgotten how well Herbie (to his immense credit) managed to upset him, so did that lunatic Golota and I seem to remember Riddick losing it against a couple of other guys as well. The more I think about it; the more convinced I am that Lewis would have won any fight with Bowe because Riddick was so highly-strung and could be forced into basic mistakes when he was rattled.

Rock Newman - who I always disliked - may well have understand this dynamic and done his client a favour by dodging the Lennox showdown. Sadly, we will never know.

Of course, the counter-argument to viewing Bowe as the big guy who could lose the plot and his cool when faced by a determined opponent who was prepared to take the fight to him is the Holyfield series.

Interesting view, although I doubt anybody wound him up as much as Gonzalez - who had beaten him as an amateur - yet Bowe gave him a brutal beating.
