How good is Trevor Berbick

Post by kovit »

I would please like to know how good is former WBC Heavyweight Champion Trevor Berbick one of the two champions who fought both Ali and Tyson? What was his strength and weakness?

Berbick had an awkward style that was confusing enough for Pinklon Thomas to surrender his title to Berbick.

Neil Hunter says " Trevor Berbick possessed the unusual ability to outmuscle boxers and outbox punchers. He was no flashy boxer, but what he had was cunning, durability and power, and his never ending assault would slowly break down the will power of his opponent."

Iron Mike, who seemed stunned by Berbick's power in the post fight interview: "He was very strong actually, VERY STRONG!! I didn't know he was strong like that! I knew he'd be strong I didn't think he'd be as strong as me!"

Today Berbick lives in Montreal and trains young fighters. He has 3 children with his 1st wife in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and 3 children with his 2nd wife, in Florida. He was, and still is, a Jamaican Hero.

Berbick also could take a great punch and was pretty crafty at not taking the full force of a blow with a little roll or deflection. He lengthened his career considerably by doing this.

That said, he still got starched by two big hitters, Bernardo Mercado and Mike Tyson, in one and two rounds respectively.

What he did to Greg Page was tremendous at the time, totally roughed him up and had him perplexed, even with Page's injury.

I have a tape of Berbick vs a Japanese wrestler and the wrestler kept kicking Berbick in the leg and he went crazy and jumped out of the ring and left the arena. I guess he didnt understand what was going on and when the wrestler started kicking at Berbick he went ape shit. It was funny  :TU:

The thing I always thought about Berbick is whenever he lost he looked extremely bad. Another thing I noticed about him was when he won it was because he had the ability to bring the guy he was fighting down to a low leavel. Sort of like if you have ever played a game of pool against a bad opponent your leavel of skill goes down also.

I thought Berbick had been deported to Jamacia a few years ago?

When thinking of Berbick many people think of his lose to Tyson but another 'highlight; of his career was his crushing of Big John Tate.

Never thought about it that way, but it is very true. My cousin sucks at pool and I am a decent player, but he is so bad he totally screws the game up and can beat me from time to time.

I recall his fight with Holmes. He thoroughly confused the champion, even forced him into the corner and landed some good shots. Holmes disliked him I think because Berbick broke his string of consecutive KOs, a record still held by the late Tommy Burns, another T.B.

I was really disappointed in his terrible showing against ST Gordon. It was like he was doped. Hardly threw a punch, seemed frozen. Weird.

The Gordon fight is a good example of Berbick looking very bad whenever he lost. It almost looked like he was finished.
