Akinwande fights again

Post by jomothepure »

On the Ikeke-Abraham card Dec 10th. IBF intercontinental title, so that will be 12 rounds if TBA is up to it.

I proposed that a while ago. No one seemed to appreciate the sheer pugilistic skillful entertainment that fight would bring. Involve John Ruiz in things and you've got the biggest sporting wonder in history.

Truthfully, I predict an Akinwande-Austin or Lyakevich IBF eliminator some time in 2006, such is the hotbed of talent that the HW division is currently

It would not shock me either, there has been whispers of a Valuev v Akinwande fight all year.

Akinwande is not bad, he has a great jab and decent power i saw his last 2 fights and he looks good for a 40 year old.
some people have only watched the Lewis fight and have no idea about Akinwande's ability.

I really fancied Henry had the skills to beat Holyfield when they should have fought in 1998...

He is a very talented guy, just doesnt seem to have his heart 100% in the game and doesnt have the best team around him....

I was ringside for one of Akinwandes very early professional bouts when his stopped the late Tucker Richards, man that seems years ago now. Even then there was all that talk of him fighting Herbie Hide which of course never happened.

I do remember Akinwandes long Jab and how tall and skinny he looked back then.

Hoffman also looks to be getting back into action on the same card. No opponent for either yet

Akinwande is pushing 40 now, shouldn't really be in the ring. Michael Moorer is younger than him and had some form going into his retirement, people seemed to be glad that he packed it in, but don't seem to be upset that Akinwande is continueing.

That is a pretty good point. Remember he only came out of what was just about retirement this year as an opponent for Valuev. Not many people rushed to say "shit, akinwande's going to get stuffed."

In general I think he's fairly awkward and not particularly susceptable to too much of a beating. Mahone has a decent punch, we'll see what happens

Whether he should be continuing (as in, what's the point) is valid too, although being involved in some sort of eliminator may not be entirely laughable although you may think it.

I do wonder if its the fact that Akinwande has had a big connection with Britain that makes it more acceptable on this forum.

If I started a thread saying should Akinwande retire, or should Francis retire it would get a mixed response. If I said Moorer, Holyfield, Bowe, Tyson and a few few past the 37 year mark with no British connection it would be a unaminous yes.

Believe it or not, there's a thread on the current scene at the moment - "best heavy prospects over 40"

http://www.boxrec.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=36578

Interesting about tying it in with country connections. Personally, I just have the feeling that age shouldn't' be an overly influencial factor on whether you should retire or not. Of course, there is the whole thing of thinning 'whatevers' making you more susceptable, whether due to age, a severe beating, or an existing abnormality, in which case I'd say to your Mesi's, you're Holy's etc. hang 'em up before your brain and or body regrets it.

Then you've got the guys who are in it for the money, are in poor shape, and are putting £££ before their health - that's your Tyson's, your Bowe's, your Tubbs'

Akinwande I'd personally leave be. He's relatively fit (granted, I havn't seen him for quite a while) as far as you know he's committed (ie. no money worries) and he remains competitive - at least, against the opposition he's faired against since his return.

I was thinking about the over 40's club and I thought of an idea that could generate a bit of money for promoters, interest in the fighters and safety in the game.

Why not a senior circuit tour - from 37+. Only fighters of that age are allowed to fight. A title is on the line and only the winner of that title is allowed to challenge for a geniune version of the world title (and therefore someone under the age bracket). Minute he challenges for the proper title, he has to vacate the OAP world title.

If a fighter is a geniune world champion and turns 37 then he of course will be allowed to continue defending his champions - if senior fighter loses his world title (or a world title challenge) controvesially, then he does reserve the right to appeal to the governing body for a rematch.

I have thought about that a couple of times. Certainly big $$$ could still be made for the fighters involved. And presumably the physical deterioration of fighters of that age would be met with a loss in punch power from the opponent

Akinwande have been sparring with Povetkin and Leo Nolan for this fight. Povetkin will meet Willlie Chapman next saturday after the scheduled opponent have been refused entry in Germany.

Freheit or Bubi - can you give your thoughts to the Ruiz-Valuev card. Obviously there's fights still to be added to it but other than Povetkin there's nothing at all of note - Ali's fight will be a formality (not even a title fight - not that that means anything, since the female's titles are even more arse over elbow than the men's)

The point is really - why was Koc-Vidoz moved to January? Was it simply a money-spinner (2 cards=2x money) or is there an injury or something that had it taken off next weekend's card?

I dont know the answer but ARD only have a certain time avaiable so they might have postponed until january where it will be co-main event
The card have been sold to over 30 countries, including norwegian public TV!, I wonder if you will get to see it.

Simpler would simply be a seniors tour, same as Tennis and Golf.

Akinwande, Holyfield, Mercer, Donald, Bowe, Tyson, Williamson, Clay-Bey, Sanders, Golota, McCall, Cole, Tubbs.

With the right promotion, those fights could sell. 10 rounders.

Mercer v Holyfield

Golota v McCall
*******************
Tyson v Clay-Bey

Bowe v Sanders

Wouldn't need much selling would it?
