Joseph Parker (Commonwealth heavyweight)
Joseph Parker (Commonwealth heavyweight)
Anybody know much about this guy?
22 years old, a potentially interesting prospect on the Commonwealth scene. Didn't qualify for the 2012 Olympics and turned pro shortly after that. Not sure how well regarded he was as an amateur but saw he failed to make the quarters at the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
Record stands at 7-0 with 6 KO's, including a second round stoppage of an ancient Frans Botha.

Is he a Kiwi? If it's who I think it is, he's quite heavily hyped down there I think.johnswan1 wrote:Anybody know much about this guy?

Yeah he's a Kiwi. Highlights from Botha fight here. Next bout against former Audley & Nelson opponent George Arias. Both beat him on points.

Just looking at those highlights, he looks pretty talented to me. Good technique, a good boxing brain by the looks of things and he seems to have power aswell! Good prospect.johnswan1 wrote:Yeah he's a Kiwi. Highlights from Botha fight here.

Very talented and very promising. He was highly touted as an amateur but seemed to just miss out in the bigger tourneys. Certainly one to keep an eye on.

I tend to take international amateur competition accomplishments with a pinch of salt as quite often you'll watch a fight and see one guy landing shots that arent even being scored by the judges and the "favourite" scoring with every single thing he throws. There seems to be a lot of shadiness in that regard to me.Boxing Prospect wrote:Very talented and very promising. One of the main problem for him is the woeful standard of heavyweights in New Zealand, its quite surprising considering there are loads of big guys down there, but they just don't seem to be able to find that many of a good quality.

As famous Kiwi Jack "the Muss" once said: "too much weights, not enough speed work. Useless prick".Old bones Ian wrote:its quite surprising considering there are loads of big guys down there
Re: Joseph Parker (Commonwealth heavyweight)
Decent finish vs Botha...looked like he pulled out of free shot a Botha right at the end; fair play to him.
I thought he looked almost like a cruiser in that fight, but weighed 226 apparently.
Will need to do some travelling to pick up decent experience unless he's got backers who can stump-up to bring decent opponents over.
