Re: Tyson Fury enjoyed his selection box over Crimbo
It tells you something but not the whole story.
I think they've been lost to American football and basketball, not necessarily the NFL and NBA i.e. the kids that didn't go to boxing gyms because they played football/basketball in school and or college have obviously not all made it to the pros but they still didn't box. People have short memories, you don't have to go back too far to find high school/college sports teams with very few (if any) black players, it's totally different now.

Mate, see this as a separate point to mine. I'm not talking about the current dearth of quality US heavyweights, I'm simply pointing to tangible examples that expose the fallacy of making assumptions of capability based on ability in other sports and demonstrable generic assets such as strength and speed.Aden wrote:It tells you something but not the whole story.

Fair one. Agreed.
Re: Tyson Fury enjoyed his selection box over Crimbo
Usain Bolt is faster than Tyson Fury, but he's smaller, probably isn't as strong and 6 months training wouldn't come anywhere near to matching the years of work Tyson has put in and his stamina would be shocking, even if he had the skill, he wouldn't last a round because he's conditioned to run for 10 seconds, then stop. Attempting to use the whole body for 36 minutes just wouldn't be possible for him and the same goes for distance runners, because they train to keep the same pace, rather than to make big explosive movements like a boxer does. The sports most suited for converting from are probably football and rugby, because they both require continuous movement, followed by bursts of activity and footwork is important in both sports.

No way Bolt could tarmac a 50ft x 10ft drive for 800 quid cash either

Conversely, despite his impressive footwork I believe Bruce Forsyth would have been too prone to leaving his chin out to dry. And his rug ending up in Row Z.

Probably is a bit harsh but you can't hide that belly. I know what shape I'm expecting to see Fury in at the Copperbox and what kind of level his opponent will be though.n1ebf wrote:actually looking at it - and we don't know how long they'd been doing that - I think Fury has some determination, and some muscle tone in those arms and legs. Re: Tyson Fury enjoyed his selection box over Crimbo
okay, is anybody on this thread saying that a non-contact athlete can't learn to box and compete with a contact athlete?
There's a lad from my town who was a 25yr beach bum doing drugs and giving out flyers. Maybe 26. He's polishing his IBF belt right now. Someone gonna tell me if you got a 6 foot 5 inch tall super-human into a gym you couldn't teach him to look after himself against a pro who's weight seems to go up and down like a yoyo?

Do you mean Stuart Hall by any chance? Quality amateur who had been around the game all his life?n1ebf wrote:okay, is anybody on this thread saying that a non-contact athlete can't learn to box and compete with a contact athlete?

Look, there will be a lot of untapped talent out there, we will never know though.
Re: Tyson Fury enjoyed his selection box over Crimbo
It would take years for him to pick up the ability and physical characteristics to box. He probably hasn't run more than a mile for years and he's never boxed, compared to Fury being brought up in a community where fighting is a normal thing and boxing since he was a small child and even in the shape he's in now, he could still probably beat Bolt easily in a long distance run.n1ebf wrote:okay, is anybody on this thread saying that a non-contact athlete can't learn to box and compete with a contact athlete?

Re: Tyson Fury enjoyed his selection box over Crimbo
I would bet a lot of money that Tyson Fury would win easily in a fight against Usain Bolt.
I also think Bolt would win easily in a sprint.
I can't see either beating Tiger Woods in golf either.

I thought Hughie had seriously blown up for a moment before I realized he wasn't the second guy.

So your little outburst (over a couple of days mind) and nasty PMes to other posters wasn't enough to prove what a total c.u.n.t that you really are, you've excelled yourself in this threadn1ebf wrote:Rubbish. I suspect there's plenty of disagreement with your comments on these boards. Usain Bolt probably doesn't drink alcohol in pubs until he's p*ssed, he probably doesn't touch alcohol at all. It was 3 or 4 years ago I watched Tyson Fury taking Sky round his caravan and telling them how every morning he likes to sit down to a full-English breakfast.
Don't give it to me with your arrogant crap that a trained Bolt couldn't compete in a boxing match - I keep saying trained - can you read? Usain Bolt is a vastly, vastly superior physical specimen to Tyson full-English breakfast Fury, so lay off it with the pompous horsesh*t Mr Expert.
And I'd like to reiterate also, I do like Fury and hoped he would beat that other arrogant person, David Haye. Get your high horse you idiot.

You're barking up the wrong tree if you think a man who has never boxed before, regardless of athletic ability, could give a world class boxer a "good fight" with only 6 months training in boxing. Give over mate. You're massively underestimating the "skill" and "technique" required in boxing that takes years to acquire.n1ebf wrote:Rubbish. Yes, that's essentially exactly what everyone is telling you. You're trying to simplify something that contains a huge number of variables and you're ignoring all historical precedent.n1ebf wrote:okay, is anybody on this thread saying that a non-contact athlete can't learn to box and compete with a contact athlete?

Look what happened when a 'super-fit' Olympian had a white collar bout against another sportsman who'd clearly had some basic amateur training:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=No_z9NyIf8s
I'm sure the Olympian had all the advantages in terms of fitness, strength etc, but the limited opponent who wouldn't last seconds with Fury dispatched him with ease.
Re: Tyson Fury enjoyed his selection box over Crimbo
Nah. That's a poor example just because certain athletes doing it doesn’t make it right. You shouldn’t be going into camp having to shed a load of weight for the first 6 weeks. It’s rubbish. Hatton used to do it, and by his own admission it did him no favours. Peaking is obviously important but having a good fitness base before a camp and being in decent shape is essential.Aden wrote:If you try and stay in fighting shape all year round, you'll never come close to your potential and you'll be far more susceptible to injuries. Plenty of NFL and NBA guys get fat in the off-season and cyclists like Bernard Hinault, Miguel Indurain and Jan Ulrich would tip-up at the start of a training block looking obese. We live in a culture where image is sold as everything, but that doesn't mean image actually is everything. Fighters boxing twice a year should peak on two days each year.
Sure take a week or two off every now and then and let your body recharge but there is not excuse for an athlete to get that badly out of shape. Froch is a prime example of someone who stays fit all year round. It’s a healthy attitude and one that has no doubt contributed to the longevity of his career. Countless others have too – mayweather!

'fit' but not 'fighting shape'. fighting shape is too much of a peak to mantain year-round

Re: Tyson Fury enjoyed his selection box over Crimbo
absolutely. Getting in fighting shape is peak. Using a 10-12 week camp to get to that point of peaking and being in the best possible condition. In boxing, its a condition that isn't sustainable (weight governed etc).Counter-puncher wrote:'fit' but not 'fighting shape'. fighting shape is too much of a peak to mantain year-round
