Where has all this talk of a Gatti fight come from?

Post by states »

Because I, as a huge fan of Hatton, will be massively disappointed if that's the fight we're looking at next year. 2 years ago, yes: Gatti will always be a big money fight, but Mayweather has shown, once again, that Thunder is a level short of top-class, and Hatton, in beating Tszyu, has shown that he should be fighting guys a level above Gatti.

I sincerely hope Ian Darke is talking shite, because I'll lose a lot of respect for Hatton if it turns out he's looking for Gatti next.

I disagree to be honest, I would look forward to this although personally I doubt it happens. Gatti is now focusing on a Welterweight career.

I disagree with your scenerio..... Mayweather is a bit special, I think he does a demolition job to anybody in the devision (sorry). That includes both Hatton AND Tszyu.

While Tszyu was an incredible fighter, he was 35 and only had a few rounds in 2-3 years. Styles makes fights, and I give Gatti a real chance in this one.

Gatti couldn't hit Mayweather, he couldn't get passed that master defence. He won't have such a problem with Hatton. Their workrate is comparable, their handspeed is comparable, their power is comparable.

Hatton's best win vs Tszyu a great night, but even Ricky will admit it wasn't the most "fluid" of performance. He knew how to beat Tszyu, but adopted a style which was very similar to Micky Ward. Little movement, just focusing on pressure, pressure, pressure and working all the time. Gatti had the better of Ward.

I'd be pleased if it happend next, Gatti is still an elite fighter - only Mayweather really much better than him. With all the vulnerabilities he has been showing, do you think Gatti doesn't stand a chance vs Cotto? Gatti is still ranked probably 3-4 in the devision and would definately start as favourite vs Maussa.

Stu, my point is this: Mayweather has proved that he's truly exceptional. Hatton has shown that he can beat one of the greats. The obvious fight, surely, is one against the other? You have to agree that Hatton against Gatti is a step back? He's just beaten someone who is well above that level. And even if you disagree with that, Hatton is now compared with Mayweather, so Hatton-Gatti will be considered a regression ,surely?

And I have to disagree with you: Gatti is NOT an elite fighter. Nobody who loses to Mickey Ward is an Elite fighter, no matter how brave they are.

Agree and disagree with Stu - Hatton has faster hands, better workrate and better movement and defense and brain than Gatti. Gatti hits harder though and I think we'd get a top notch toe-toe afair. Gatti has some chance.

Gatti is underated - 2 weight belt holder - Gatti blew away Ruelas, Leija, Dorin (lightweight champ)

Hamed-Gatti would of been a decent scrap in 96 - I think it would of been a match-up Hamed would of excelled in but would be an exciting fight

Can see what you mean, but its ONLY Mayweather who you can say is n the Tszyu level, Cotto is on the Gatti level (at the moment), the rest are below it. The devision hasn't got a lot of depth to it and if Mayweather does move up then, at this present moment, Gatti vs Hatton is THE main 140 fight. I think a winner of a potential Witter vs Cotto bout would then have an arguement, but they really need to fight each other to get onto that level.

As for the Gatti vs Ward trilogy, I thought it was 3-0 to Gatti and the second fight he pretty much won by a shut out, the third he won with one hand. Can't a fighter be allowed to learn from their mistakes, Gatti certainly did for the rematch.

As for the Gatti vs Hatton comparisons, I agree Hatton has the better Brain, better punch resistance and better mileage on the clock. However, if I had to give an edge in Power, Handspeed and Footwork then I would give that edge to Gatti.

Gatti is through and shouldn't really be fighting anymore imo... if Ricky takes him on next then it is a soft touch, how can anyone say different?... what will a win against Gatti prove?... nothing.... the fight will not even be competitive.....

Hatton/Gatti would be piss poor - he's 10/1 to win tonight and should be looking for a decent fight next time out. Not a contest against a washed up Gatti.

It'd be a fight where everyone knows the outcome before it happens - I'd never pay up to see that one.

While I seriously doubt it'll be either Floyd or Cotto next up, he should at least be figting someone with more of a chance than Gatti. Vivian Harris would be much better, and dangerous, if he gets a comeback win under his belt.

Or dare I say it..................Witter.

I wasn't impressed when Sky started banding Gatti around. I would prefer Ricky in with the 20 somethings not the 30 somethings...but I suppose he has always wanted to fight Gatti and it would be good experience for his first major American fight if they can decide on Welter or Light Welter.

And thinking about it when Naz got his big launch in America Kevin Kelley was just a faded ex-champion ready to be rolled over :box:

Gatti should be kept as back up plan should Hatton lose to Mayweather.

It could prove a bigger sell then the Floyd fight even directly following a loss.

The dream plan for me is Cotto in spring, Mayweather in the summer.

If Ricky loses then either rematch or fight Gatti. If he wins move up to Welter perhaps taking on Castillo first.

Ricky doesn't seem to like fighting anyone under 35!... even Maussa is 34. Witter is still a bit too young I suppose!... :x

Witter maybe, but Harris was awful vs Maussa... and it wasn't as if he was looking particularly amazing before that - struggled with an aging Urkal.

Mayweather will make everyone look stupid.

Are you seriously suggesting that Gatti has less of a chance than Maussa?

He was talking tonight about taking on the best in the world and then they throw out a name who was dismantled by one of the genuine best in the world. Hatton should look for Cotto or Castillo next since a Mayweather fight seems unlikely anytime soon.

Mayweather hasn't proved a thing since 2002 when he fought Castillo...

I think Hatton vs Gatti is a horrible idea for a number of reasons.

(1) By all accounts Gatti has recently been killing himself to make 140lbs and was eating baby food for a week prior to the Mayweather Jr fight in a effort to make the weight. If this is true it could be very dangerous putting a shopworn Gatti in with a young Lion like Hatton at 140lbs.

(2) Anyone here heard Gatti speak recently? His speech patterns are definatley starting to change. So does he really need a beating at the hands of Hatton after such a long tough career?

(3) The guy has just taken a one sided beating off Mayweather Jr how does this justify a straight shot at Hattons and his Titles? Just because Gatti is big box office and exciting doesn't excuse this, or does it? Smell of blood money to me.

(4) How will Hattons reputation be enhanced by feasting on the battered and bloodied leftovers of Mayweather Jr?

Sure this fight has the potential of being exciting for a few rounds but at what cost? Hatton has little to gain (aside from ££££'s) but Gatti has a LOT to lose.

I do agree with a number of points you make, and I for one don't think it will happen because of your first point.

As for point 3 - well he is signed to fight Damnguard in January. I think we would have assess his effort there to answer your point 2.

Point 4 I also agree with, but if its not going to be Mayweather, then who else. Cotto isn't on that level yet, Castillo? Maybe but he has probably going to be busy with Corrales again soon. Freitas?

Hatton v Gatti is a horrible prospect, Cotto has to be his next fight or many fans will start to lose interest - Hopefully Mayweather in around a years time although this one might be where Hatton gets his first loss - Love to see him floor Witter but we all know that isnt going to come off, not enough money in that matchup - Anyway I think Witter isnt up to the very best on recent showings and taking on Witter would be a step backwards - Hatton worried me with his lack of defence but he did prove yet again he can take a decent punch and can certainly dish them out! Surely the Americans who underated Hatton are now realising how special he is, we already knew that - Ricky is going to be a boxing legend and a win against Mayweather or Costillo would definately make him top dog

Gatti makes sense as a box office profiler before taking on someone like Mayweather, but as a meaningful fight it's not really an option, only as a prelude to something else.

People would only compare Hattons performance against gattis to Mayweathers! Lets face it, he wont match it either!

I really hope it doesn't happen, Hatton will lose a lot of credibility fighting a guy Mayweather just gave such a pasting to.
