Re: Pernell Whitaker Versus
I think he beats Cuevas, but in all honesty, I have not seen Pipino Cuevas at his best.
I think that Whitaker is out of his depth against the rest. Not to say he would not stand a chance, but it's asking too much of him at WW. Apart from Breland, impressive dimensions but never proved himself in the level of the othr guys.
This is my head speaking.
My heart tells me that Sweatpea was cute enough to earn a win against anyone on his best day.

Re: Pernell Whitaker Versus
I think Hearns would be one of the few guys from Whitaker's weight neighborhood that I'd pick to stop Whitaker. Sometime late in the fight I think Hearns' power and boxing skill prove too much for the much shorter and outgunned Whitaker. I'd say Hearns by KO 9 or 10.
I think Leonard wins a Unanimous decision.
Sweet Pea outboxes Cuevas and takes a UD
Sweet Pea outboxes Breland and takes a UD
Sweet Pea vs Benitez could go either way depending on which Benitez shows up...I'd lean towards Whitaker to take a Split Decision, but I could see this one going either way.

Re: Pernell Whitaker Versus
Leonard and Whitaker are in the same class as fighters....but Whitaker is the smaller man.....so go with the bigger guy there.
The rest.....he wins.....or at least it's his to lose. Even Benitez.....what a fight that would be.

Re: Pernell Whitaker Versus
I think Hearns would be a nightmare for him personally. I don't see him winning that one at all. I think he has a better chance of beating Leonard than he does Hearns, but I don't think he'd beat Sugar Ray either.BoxBuzz wrote:Leonard and Whitaker are in the same class as fighters....but Whitaker is the smaller man.....so go with the bigger guy there.

Re: Pernell Whitaker Versus
Didnt see Hearns on the list.....Hearns just seems way too big.
However.....Pernell could piss him off, and I don't think Hearns is going to KO Whitaker....so every second that they spend in the ring together, Hearns gets more and more pissed.....he could blow it.
I can't think of a more incompatible pair of personalities. Whitaker would stay cool. and maybe just have us all on his side and laughing at Hearns. Even if Hearns wins the decision. All he has to do is keep Hearns from looking good, and he wins a psyche battle. I can't imagine Whitaker winning the decision, but he could walk away in a good mood.......Hearns won't walk away happy...even if he wins.

Re: Pernell Whitaker Versus
Whitaker is my favorite fighter, but he loses 10/10 to Hearns.
Whitaker/Benitez is a very close call. I may favor Whitaker very narrowly on the strength of his superior jab and workrate.
He loses to Leonard and decisions the other two. Breland would actually make for an interesting fight, just based on which tactic Whitaker chooses to impose.

Re: Pernell Whitaker Versus
vlad......IF Tommy could KO Whitaker...it would be early....the later rounds won't be kind to Tommy in this case.
I'm not saying who wins this, but Tommy does seem a bridge to far for Pernell, but I don't doubt Pernell will be standing...and with a shot at the decision. Albeit less than a 50/50 shot.

Re: Pernell Whitaker Versus
Hearns decisions Pea, but Whitaker's underrated body work would make it interesting late.
I think Whitaker is 50/50 with benitez & about 40/60 with leonard. Close decisions.
He beats Cuevas soundly and Breland a bit trickier.

Re: Pernell Whitaker Versus
I can't see Hearns losing to a boxer. He wins this in a clear fashion.
Leonard wins clearly too.
Benitez is 50-50.
Pernell should beat Breland and Cuevas.

Re: Pernell Whitaker Versus
The great Pernell "Sweet Pea" Whitaker vs
Thomas Hearns: Hearns physical advantages would be HUGE in this fight. I don't see Hearns stopping Sweet Pea, but wins by UD.
Sugar Ray Leonard: Another fight like Leonard vs Benitez. This time Sugar Ray gets the nod by UD.
Pipino Cuevas: It would be hard for Pipino to find him. A boxing lesson from the master Whitaker by UD.
Wilfred Benitez: I don't like Benitez, but I favour him in this fight. Benitez by UD. Benitez at his best, was very good.
Mark Breland: I don't think this guy was good to begin with. Whitaker by UD. Another boxing lesson.

Re: Pernell Whitaker Versus
Nobody outboxes Hearns, not even Pea, with that sort of height advantage. The shot that took out the greatest lightweight of all would put paid to Pernell too, but Hearns only lands it if Pea is still trying to win late on, which I don't see. If find the Leonard fight very interesting; fascinating to see how he would deal with someone that elusive.

There a particular reason for this pick? Not saying Whitaker should be heavily favored or anything, just found it interesting, seeing as you don't seem to think highly of Benitez and do seem to think highly of Pete.

Re: Pernell Whitaker Versus
Everyone is quick to write off Cuevas, but if you watch Whittaker v Gary Jacobs, who isn't even a UK great by any means, he chased Sweet Pea down quite effectively for 6 rounds, before his stamina gave out a little.

Re: Pernell Whitaker Versus
I would say that Jacobs' feet were as good as Cuevas', if not better. What he didn't have was that wall-flattener of a left hook.

Re: Pernell Whitaker Versus
Nobody ever out-boxed Hearns in his career, much less in his prime.
