UK TV - Mikey Garcia v Burgos

Post by ScottDetonator »

Will the Mikey Garcia v Juan Carlos Burgos card be shown anywhere on UK TV this Saturday night/Sunday morning? A decent under-card that's better than the fight card that BN are showing with Lamont Peterson v Dierry Jean.

Mikey has talent to burn and is definitely one to watch this year. A shame to have good cards going against each other after the weeks we've had of nothing.

Garcia vs Burgos is a must-watch, for me. I think a body of water with a current, confined between banks, is the likeliest option though mate...

seems like people are already anointing him the next great fighter.

always dangerous.

recall ring online raising his name in debate for pound for pound ranking (potential) and fighter of the year. preposterous.

doesn't he have a "broner-escobedo win" from not making the weight? in other words he's too big for his opponents - see what happens when he settles into higher weight, then be wary.

Fvck the Ring & their stupid rankings.

Yes to the outweighing thing--that win over JuanMa was shite, tbh, Lopez looked like he'd left it all in the ring in those two fights with Salido (getting punched flush by everyone he ever fought probably didn't help, either). He's deffo a big drainer, the Roberto Garcia camp is stuffed with them--Margarito, Rios etc etc etc.

& the knockdown vs Martinez proved he's human. But he got up & finished Martinez, which no-one's done before.

He's a great offensive talent, we'll see where he goes from here. I think he's on the level of an Abner Mares, meself: the Yanks have anointed him 'cos they need a big star, but whilst obviously world-class he'll pick up a few losses in between snatching various championships.

The Burgos fight will be a war, though. & if he comes through, get him in the ring with Uchiyama before he retires. I'm quite certain Takashi Miura would fancy swinging that big overhand left at his face, as well.

I wander if they are drainers as such or just not the best when it comes to the prep, don't start camp earlier enough etc. Rios never looked cut at Lightweight.

Oh yeah it was definitely his silky skills & precision footwork that got Rios all those wins at lightweight, rather than say being far bigger & stronger than the poor fvcks he was walking through.

& what further supports this contention is his massive success since moving up in weight--good job he wasn't just relying on putting twenty pounds back on overnight, or he might have come unstuck against someone pretty ordinary but as big as him!

So, yeah, I totally agree that it was just a happy accident. Totally. Exactly that. How fortuitous.

Datsue - you misread my post massively there.

I'm just wondering if he was a lazy so and so and not done the weight properly as he never looked cut at Lightweight. If I fasted for 4 days I could make light Middle and then put most of the weight back through rehydration to be weighing in the Super Middleweight division come fight night. But if I trained properly and dieted properly for 3 months I could make Lightweight comfortably enough.

What I am saying is there can sometimes be a difference between a drainer and someone who is massive for the weight. As said currently, I would have to drain like hell to make light middle..... I would be tiny for the weight though, even though when rehydrated I would be 12 stone.... that's cause I don't train.

He actually looked out of shape against Pacquiao.

yes, any mex-american with offensive skills and a bit of facial hair is the next duran (of panama, nonetheless). takes me back to canizales, who - if I'm being honest - looked great in 2 fights (seabrooks) & the rest of his reign a bit of a one trick pony (zig-punch-zag, and so on...) with bad nerves, disappointing when he moved up and fought better opponents (Vazquez sr and jr jones outboxing and outgunning him).

carbajal, little hands of stone, with the amazing win over gonzalez, a rivalry that quickly petered out.

probably forgotten a few, as well.

the weight draining doesn't sound promising. looking at Brandon rios, he really does not have the physique of a top athlete and hasn't for a long time, fleshy and sluggish. considering names like cotto & DLH, I feel all that early career draining affected their stamina later on, making them 8 round fighters. they hurt their bodies and if they cannot walk through an opponent, suffer the 12 rds.

Garcia still has a long way to go of course, p4p? hardly

but he does have fantastic skill and great potential

Burgos did get robbed vs Martinez, but he did not look good against Amidu at superfeather, getting a draw, (I thought he lost IIRC) and I see Garcia stopping him easier than he did Martinez

You know mate, I hadn't seen the Amidu fight until you said, & you are correct: Burgos looked bloody dreadful there.

Garcia mid/late stoppage then.

Thanks for the heads-up mate.

Talking about Japanese Super Featherweights, I'd love to have seen Garcia v Daiki Kaneko. Kaneko looks like the "next guy" in the division and he gave Uchi a much closer bout than the scores suggest. Unfortunately I think Uchi is at the end of the line and will lose in the mooted Miura rematch.

Burgos/Amidu was at Lightweight not Super Featherweight and if I remember correctly Amidu was a VERY late replacement opponent for Daulis Prescott, a BIG change in opponent there.

^ I accept that mate, but JCB looked to have technically regressed; his punches were even wider, slower & sloppier & his head movement was non-existent. The gaps when he punched were Grand Canyon-esque & the overhand right had something of the Eubank cricket-bowler thing to it at times.

I don't see how a change of opponent makes your defence worse unless you're physically slipping, meself.

But we'll see tonight...
