If Mike Tyson hadn't gone to jail 1991 - 1994

Post by BOXINGBARMY1 »

OK, its June 1991 and Tyson has just beat Razor Ruddock. Tyson goes out partying for a few weeks and NEVER meets Desiree Washington, then Don King announces the Holyfield fight for Nov 8.
Tyson trains at Johnny Toccos in Las Vegas with Richie Giachetti. What would have happened in the Holyfield bout ?
I think a 1991 Tyson beats Holyfield inside the distance.
Then what for Tyson:

JUNE 1992 TYSON v FOREMAN
APRIL 1993 TYSON v BOWE
NOV 1993 TYSON v LEWIS
MAY 1994 TYSON v MOORER

All Las Vegas super events. (Tyson wins each fight in my opinion.) :bag:

I think Tyson may well have beaten Holyfield at that point, he was a far better fighter then, than the version who fought Holyfield.

I think Bowe would have beaten Tyson, he had the inside game to hurt Tyson, and as he went on to prove against Golota, was a very very tough man.

Tyson was scared as hell of Foreman - he had a huge row with his advisors when they suggested he fight Foreman. I'm not sure what would have happened had they fought, Tyson was definitely spooked by the prospect of fighting big George, I have a feeling he would never have taken the fight.

Moorer - Tyson would have smashed him to pieces.

Hard to predict really as Tyson seemed to train hard for some fights but not others depending on his mood or state of mind.
By his own admission he did not train properly for the first Holyfield fight but did for the second one.

By then the bubble had already burst and he had lost to Buster Douglas.

The myth / legend had gone, not only for opponents but also for Tyson himself.

I also believe that something was always going to happen, his lifestyle up to that point would indicate that something would go badly wrong sooner or later.

Even if he hadnt met Washington his career was all over the place anyway. Something else would have happened at some poin t around that time. Yes he would have had fights as you suggest but its anyone guess how they would have gone as tyosn hardly ever trained, he was sick of the fight game not long after the death of Cus. Had Cus been younger, Tyson would have been the best heavyweight ever!

He would have got frustrated against holy and bit his nose off. He then ends up in prison in 92 for something else and takes a similar path.

He would not have got past Evander Holyfield in 1991, in my opinion.

The Evander Holyfield who went to war with the giant & totally complete 1992 Riddick Bowe can crush the one-dimensional Mike Tyson of the Razor Ruddock fights. Tyson was a bad boy. Holyfield was a bad man.

Tyson would always have gone off the rails, even if cus had lived. He couldn't cope with all the distractions and temptations that fame and wealth brought him, and in the end, he would have rebelled against Cus' dictatorial style of management, and gone his own way.

Tyson was always going to implode at some point.

IMO Holyfield would always have had Tyson's number. Tyson just couldn't get into Holyfield's psyche & intimidate him. They'd known each other since their teens and sparred together quite a lot before reaching fame and by all accounts Evander always knew how to deal with Tyson's bully like persona from the start.

Moorer would have been destroyed, and Foreman would have basically been beaten up. I think a younger Tyson could have just eked a points win over Holyfield in a war. Lewis I don't know. I generally think the pre McCall version would have lost to Bowe. Got to fancy Tyson to find the target.

absolutely. he would've self destructed and the wheels already had come off vs douglas. could've suffered burn out after 2 scrappy but very physical fights with "razor" Ruddock.

but, maybe, there'd have been a holyfield-tyson series, anything could've happened given how careless heavyweight boxing was during these times (holy almost stopped by bert cooper, beaten by moorer, moorer stopped by foreman when easily in control, lewis, fighting with such a cavalier attitude vs oliver McCall...) in the early-mid 90s and bowe could well have been stuck at the back of the queue. so maybe boxing would've missed one of its greatest rivalries, bowe vs holyfield. or at least it would've been diminished.

im reading tysons book the now and to me the way he talks about Partying hard between fights and describes a few of the early fights that he was hurt by body shots ect and went into fight less than 100% that maybe he couldve been taken out by someone like holyfield over a long distcane

maybe tysons just trying to play himself down for the book and of course he was fericous at that time.

i was always under the impression he just partied hard just before the rape case and when he came back out but seems hes always liked to get high or Drink to excess even as an amateur

still he was a machine in there and in his youth probably be too much for Evander

Holyfield beats Tyson at any stage of their pro careers. Holy was considered more shopworn than Mke when they did fight. It's poor revisionism to suggest otherwise. Holyfield would have out boxed and out fought him in 91. Tyson couldn't hurt him, wasn't as physically strong and would have struggled with Holyfields speed in 91.

Definnitely food for thought in each opinion.

Its very hard to say, holyfield would got rocked by bert cooper at that point if i remember and tyson hits alot harder than bert cooper. Lewis of 92 was abit more gung ho than with stewart, moorer would of got knocked out foreman was too lazy in a fight and i think tyson would of outpointed him.

Yes, people often don't realise that Cus was far from Angelic, in his own way he used Mike just as much as the other people in his life. He was a paranoic, controlling and manipulative old man, who saw in Mike his ticket to everlasting fame. He'd been looking for a small, fast heavyweight since he handled Floyd Patterson.

Patterson had grown tired of fighting using Cus' 'system' because it took away the intuitive nature of the bout, and relied on countless hours of practising set routines - with numbers called out to represent chains of combinations.

Ultimately Patterson had enough, and Tyson would have done also - Cus dominated his fighters, and forced them into a highly effective but ultimately robotic and unfulfilling style of fighting.

I love Tyson, a sensational fighter but look what Douglas and Ruddock were able to achieve by just fighting back- he never got up from a knockdown to win. He showed his lack of competitiveness time and again.

He was a great on top fighter but the likes of Lewis, Holyfield and Bowe would have represented real danger to him even without his off time.

Thought bowe and Tyson have both been quoted in the past saying they would never have fought as they had been childhood friends growing up in Brooklyn? Could be wrong though????

good point. mike wasn't able to use his imagination. if he'd kept on doing the same thing, with rooney, it would've eventually gone wrong. his mind or his body would've rebelled. it looked great for a couple of years in Tyson's physical prime but all things change. sadly it wasn't until freddy roach got hold of Tyson, that Tyson was showing imaginative & fluid combinations...and then it was too late because his leg "went" vs danny Williams.

you're right, it's not like Tyson could "simply" continue to roll under then blast out everyone with his right to the body, right uppercut combination. he would never have been able to sustain; but let's say he did, he kept winning, stayed on top of his personal life - he'd've encountered top class "super heavyweights" earlier on, and something likely would've gone wrong vs a lewis or bowe.

I don't he ever would have beaten Holyfield, Holy was faster, more intelligent and more devious devious than any of Tysons previous opponents, not to mention mentally stronger than Mike himself.

Tyson vs Foreman, I'd give to Mike, George while still a big hitter was too slow to bother Mike at this point.

Tyson vs Bowe, depends on which Bowe turns up, Bowe at his best wins on points/later rounds stoppage.

Tyson vs Lewis, Tyson, Lennox was still rough around the edges although he would certainly have had a chance.

Tyson vs Moorer, Moorer could have been awkward for Mike but ultimately Mike would have had too much for Moorer.

In defence of Tyson, he encountered one of these top class super heavyweights in Tony Tucker. And TNT had a much, much better chin than either Lewis or Bowe. Tyson I thought was sensational in using timing to outjab a 6'5'' beast who was himself very durable and very fast.

Very big targets, Lewis and Bowe, and not as fast as Mike Tyson. Bad recipe. 'Potentially'.
