Would Hatton v Mayweather actually be a good fight?
Would Hatton v Mayweather actually be a good fight?
The more I consider it the less I think so. I believe Hatton would be hitting thin air and shoulders all night, and I don't think his pressure would wear Floyd down in the second half, who always fights at a pretty intense pace himself. I think Ricky would end up on the wrong end of a disappointing unamimous decision.
Certainly after Saturdays performance I don't believe Mayweather would even consider that he could lose to Hatton, while I wouldn't be so sure the other way around.
Far better matches IMO would be Hatton v Castillo and Mayweather v Cotto.

Have to say, seeing him against Maussa, I do wonder how much hope he would have against Mayweather. Maussa was able to pull back away from Hatton's punches with ease at times, and his defence is lousy.
Mayweather is a defensive genius, and I can see Hatton getting very very frustrated fighting someone as elusive as Mayweather, and taking some serious punishment when he tries to get close.

I think Mayweather would hand our Hatton a bit of a boxing lesson if he fights the way he did against Maussa and Tszyu. Personally though, I can not see the fight happening as I dont think Mayweather will fight at 140 again! I said it on the current scene and I will say it on here, the biggest and most entertaining fight at 140 will be Hatton/Castillo next year, forget about Gatti!

Who beats who to the punch? Who has the fastest feet? Can Hatton close the gap? Can Hatton force Mayweather to the ropes? Can Mayweather slip bodypunches that are thrown in bunches? Can Hatton finnish Mayweather in 1 round after been outboxed all night? HOW WILL HATTON FIGHT A SLICK YOUNG COMBINATION THROWING FIGHTER (NEVER FOUGHT ANYONE LIKE MAYWEATHER or any slick boxer for that manner)? I'm not sure on all these questions although I lean to a Mayweather as a 65% chance of winning
Also Hatton would be better than he was against Maussa - he'd train harder for this 1.

Castillo and Corrales arguably hit harder. Castillo arguably has a better chin than Ricky. Mitchell and Corley are faster than Ricky. Ricky may be the best overall challeneg Mayweather has faced but hes not seeing anything he hasn't seen before.KO Atrist wrote:Hatton is stronger, quicker and hits harder than anyone Mayweather has ever faced.

Mayweather will not hurt Hatton.
Ricky might lose the first 6 rounds but by the 8th Hatton will be on top with a stoppage around the 10th.
Mayweather can't hurt Hatton when he could hurt Gatti etc quite allot? You've over simplified the fight - the fights would be all about workrate, speed, strategies - Ricky needs to win rounds from the offset. He would need to goto the body allot and continually pressure PBF round after round. If PBF wins the first 6rounds he'll win easy because he won't tire - he spars 15miniute rounds afterall.
Hatton hits much harder than all of the fighters you mentioned above. He is miles stronger as well.Phenomenal-Nutrition wrote:Castillo and Corrales arguably hit harder. Not so sure about that. Castillo is a fornicating huge lightweight and has fought at Welterweight before. He also has heavier hands than Hatton for my money.
Corralles definetly hits harder than Hatton, he sent the iron chinned Castillo's eyes into orbit with one punch. He isn't as strong, nor does he carry a shot as well, but he hits significantly harder.
In theory anyway, Mayweather could win the fight without ever taking much punishment at all, not hard to envisage/

Even if Hatton were a serious banger at world level, which I don't believe he is, I don't see how that would be enough against Mayweather. It's his style that's the problem, he'd land about 1 punch in every 10 thrown and most of those would be glancing I suspect. You need more than that to take rounds off Mayweather and I just don't think Ricky has it in him despite all the effort he would bring.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought Corrales stopped him on the ropes.jamesmcdonnell wrote:How do you figure that?
How many people has Hatton stopped cleanly in his career? It's almost always been an accumulation of shots.
Corralles iced Castillo with one shot after being decked twice heavily, now that is punching power.
Hatton is stronger, but he's not a KO puncher.
Mercer stopped Morrison on the ropes!!!!!KO Atrist wrote:Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought Corrales stopped him on the ropes.jamesmcdonnell wrote:How do you figure that?

Castillo and Morrison were both "gone", more so that many fighters who get stopped on all fours
The weight difference means its a little difficult to compare... but Corrales has always been regarded as a puncher... dropping and stopping people with one shot.
Hatton has never done that before (to the head) until the weekend.

Corralles looks to be hitting harder since moving up in weight if anything and you would hardly call Castillo glass jawed.
The fight was stopped because Castillo was utterly helpless on the ropes. He would have gotten decapitated if the fight had been allowed to go on. Just because he didn't go down doesn't mean he should have been allowed to continue.

Like I said, Hatton was always going to struggle to get "up" for a guy like Maussa - let's face it, one of the worst title holders we've seen in awhile.
But for someone like Floyd....no problem there. And I reckon his game plan has to be along the lines of someone like Marciano: hammer those arms and shoulders till they come down late on, plus the body. Forget about that chin till round 9, 10...
Floyd doesn't look built to take real punishment at 140. He's so damn cocky he'll be dropping his hands to slug it out at times too - and I don;t think he can hurt Hatton somehow.
Sure, he's maybe the best fighter we've seen in 20+ years - but I'm starting to think he's in the wrong weight division for Hatton...
A few months ago, I was thinking Mayweather all the way....not so sure about that now.
After the Tszyu fight, Graham and Hatton have proved they know how to read a fighter very well.

Hatton would have to hit a heck of a lot of shoulder and arm to get Mayweather's hands down, I don't even think he'd have much success doing that.
As strong and experienced as Kostya Tszyu was he was flat footed and there to be hit, if you were prepared to take a few yourself. Mayweather is the complete opposite. I just can't see how he'd allow Hatton to land forceful blows with any kind of regularity. If he won any less than 8 of the 12 rounds clearly, I'd be surprised.

Would probably depend on where it took place... but more than that, it also depends what you mean by 'good': if he won I think he'd do it ugly, if he lost it would mostly be lop-sided. I guess my final answer would be 'no' - a good win for either man (particularly Ricky), not a good fight in itself either way, unfortunately.
