It serves Groves right for wanting a say in his career and who he wants to work with in the future?

Jim,

Am I reading this wrong or missing something? 15% of £1,000,000 is £150,000. 25% is £250,000. That's a difference of £100,000.

Or did you mean something else?

I'd love to know the details of the 'seven figure offer'. Was it over £1,000,000 for the rematch or that amount when you include his next bout/bouts?

It might seem like Groves has shot himself in the foot but this should end up better for him if he's able to beat Froch in a rematch.

On the other hand, Hearn is the top promoter in the UK at the moment so it's likely Groves will be fighting for him somewhere along the line.

Hearn is the top promoter in the UK at the moment but Warren has links with Golden Boy and continental promoters; whoever Groves chooses to go with will get him shown regularly in the UK - if he can bargain a better deal for himself, why not?

If Groves doesn't get himself a bigger slice of the pie then Froch and Hearn (already very wealthy men) will get more; Eddie won't pay more out for a quality undercard - does that make Groves greedy or are Froch and Hearn greedy?

Groves isn't being greedy, he just wants his fair share of the money that the rematch will make.

Groves deserves a lot more than 15%.

You've got me doubting myself there, let me see what I was thinking.... (it seemed to make sense at the time!!)

The proposed purse was 7 digits, so lets say it was a million quid. They suggested it was more but let's round it to the nearest million.

What the total purses (ie, both) was, we don't know. They didn't say.

What they did say was that Groves was offered 7 digits and that it represented about 25%.

Then with the IBF rule coming into play and negotiations going as they have, he's not getting offered 25%, he is being offered 15%.

So if 25% was a million quid, 15% must be six hundred grand. The reduction is 40%.

In other words, George getting 25% meant a million, so if the total combined purse is the same but George can only have 15%, the difference has cost him 400k.

If he can't negotiate a fair deal then he should go after another world champ instead.

Groves doesn't need Froch.

I'd rather see Froch v Groves II than Stieglitz v Groves.
But hey maybe that's just me.

I'd like to see both.

It doesn't matter which fight is better. Groves deserves a good slice of the money for either fight.

Is there any direct evidence to support the notion that George is crying himself to sleep over this 15% ?

Yes, he has challenged the IBF ruling. Of course he would, there is a fair argument for doing so. The verdict hasn't gone his way but there was big money at stake so it makes sense to challenge it. If he wins the appeal, brilliant. If he loses, he is only back where he started. The main thing is he's not signing options and that was clearly the priority for him.

If things proceed in line with the general pre-world cup timeline, George may well dethrone Froch before June. He'll be the IBF champ and also hold the WBA strap, he'll have set the record straight, got his revenge, and won't be tied down to anyone. There is the rest of the year ahead of him, and years more to come - he only turns 26 in March.

I could imagine all this fuss if it was Audley Harrison holding out for one final payday at 43, but George has the world at his feet.

If there are any boxrec members who would be happy at 15% of a £4-£5 million quid total purse, speak up so we can hear you !

Rematch with a fair split of the money. 15% is clearly not enough.

Froch still looks bad.

Why isn't 15% enough? Just out of interest. Why should the challenger receive anymore?

The champion deserves the lion share. What happens if Kell Brook becomes Mayweather's mandatory at some stage. Do you think Brook deserves 50% of the purse?

The most important thing should be that Groves can fight for the title without having to sign away his immediate future. He has got that. I now don't see what the problem is.

Because he brings more than 15% worth of attention to the table. He played a huge part in the first bout been so entertaining.

OK HORSE,

Let me answer your comment, not with my own words - but with the words of Groves trainer:

“He isn’t chasing Carl Froch for a pay day, he is chasing the rematch and Carl Froch just happens to be the opponent.

“We are not getting carried away with anything or thinking George is about to be world champion. But we now have the rematch which is what we went to the IBF to get.”
