Do Brits Overlook the EBU Title? Lonsdale more important?
Do Brits Overlook the EBU Title? Lonsdale more important?
We currently have only have 1 European Champion in Del Boy (Degale and Frampton were but now listed as vacant) which is poor considering the standard of British boxing and the the fact we have some top ranked lads in most divisions, do you think the EBU belt is often overlooked? It seems like all British boxers want the Lonsdale and some will try and win it out-right, but then often try to make the leap to the world scene. A good example would be Kell Brook, British champion, then fights half decent opposition then looks for world title, fair enough, but in that time he could have fought, and beat Bundu (who admittedly looks a good fighter) and added the EBU belt to his CV, challenging himself along the way.
Secondly, is the Lonsdale regarded is the most prestigious domestic belt in Europe? Not just because of it's history, but also due to the standard?

EBU has been devalued by all the crappy Intercontinental titles floating around.
They provide a solid base to boost your rankings with the alphabets and generally the quality of opposition can generally be ofa lower standard to an EBU ranked fighter.

DeGale vacated the EBU to concentrate on defending the WBC Silver.
Make of that what you will.

Oh sorry, I forgot we're not allowed to criticize any boxer who posts on here.
I don't have any titles but I still think it's hypocritical of Gavin to denounce a 'title' as 'crappy' considering he's won and defended one (and presumably got paid well for doing so) .[/quote]
To be fair, I agree with the comment that Gavin made but also agree with the above.
There are a couple of other factors :
What is the EBU position with regards to defences (particularly mandatories) - I am guessing that they may be stricter that the spurious inter-continental stuff ?
Also, I bet that the sanctioning fees for these are lower than the EBU.
So ..... a promoter goes with the inter-continental because it costs them less and they can pick and choose the opponents.

Which is exactly why they have no credibility.bripez wrote: So ..... a promoter goes with the inter-continental because it costs them less and they can pick and choose the opponents.

I agree with you, but there are a few of FW's boxers walking around posting on Facebook (and being reported in the press) that they are "European Champion" when in reality they are probably Area Title level at best.ILikeBeer wrote:Which is exactly why they have no credibility.bripez wrote: So ..... a promoter goes with the inter-continental because it costs them less and they can pick and choose the opponents.

U don't have to be aggressive, offensive and so confrontational in your post though, how many times have u had to do something u don't agree with in your job in order to earn your wage?Kearsley Maghull wrote: Oh sorry, I forgot we're not allowed to criticize any boxer who posts on here.

Its not like gavins ever banged on and on about what a privilege it is to hold that title, and its not like that's his only success
Do think its the fighters that get to pick and choose what titles they contest?
Re: Do Brits Overlook the EBU Title? Lonsdale more important?
I might be wrong...but I don't think that is Frankie Gavin you're having a pop at. Funnily enough Frankie posts as 'Frankie Gavin'.Kearsley Maghull wrote:Like the one you won against Mutley and (barely) defended against Woodhouse?funtime wrote:EBU has been devalued by all the crappy Intercontinental titles floating around

Re: Do Brits Overlook the EBU Title? Lonsdale more important?
I've got no doubt in my mind that some of the European title challengers that I've seen come over here would fail to win the British title........then again, others, the Kirakosyans and the Karmazins would conquer all before them. It's a bit of a lottery I think. I remember Michael Hunter fighting a guy from somewhere like Tajikistan or some place. That fight was over pretty quickly.

I've seen usernames of "funtime" and "Frankie Gavin" on here.....maybe he's got two? not sure.milpool wrote:I might be wrong...but I don't think that is Frankie Gavin you're having a pop at. Re: Do Brits Overlook the EBU Title? Lonsdale more important?
And defending his Lonsdale belt against Rendall Monroe, and I think off the top of my head it is the first time Monroe has challenged for it. Because I know he had the European title and put in a valiant effort for the WBC Super-Bantam against the Speed King Nishioka in Japan. And he had also two WBA 'interim' shots with Scott Quigg. But I don't seem to recall Monroe ever fighting for the British title.
Anyway I digress. It is a very important stepping stone enroute to major honours, down the line to the Euros and the Inter belts. The latter of which I just feel makes it easier to get the World title shot than defending European title about 3 or 4 times.

Re: Do Brits Overlook the EBU Title? Lonsdale more important?
i think that fighters that 25 years ago would of been fighting for the EBU belt guys like clinton mckenzie or pat barrett now fight for one of the many world titles instead of the EBU belt plus once you have that belt you may be pushed into a defence that the fighter didn't want where as the intercontinental belts don't seemed to have to defend against a top rated fighter rather anytime you fight it's an inter-con fight.
Re: Do Brits Overlook the EBU Title? Lonsdale more important?
I didn't see him slating a fighter for fighting for a title? It could be argues you are coming across Ike a tadgerKearsley Maghull wrote:'Funnily enough' you're coming across as a bit of an arrogant COCK, shut itmilpool wrote:Funnily enough

it comes down to the fact his promoter can't pick and choose.ILikeBeer wrote:DeGale vacated the EBU to concentrate on defending the WBC Silver.
Make of that what you will.
mick wants to make the matches for degale.
and not have the ebu tell him who to fight.
with the wbc silver belt u can make ya own matches and still stay on friendly terms with the wbc.
Re: Do Brits Overlook the EBU Title? Lonsdale more important?
thing is the EBU title was always good for getting a fighter into a World Title shot, with a few defences of it
Now a few defences of a intertatty titles , and you can easily move your fighter into the same position that a few EBU defences would have got you ... that is what is happening more and more .
