Those who decided Boxing was not for them

Post by Robert King »

Hi. Does anyone have a list somewhere of boxers who tried it once and then quit? E.g Just a career of a single bout. HAs this ever happened and, is so, how often?

Bound to be few that tried it and got permanently injured. And did not return.

Bert Cooper took around 90 seconds to convince Joe Savage to stick to streetfighting.

I know that if you look at Lamar Clark's record on boxrec there's a lot of guys there who had never fought before and never fought again.

Frederick Foreman aka 'Brown Bread Fred' (born 1932) boxed once as a pro, on an early Henry Cooper undercard.

Hopefully ex-England cricketer Freddie Flintoff. If you fancy a laugh it's on YouTube

I'd guess the number of fighters with a single bout is in the tens of thousands.

As usual, Saad is probably spot on with his estimate.

Last notable guy that I remember that had one fight and quit was Greek heavyweight Taz Titan. He obliterated a guy on USA about ten years ago with some fanfare and then got injured in a car accident and chose to quit right there and now.

Our very own Homicide_Henry got bashed senseless inside a minute and appears to have hung up the gloves for good.

-80's and early 90's Pro wrestler "Paul Roma" breifly tried Boxing.
-80's superstar Jets American Football Player "Mark Gastineu" tried Boxing, carear was breif.
-Supposadly,"Paul Wright" aka-"The Big Show" Pro Wrestler was persuing a boxing carear but quickly decided it wasnt for him after a particular sparring session.
-"Paul Anderson",The 1956 American Olympic Weightlifting champion and World Renowned Strongman attempted a Boxing Carear which didnt pan out due to his extreme fast twitch fibers which ran out of energy super duper rapidly.Much like that Mega Gigantic MMA fighter "Bob Sapp".
-I've also heard about some "Circus strongman"(I dont remember the name or opponent he fought) from WAY back, before Paul Anderson. He fought once or twice and it didnt pan out.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. There's almost certainly more of those guys than there is Champions in the sports history.
