Ricky Hatton: World fighter of the year 2005?

Post by MightyWarrior »

Unless Taylor bangs out Hop in 2 or 3 rounds next Sat, and considering he's thought lucky to get the first one by many, Ricky has to be favorite this year now - Ring magazine award at least.

First time for a born and bred UK fighter since....who? Don't think Honeyghan ever made it.....nor Benn, Minter etc....Buchanan even?

He's in with a decent shout, certainly.

Beat undisputed Tszyu to become champion at the weight and then unified, he seems a good bet certainly.

I think that if Taylor wins on points , they will give it too him. They like to give it to Americans

Using the excuse that Tzsyu was past his best and Maussa was overated. That is utter tripe.

Hmm, yes a possibility, think if Taylor beats Hop in the rematch emphatically he may get it.

Mayweather is going to be in with a shout as well for moving up and winning a title at LW.

He is a definite first ballot candidate for fighter of the year. I think it's between himself and Taylor, depending on the outcome of Saturday night. I can't even think of anybody else who could be in contention for it. Would they give it to Tarver for beating Johnson & Jones? I hope not. Would they give it to Lacy for keeping busy and having four victories in a 12 month period? I doubt it.

It will be a travesty if Mayweather wins it.

I know what you mean man... It's very frustrating... I've seen this question asked on another site, and the person who got the most votes for fighter of the year 2005' was Jose Luis Castillo.

I thought WHAT!!??!! - 1st Castillo got knocked out by Corrales, and then he failed to make the weight in the rematch... That doesn't sound like good form to me!

Totally agree. Although I think Mayweather is by far a better fighter than Hatton, the way Ricky took out the division's number 1 in Kosta Tzsyu was nothing short of phenominal - and showed that Hatton has real bottle.

Mayweather has a bit of Roy Jones about him. He likes to take the easier route. Mayweather has the flashy skills, but Hatton really stepped up to the plate and faced THE toughest challenge going at light-welter.

I'd say theres a few in the running. Surely Winkys in the hat - Mosley twice in 2004 then Tito in 2005 and Soliman next.

Floyd gave the most impressive exhibition of skills (now a 3 weight champ).

Judah beat Spinks and has looked good - doubt that'll be enough. Castillo, Corrales, Morales all had top wins but also lost. Raheem had 1 great win (very underated?) which won't be enough but showed brilliance

Toney beat Ruiz (don't know if that can be counted but he did) and Guinn - but they won't give it to someone caught with steroids.

Mormecks unifying at Cruser but won't be considered because of the unfashionable division.

Tarver should be considered (and I rate a past it Jones at least on par with a past it Zoo) but won't be - Johnsons not just a good win because of him Ko'ing Jones he also beat our own Woods whos been proved world class - unfashionable again.

So its between Hatton, PBF, Winky. I'd say Winky has the best wins with Ricky having the most shocking win and PBF has looked the best. PBF and Hatton are the most fashionable fighters.

Jones on a par with Tszyu? Rubbish, Jones was coming off 2 KO defeats Tszyu had just blasted Mitchell.

I honestly don't think that it will be Winky. The Mosley fights won't be considered as they didn't happen in 2005 and Soliman is not an opponent expected to give Winky too much difficulty. The shut out of Trinidad was a good win but not enough to win this award - Hatton won two of the four major belts this year.

Its my personal opinion you don't have to agree. Zoo would get stopped by the elite 140s/147s at the moment too. Jones was P4P a different league to Zoo but was of course more shot, he also beat Tarver in the first fight.

Ricky had 1 great win and a win against a journeyman standard fighter. So they're pretty close imo if your comparing win for win - Trinidad also blasted Mayorga in 6rounds so is definately the same level as Zoo. I don't know if they'd give it to a boring fighter like Winky though.

Trinidad v Mayorga was a size mismatch & was tailor made for Tito. Mayorga should never have been fighting at 160 lbs. Tszyu beat Mitchell who was IBF champion and on a long winning streak. Both fighters were also at their correct weights.

Well Trinidad could still make 154 (where Mayorgas now fighting) - he weighed in at 157 looking soft so the size disparity isn't too much. Mitchell really lost against gatekeeper Ndou - and would lose to all of the top5 and is past his best without any top class wins whereas Mayorga beat Forrest and should of beat Spinks.

Bare in mind beating Trinidad puts Winky in the seat to be an ATG at 154 - the fight was for the 154lb titles in my mind as much as Corrales-Castillo2 was for lightweight supremecy

I would say its between Hatton, Judah, Wright and Taylor. For me, Lacy should be given it - he has brought life back to the Super Middleweight devision and has looked so impressive against geniune top tenners in Reid and Pemberton. I doubt it will be enough though.

Well why wasn't the fight made at 154 lbs so? You have to admit that the limit of 160 lbs heavily favoured Trinidad. Mayorga had previously only fought once at 154 lbs! And yes, even if Trinidad weighed in at 157 lbs, that 3lbs still would have made a big difference.

And it's premature to call Winky an all time great. He beat an old version of Mosley (who was at his best at 135 lbs) and used the perfect tactics against an underprepared Trinidad with no plan B. What other big name natural light middleweight did Winky fight against? Answer to that is Vargas who he lost against and Vargas was then destroyed by prime Trinidad & prime DLH. Plus his fight against Trinidad was at Middleweight! To say he is an all time great at light middleweight is taking the piss.

I would put it between Hatton, Taylor and Tarver and agree that it depends on the Taylor Vs Hopkins match.

Also Sports Personality voting is now open

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/tv_and_ ... 353078.stm

Hopefully Ricky will make the live vote nominations.

I would vote for Hatton to be sports personality of the year but would like nothing more than to see Titus Bramble win it.

If anyone else also feels that this mans achivements need recognition then do what i've done and vote Bramble!!!

Doubt PBF will get too many votes - too many writers pissed off with his "choice" of opponents: he turned down Zab and took on a faded Mitchell instead.
And Wright's latest underwhelming opponent cancels out Hatton facing a "journeyman" - Maussa was coming off a shocking upset and on a high, plus held a world title. Can't say the same for Sam.

For me it has to be Hatton, with Taylor on hold for top spot depending on how he wins, or loses, on Sat.

I think he'll beat Hop - but even if he wins in style, there'll be a lot of writers/voters who thought he lost the first one.

And wasn't Ricky a bigger underdog v Tszyu than Taylor was?

Hatton all the way baby :TU:

Trinidad-Wright are the 2 best LMWs of a generation - fact - therefore Wrights win is historical. Eubank and Benns better achievements are at Super Middle - but these solidify why they are top middleweights. If Hatton moved upto 147 to beat Mayweather in his next fight - it would solidify greatness as a 140lber more than a great Welterweight. And if you didnt know Winky-Vargas could of gone either way.

And Trinidad was always small at 160 - he came back at middleweight because he'd acheived everything he wanted too at 154 and wanted to build a legacy at 160 not because he couldnt make 154.
