Top 10 FAVOURITE heavyweight boxers

Post by Duch »

This time it's not about skills, it's not about how good they were (but it still can matter); it's about how these 10 boxers were great to watch, it's about how do you like them. This time it's very subjective list. This time you can appreciate more warriors with heart. You can choose them because they had something which brought your attention and force you to watch more their fights and support them. Skills can matter but this time it doesn't have to be the most important value.

What is your top 10 and why?

In no particular order:

-Joe Frazier (great style, great fights, nuff' said)

-Jack Dempsey (see my username?)

-Ken Norton (entertaining come forward style with boxing skill, always gave 110%)

-Eddie Machen (love seeing a peak Machen on film; sublime skills)

-Derrick Jefferson (can't think of a dull fight he was ever in; the ultimate crowd-pleasing HW)

-Jack Sharkey (like Machen; just love seeing the guy's skills at his peak, boxer par excellence)

-Renaldo Snipes (rarely in a bad match; always came to fight)

-Max Baer (great character, but also under-rated warrior spirit. His first fight with Nova is one of the most brutal slugfests you'll ever see)

-Max Schmeling (great story, subtle skills, love the historical backdrop of his career)

-Sam Langford (ATG lb for lb; fascinating career in a great time period)

In no particular order

Ali (some boring fights, but amazing skills, entertaining personality)
Frazier
Foreman (largely for his personality and comeback)
Louis
Lewis (could be boring at times, explosive at others, mostly a classy guy)
Tyson
Douglas (again, for that one great performance)
Shavers
Holyfield (reluctantly, I hated his headbutting and god bothering but he was in some highly entertaining fights)
Patterson

Floyd Patterson - Always a gentleman, got right back in the ring after losses that would've sent other fighters into retirement.

Larry Holmes - Hero of my youth, got up when knocked down, proud of his work, shrewd businessman.

Lennox Lewis - Did almost everything right, especially getting the lineal title back on track by fighting Shannon Briggs, last man to defeat Vitali Klitschko.

Muhammad Ali - For being Ali.

Gerry Cooney - I, for one, think Cooney was very well managed. If the name of the boxing management game is to get the most money for the least risk, that is. I respect that. But I respect him a lot more for starting F.I.S.T.

Chris Byrd - For being a "little guy" who used skill and slickness to slay monsters.

Joe Louis - Did the job, no B.S.

Randall 'Tex' Cobb - For his quick wit. Extra points for his durability.

Tim Tomashek - For the Tommy Morrison post-fight interview & subsequent appearance on Letterman. See Tex Cobb.

Vitali Klitschko - I like both Klitschko brothers for always being dedicated and in shape. Since I've only got one spot left I'm going to give it to Vitali for his effort as a last minute sub against Lewis and for never losing again.
