Can Lee Selby win a world title ?
Can Lee Selby win a world title ?
Reading the RBR seemed a mixed opinion on this.
For me I'm unsure, he has ability it but to me he has always been too reliant on having a good chin at the level he has been in with, I think that could be his downfall at world level.
I'll be honest I'm not too familiar with Featherweights at World Level one I have seen a few fights of is Orlando Salido who is hard as nails I'd love to see him v Selby but think it is highly unlikely.
Next couple of fights should give a clearer picture.
Thoughts ??

Can he win a world title, id say yes.
Can he be the main man in the division or another division. Id say no.

without being rude about this, I find these subjects are not really worth talking about. For me to win a world title you have to be number 1 in the world, that means you are the best fighter in your weight division. There are so many titles to be had you do not have to be in the top 20 to get a title fight, lets face it you could well be ranked 20 by 1 organisation and number 2 by another, and number 26 by another. You can lose 20 fights and still be ranked 5 by another organisation.
I would rather see a thread like this be:
Can Lee Selby be the best fighter in the world in his weight division?
The answer would be no, so isnt that a fair reflection?
Anyone in boxing can win a world title regardless of whom they are.

Re: Can Lee Selby win a world title ?
I think the divisions too deep with the likes of Salido, Donaire, Lomachenko, Mares, Gonzalez, Ponce de Leon and a few others, plus the possibility of Rigondeaux moving up for him to win a world title.

I'd back Selby over Vetyeka for the WBA strap.

With a Matchroom ref and judges, in Wales, probably.

I haven't seen loads of Vetyeka but his defence looks fairly poor and his work rate isn't the greatest. He likes to move so if Selby cut off the ring and pressured him against the ropes I can see him getting a legitimate win.mickey1975 wrote:With a Matchroom ref and judges, in Wales, probably.

I voted Yes, but get less convinced of Selby's ability every time I see him fight, I could see him having a similar 'world title' reign as Cleverly, i.e. Winning a vacant minor strap & defending it until getting exposed by the first genuine world level opponent he faced.
Re: Can Lee Selby win a world title ?
I voted yes simply because with so many 'world titles' available and with the right manoeuvring by his promotional team, it's bound to happen.
Probably the best question to ask is will he win an interim, regular or super world title!

Vetyeka is one of those who is "better than he looks", I'd fancy him over Selby with out many problems.ttornado wrote:I haven't seen loads of Vetyeka but his defence looks fairly poor and his work rate isn't the greatest. he's on good form at the moment, with stoppages over chris john and daud yordan. slick and fighting with some spite.ttornado wrote:I'd back Selby over Vetyeka for the WBA strap.

Definitely slick at times especially in the Yordan fight. But seemed to lack defensive skills that his movement made up for. Remove his ability to move out of trouble, I think his chins open.Autobarn wrote:he's on good form at the moment, with stoppages over chris john and daud yordan. slick and fighting with some spite.ttornado wrote:I'd back Selby over Vetyeka for the WBA strap.
Re: Can Lee Selby win a world title ?
He can win a world title but only because there are a multitude of world titles available. In the days of the big 3 he would have been a contender, that's all.
Re: Can Lee Selby win a world title ?
The feather weight division is not what it used to be i had to look up who the champions were. It hard to say how good selby is, i would keep him away from Gonzalez
Re: Can Lee Selby win a world title ?
I could see him beating champs like Gradovich and Veteyka if he fought them.
Re: Can Lee Selby win a world title ?
The days of the so called big 3 lasted 5 years and there's only 4 now, ignoring WBU, WBF, IBO, IBA etc.rhino222 wrote:He can win a world title but only because there are a multitude of world titles available. In the days of the big 3 he would have been a contender, that's all.

Agreed.
With the right match making he could pick up a belt for sure. But being no.1 would mean besting the likes of Donaire, Gonzalez, Mares & De Leon. I don't see him ever getting to that "elite" level. He is a quality fighter but is a few levels below the likes of Donaire (which is no shame!).
Re: Can Lee Selby win a world title ?
in fairness can't really argue with this. Its one of boxings biggest problems there isn't 'The man' in every division and the fights to determine who 'the man' is aren't being made.mimmy123 wrote:without being rude about this, I find these subjects are not really worth talking about. Though I would lovelovelovelovelove them to go a bit mental & offer Jhonny Gonzalez a shitload of dosh to come over, because he's my favourite active non-shot fighter & I'd like to see him KO someone live.
Re: Can Lee Selby win a world title ?
Agreed on Gonzalez.
Number 1 in the world is a bit arbitrary though, to whose thinking? Some magazine that gives out belts? Some twerp with a spreadsheet?
That said I find the post a bit weird, given his obsessional postings/threads about some fighters.

Re: Can Lee Selby win a world title ?
lee Selby's got some great wins - munroe, simpson, smith, by KO & Lindsay on points.
that smith win looks really good now.
why don't we wait & see - we know how fighters can go from domestic to euro, and from euro to world. seen it happen enough times in the 10 or so yrs I've been posting here, some guys you expect, some guys you wouldn't.

IMO Gradovich grinds him down and Vetyeka mentally wastes him...crusader wrote:I could see him beating champs like Gradovich and Veteyka if he fought them.
