and? my problem is the attitude and temperament of Yorkshire fighters who often taking a losing mentality overseas at the first sign of something going wrong - when it matters in the big fights. earlier I made a point of giving credit (nelson-Thompson, witter-harris, woods-hoye) to brilliant performances at home - not as rhetoric, but to show how these guys are capable of much better.Parson Cross wrote:Yep you've only got to look at how Barker took it to Sturm to realise this is a Yorkshire thing.
Answer the question Autobarn name another UK World Champion who got on his bike more than Nelson.
what's Londoner barker's injury defeat vs sturm got to do with anything? look at his previous fight, 1000 punch war with a talented title holder geale, in America. can you recall a Yorkshire fighter of recent, defending away from home, even ENGAGING, TRADING punches? never mind at least 500 of 'em? come on someone, name a big fight when a Yorkshire fighter traded punches, got in serious exchanges, with passion, conviction & a positive attitude in the period to which I've been referring?
did I say losing badly was exclusive to Yorkshire and performing positively was exclusive to Lancashire?
nelson was on the road a lot because no one wanted him a) after the poor challenges to de leon & warring; and b) after the dreadful draw with Guillermo jones in "defense" of the WBO cruiserweight title, admittedly a bad time in nelson's life because of the kidnap plot against him. warren let other promoters have nelson's late world title defences - how often does a UK promoter with a world champ stop staging their fights. these fights were not against the best of opposition. it could be argued nelson never had a Big fight - he was the only one who didn't unify 'round 2004/5 when things were happening. nelson didn't start punching cantatore 'til about round 4 and he was very reluctant to produce v petkovic. what'd he've been like vs bell/mormeck/Braithwaite - I'd expect the kind of negative showings I've been talking of. Guillermo jones, aforementioned, fit very well into this scene of exciting cruiserweight fighters, overcoming injury and big punches to stop Braithwaite in the states, stopping very aggressive popular home fighter arslan in Germany, lebedev in Russia...

I thought Barker quit in America versus Martinez and the Sturm fight speaks for itself. I guess one out of three isn't bad...Autobarn wrote:and? my problem is the attitude and temperament of Yorkshire fighters who often taking a losing mentality overseas at the first sign of something going wrong - when it matters in the big fights. earlier I made a point of giving credit (nelson-Thompson, witter-harris, woods-hoye) to brilliant performances at home - not as rhetoric, but to show how these guys are capable of much better.Parson Cross wrote:Yep you've only got to look at how Barker took it to Sturm to realise this is a Yorkshire thing.

Re: Eddie Hearn offers $5 million to Khan for Brook
well I just gave an example of fighters from Manchester taking a more positive approach, giving themselves a better chance to win. hatton scraping by collazo, blown away by pacquiao, outboxed by mayweather - wasn't for lack of trying. and if you look at the more successful overseas showings, malingaggi, Castillo, there's nothing wrong with his attitude when he steps in that ring.
doesn't get much more negative than Rhodes-alvarez, woods-tarver, witter-alexander. did these guys give themselves even a chance of winning? and could they afford to lose those fights?
answer my question, a Yorkshire fighter, traded shots, got his body weight forward, put in a rally, swung in vain, went for it against all odds, when things were going wrong, rather than accept defeat. of recent.
didn't barker's HIP go vs sturm? or was it his attitude?

Re: Eddie Hearn offers $5 million to Khan for Brook
Jennings never should've been ranked for his title shot. he was in way over his head. there was nothing anyone could do and it appeared he'd been trained to survive.
witter was in a title elim vs ndou and after dominating, when ndou fought back, failed to make a serious stand. against alexander, he was an ex champ, it was an important fight, he was negative.
woods took his title over to America, a title he'd won on 4th try, and didn't show killer instinct, didn't rally hard, vs tarver.
Rhodes was on the back foot all night vs alvarez. it was his 2nd title shot since Otis grant a long time ago. when did he grab for it? Rhodes had won a brutal elim, in a brilliant performance vs Jamie moore, to get this chance.
re ingle - oh, did I? or did I just not lump ingle with the Sheffield lot who get mardy when their opponent takes over?
back to bidness - no I still don't think kell brook really wants a title shot away from home. be glad to be proven wrong though. what a waste, not getting his name out there, missing out on the broner cash cow.

Mccormack - down and won by KO
Valuev - Won comfortably
Klitschko - epic fail

So, basically all British boxers from all areas have had mixed results?bigB wrote:Could throw Haye in the mix if where talking about at the very top level and travelling he is 2-1

P.s Haye didn't beat Valuev comfortably, I thought he was lucky to get it.

good answer - 1997 & 2002. quite a long time ago.Pugilist-specialist wrote:Kelly v Hamedmickey1975 wrote:I already did, Paul Ingle, and you said you don't count him because he's exciting!Autobarn wrote:well I just gave an example of fighters from Manchester taking a more positive approach, giving themselves a better chance to win. hatton scraping by collazo, blown away by pacquiao, outboxed by mayweather - wasn't for lack of trying. and if you look at the more successful overseas showings, malingaggi, Castillo, there's nothing wrong with his attitude when he steps in that ring.

don't know if anyone watched nelson vs sellers. johnny got the win, but it was agonising. ppl were praying for him to punch and it was looking worrying. it wasn't exactly positive. I won't say it was a lucky punch but it was a shot in the eye, not like he followed through with a great shot to the jaw. it was a great result but that shot in the eye - legal shot, I know - came as a relief as it wasn't one of johnny's best showings. temperament was an issue and the sky sports commenters often came out with, "it's boxing, he has to start throwing punches at some point" and this I'm sure was one of those fights.

the issue I'm bringing up isn't results, it's attitude, temperament.mickey1975 wrote:So, basically all British boxers from all areas have had mixed results?bigB wrote:Could throw Haye in the mix if where talking about at the very top level and travelling he is 2-1

there are lots of issues that have affected the career of haye, such as injury (the most recent).
but weight has surely been the main factor with hayemaker - too big for cruiser, too small for heavy.
gets heavyweight paydays but can't trade with the big boys and often can't reach them.

Whatever our disagreements I am shocked that you pick a drugs cheat over Nelson.
Guillermo Jones tested positive after the fight and was duly banned.

yes, but then he moved on and did some things, fighting positively (a loaded word, now!) away from home, in the hard mix.
jones cheated and so did the judges.
