Ali's Greatest Hits !
Re: Ali's Greatest Hits !
Very few opponents of Ali ever assessed him as "feather fisted", though many boxing fans have heard that rumor repeated by those who sort of "claim to know". But very few of his opponents ACTUALLY said those words. And of course we have a contributor who chronically and erroneously attributes such words to many of his opponents that did not actually speak such things.
I'm satisfied that even the very controversial "third rail to discuss" punch that discombobulated Liston was a genuine event that did damage. Albeit not by any physics Ali understood, he was as likely surprised as anyone that it had that damaging affect. But any serious study of that film confirms it, purely on a physics basis. It only becomes subjective in the hands of those who feel that these laws would not have applied to Liston. And of course just what recuperative powers he may have possessed at that particular moment to rise above the disorientation he was experiencing.
Ali was able to throw remarkably powerful punches without always having to assume the perfect stance purely due to speed and athleticism. He could also have the accumulative affect of a swarmer such as Joe Frazier on his opponent after many rounds, as shown by the condition of Lyle, Bonavena, Foreman, Frazier, Shavers after weathering a bout with this guy.
He'd be a whole lot less controversial in the minds of many, if he would have just been a typical army guy, nice to women, of the right persuasion, and of course a good Christian. All things I have come to peace with in terms of not clouding my view of his boxing talent.
His main detractor on our board even adds another bigotry, that of class, money class that is. Their are some who just can't divorce themselves of the belief that money corrupts everything. And I reluctantly agree that it often can. But sometimes a cigar, is nothing more than a cigar. Such as in the case of this very talented HW.

Clay was a puppet for the Nation of Islam. But he did his job, and he did his job well.
You may consider it one of his "greatest hits." I don't.

Re: Ali's Greatest Hits !
I don't think Liston II was on the up and up, but I do think its indisputable Ali was a much harder puncher than given credit for. He often turned whole fights around with one punch, which feather-fisted guys simply don't do. Despite the often popular sentiment to the contrary, for example, I think he clearly hit harder than Holmes. Holmes would unload the kitchen sink on guys with less than granite chins and they'd keep coming, whereas once Ali really opened up on guys they often didn't last long. But especially in the latter half of his career, he didn't show that level of aggression often because he was seeking to conserve energy.

Really enjoying these pictures. Please, keep them coming.
I wonder if there's a shot of that hook that ended Bonavena? Short punch meets iron jaw, the end. Incredible.

I thought he was a Black Minister, for the Nation of Islam.
To promote peace and good will.
There seems to be a lot of viciousness in those punches, and hate in the eyes.
Maybe he became a Black Minister to get out of the..................... ;;-)
There is a word for you.....but it may not have been found yet.
