March 28, 1923 Card

Post by Ric »

Would those with ProQuest access or hard-copies of The New York Times check the results of this date. There was a show at the Rink Sporting Club, Brooklyn - a benefit for the American Fund for Devastated France. None of these bouts are in the database, and they include Luis Angelo Firpo, Jack Britton, Frankie Genaro, and others. Were these exhibition bouts? Or legitimate?

These were exhibition bouts. Firpo for example went 4 exh rounds with Jim hibard.

I had the date as March 29 -- one day off, as usual!

The odd thing is, the NYT reports that Firpo didn't want to go on, and was forced to by the Boxing Commission, who threatened to suspend him if he didn't appear. Can they do that for EXHs?

Well, Nippon has it in the database as a KO-2. (I corrected the date from the 29th to the 28th and added the venue.) If these were indeed exhibitions, why were decisions announced by the judges? Why were there even judges? For example, for the Jack Britton-Elino Flores bout: "The judges called it a draw." Lew Chester "received the judges decision over Battling Anton." :-?
