To be fair to Thompson, he won the first 3 rounds against Pulev. He found him quite hard to work out I think. Even Wlad found him quite hard to tag consistently. He's definietly short of the top of the heavyweight division but he's pretty cagey.SamWise72 wrote:Fury is a useless boxer, but still better than Thompson, who is just horrible. All Fury has to do is stick out his job and throw the occasional right, a la Wlad, and he wins with ease. Thompson isn't really a big puncher, and whilst I know Tyson 's chin isn't great, he's game and would get up and win. Pulev showed that Thompson is essentially very easy to outbox. Pulev is much better than Fury, but Fury is good enough. What a crock the heavy division is right now.

Who's good in the heavyweight division then?SamWise72 wrote:Fury is a useless boxer, but still better than Thompson, who is just horrible.
Pulev was having a nightmare against Thompson in the first half of the fight. Pulev only took over in the second half because Thompson got tired.SamWise72 wrote:Pulev showed that Thompson is essentially very easy to outbox. Pulev is much better than Fury, but Fury is good enough.

Exactly. When Fury has his head on he is very good. He has the power, the size and his hands are reasonably fast. Problem is that he is as thick as the proverbial two short planks. The guy just wants to fight and brawl at all costs. Not the smartest but he should beat Thompson with the weapons he has.
Re: Fury - Thompson
Thompson got tired and couldn't keep doing what he was doing previously. Pulev hardly put on a boxing masterclass.keithmoonhangover wrote:And Pulev found his range and got his timing right. It's a 12 round fight, not a six rounder.

For what it's worth I think Fury would win a whopping wide UD vs The Tiger much like he did vs Kingpin & Chisora.
Tony doesn't hit hard enough to keep Fury honest in my opinion.
I think David Price flattered The Tiger's 'punch power' - Price's amateur record should tell you that his chin was super shaky. Hell even with headgear on Varghese Johnson put him down 3 times in 3 rounds and a 17 year old Fury floored Price. He has pretty much the most delicate HW chin going ...
Re: Fury - Thompson
He's nothing of the sort. He's a reasonable spoiler, hard to hit cleanly, at the best. Who's good in the heavyweight division? Nobody that I've seen. Joshua might shape into something decent, so might Hughie, but at the top, the only person I feel any desire to watch is Pulev. He's not going to set the world on fire, but he's at least competent and shows desire (Thompson never looks like he wants to win, not even against Price). I've been watching boxing since 81, and I've never seen the heavyweights this bad. Fury at his best is just a big lump who can push out a jab (he has heart, I'll give him that). I'm actually wishing for a return to Tony Tubbs and Greg Page.Horse wrote:SamWise72 suggested otherwise.keithmoonhangover wrote:Thompson's a good boxer. Re: Fury - Thompson
My issue with Thompson is this....
He beat a mechanical tinman twice, which proves nothing except that a calm, collected boxer will always beat someone who uses size, muscle alone. The proof, to an extent, was in Thompson's fight with Pulev--- a fight where his age, wear and tear, showed where he gave up the last few rounds to a much younger man who was more his own size.
Fury on the other hand has shown the ability to get off the floor and win, unlike Price. Fury has shown he can fight comfortably for twelve rounds if need be--- unlike Price. Fury has demonstrated that he can slug and box against better competition than Price has. The question, then is, is Fury in the same class as someone like Kubrat Pulev?
Well if wins mean anything, Fury has defeated Chisora, who was robbed against Helenius. Fury has defeated Cunningham, who was robbed against Adamek. Fury has sparred with guys like Eddie Chambers, who has fought Wladimir Klitschko, Deontay Wilder, etc. Fury has also sparred with guys like Helenius and Scott, etc. and the majority of those men will attest Fury is either A) one of the top five best heavyweights in the world, B) he isnt far from it.
The real question, for me concerning this hypothetical match up is.... how much left does a man in his 40's, who is not in the best of physical shape, in this sport? Thompson can spout off and say he's in the best shape of his career, because he fights better when he's heavier, etc. but before the Price bouts he was completely written off here in America as a has-been, and when he won the first time most of us over here assumed it was a fluke, a freak incident--- until the second match proved all the more just how inadequate Price was.
Thompson, some may argue is the best American heavyweight, but I don't think this is correct. Sure, I believe Thompson has enough saavy and experience to befuddle types like Price--- big, strong men who rely on only their power (Deontay Wilder maybe?) but Fury is something a little different. He's a giant with mobility--- he's a giant who can switch from orthodox to southpaw--- he's a giant who is almost thirty years younger than Tony Thompson. I think Peter Fury would tell Tyson: "Jab, jab, jab, move around, and take no chances," and we would see a fight much like the Kevin Johnson bout.

Yep, I'd assume Fury wins on points, possible late stoppage but looks terrible in doing so (even Wlad didn't look amazing against him - no one does)keithmoonhangover wrote:Thompson's a good boxer. Re: Fury - Thompson
Thompson would be a gruelling fight for Fury and you could see Fury been put down but Tyson's got a lot of heart and his sheer size would take it's toll on The Tiger .
Fury MD .
It's a fight I'd like to see after Joey Dumbell

if fury survives the first 6 rounds i would give him a chance, but that's a big if, he can't take a punch and hasn't fought anyone good, certainly not of thompson's caliber even at 40 odd

There is a big difference between not being able to take a punch and getting knocked down,Fury gets up,his legs are there under him and he carries on and wins, until i see otherwise i think his chin is ok,also he has plenty of heart, couldn't really see Thompson beating him to be honest.limey wrote:if fury survives the first 6 rounds i would give him a chance, but that's a big if, he can't take a punch and hasn't fought anyone good, certainly not of thompson's caliber even at 40 odd

Considering his size, Thompson is a pretty well schooled boxer. You remember the same era I do, but back then, guys that were the size of Fury, Price, Thompson and the Klitschkos, were terrible fighters - remember Mike 'The Giant' White?SamWise72 wrote:He's nothing of the sort. I do know he went ten or eleven rounds with Michael Moorer.

The argument is, Fury has yet to share the ring with a genuine puncher. Not saying Thomson is, he isn't, but its one thing that Fury lacks on his record.bigjack wrote:There is a big difference between not being able to take a punch and getting knocked down,Fury gets up,his legs are there under him and he carries on and wins, until i see otherwise i think his chin is ok,also he has plenty of heart, couldn't really see Thompson beating him to be honest.limey wrote:if fury survives the first 6 rounds i would give him a chance, but that's a big if, he can't take a punch and hasn't fought anyone good, certainly not of thompson's caliber even at 40 odd
If he's getting dropped by fighters who aren't exactly murderous punchers, how will his chin stand up once he does face someone who really can hit? Its not ridiculous to expect he may struggle to get up then.

I'd favor Thompson. As Fury said, "I hate southpaws they're a nightmare."

Fury is not World class, hes Euro at best. Lets not forget John McD beat him in their first fight but didnt get the decision. Fury hasnt improved a great deal and thats going to be proven.
