Thomas Hearns v. Wilfred Benitez

Post by iceman21287 »

How in the world did Lou Filippo, who is usually a pretty good judge, score this bout 142-142?

This has been really bugging me for a couple of days now...I've watched the fight over and over again and I can't see how anyone can score it lower than 143-140 for Hearns. I personally scored it 145-138 for Hearns, giving Benitez the 8th, 9th (10-8), and 13th rounds. I scored the 4th (9-9) and 10th rounds even.

Did anyone else score this bout a draw...or worse yet...give Benitez the win? Maybe I'm missing something that 1/3 of the people out there saw?

Going from memory, I believe I scored it 147-140 for Hearns (9-3-3 on rounds)

Wasen't Benitez credited with a very questionable knockdown ? If I remember right, I refused to score that a 10-8 round.

Yeah...Hearns was also credited with a farily questionable knockdown...whenever I watch the fight again I either score both rounds 10-8 or 10-9

Hearns was also deducted a point...in the fourth round I believe (going off memory)...in a questionable choice by the judge.

Well, that fight was much closer than the Hearns v. Benitez fight. To me, the draw for Benitez is equivalent to the judge that scored for Holyfield in the first Lewis fight.

I'm a huge Benitez fan, but even with my biased view so Benitez lose that fight.

One thing I would like to comment on is that Benitez made a prime Hearns hit nothing but air while Benitez stood right in front of him, I thought that was amazing. And If I remember correctly Benitez knocked down Hearns and I remember it was a legit knockdown. But I do recall thinking Hearns won the fight, seemed like a close fight to me.

Everyone will turn in a bad card eventually if they score enough fights. Maybe he had other things on his mind, maybe he was feeling ill, maybe he just had an off night.

I haven't watched the fight for years but from memory I thought Hearns pretty much dominated without landing anything big against the cagey Benitez.
