87th New York Daily New Golden Gloves

Post by gmfatts »

This week The New York Golden Gloves kicked off at B.B. Kings, as usual featuring
152 open and the 165 open. Last years 152 novice champ Beka Gulbatashvili got a tough draw for his fist open fight at 152
Drawing Chordale Booker ranked #2 in the country. Beka lost a split decision 2-1.
This year they are no longer counting punches to score the fights they have changed to a round by round scoring system.
We will see how this works out.
Tonight 1/31/2014 the Gloves continues at Bishop Kearny H.S. in Brooklyn
152 novice scheduled to go at it..... Keep an eye on last years 152 novice semi-finalist Dominique White it might be his year.

Wonder if they will broadcast the Finals this year, was quite disappointed that they didn't choose to do so last year...

I hope we see some surprises this year, Gloves were a bit of a letdown last year...

As for the Open Classes, I think 114 will come down to Khalid Twati or Christopher Colbert...141 I see either Tyrone James or Jayquran Hazel taking it...152 Brian Ceballo has to be the favorite although he's shown he can be upset (lookout for Chordale Booker and Gloves veteran Jeremy Fiorentino).

Don't see anyone at 165 beating #1 ranked LeShawn Rodriguez, not a deep division and LeShawn lets his hands go...

Not aware of 178 this year...doubt anyone beats Earl Newman at 201

I only see 141 or 152 as intriguing divisions...hopefully we see some new talent rise up

Mike Stoute (123 Open) looked very good last night in Hempstead, LI...quick sharp punches, turning his opponent, his defense looked superb, you wudda thought you were watching an amateur version of Pernell Whitaker at times lol...

123 should come down to Stoute, Jaime Estrada, and Juan Roman...Estrada won last night, Roman was in a real tough fight which plenty of people thought he lost but he got the decision...maybe that'll light the fire under him again, he's a past champ as well as Estrada...
