***OFFICIAL*** HOF Nominations: Gibbons & Charles

Post by Crease »

And so the two greatest fighters of this season. Compare and contrast their records and have your say.
Who deserves to be entered into the HOF? Only one of them? Or neither? Or both?

There has been a lot of confusion surrounding both of them over the past week but both of their completed records are there for you to see and their statistics.

I have DELETED the previous Gibbons & Charles HOF threads as they did not have a poll in them, they were just a build up to this.

This thread will run for 10 days.

PLEASE write down who you voted for.

Whilst comparing their records, I noticed that there was a certain amount of "one up man ship" between them.

Gibbons scored two wins more than Charles.
Gibbons got one more World Title than him.
Gibbons finished first in the Super Six, to Charles' second.
Charles won by KO 7 times, Gibbons won 5.
Both men achieved 15 consecutive successful title defences.

For me, Gibbons winning The Super Six underlined his position as The Number One Man of the season.
And his record is astonishing, so I'd definitely vote YES for him.

Ezzard Charles was not the same man after he lost his unified title, but his winning run from Week 6 to Week 22 was something that hasn't been seen since the days of Tiger Jack Fox - especially when you focus in on him beating Tunney, then Spinks, then Moore, then Langford in four weeks.
For me, that is definitely the stuff of HOF legend.

Not to forget, then he finished second in the Super Six to a guy who is in all likely hood gonna be a HOFer. And there aint nothing wrong with that.

So I'm voting YES for Ezzard as well.

One last thing I would say (and yes, I realise I am pushing for Ezzard here) but in my humble opinion he had a more difficult run of fights compared yo Gibbons... Tommy's record was superior in the end, but was he really that much ahead of Charles?

For me, I don't think so.

Interesting Bivins owns wins over both men. Only man who can claim such an honor

They each hold wins over each other.

I gotta say Yes to both. Gibbons is the clear #1 man, but Charles was right behind him...that loss to that loser Old Stribling has him on the fence for me though. I'm tempted to say no just for that alone...but I guess I'll let it slide, and say yes. It's a razor thin yes.

Yes to both

Yes indeed, and Jimmy beat them both twice!

We've already had a vote on Jimmy and he did not get in - Jimmy did well beating these two titans (twice) and whilst he was not granted access to The Hall - he did get richly paid for it - he ended the season with an accumulation of six World Titles.

I think that, in the end we can all recognise that Jimmy excelled but he didn't dominate the Sim they way that the two guys above did...
And it's probably symbolic that he got the bronze medal in the Super Six between "the big two".

I see another difference. Gibbons was only Knocked down once by Harold Johnson....and never stopped in the entire season.

Which is I guess why he holds the edge in most rounds fought.

I see that Gibbons STOPPED both Bivin and Charles at least once during the season.

No on Charles. Although he had a really nice run, for a large part ending the season, he was only a .500 fighter. When you look at his season as a whole, I'd have to say no. Good season, but not H.O.F. type worthy.

Gibbons I'm on the fence on. He was the best this season, but does that make him a HOF'er? He has quite a few average opponents, and at times avoided a top challenge. I am 60/40 saying no....

I know exactly what you mean Mr Geto. When I looked at Charles' record I was very impressed with his title run - and despite the fact he went off the boil - he was still able to finish second in the Super Six m- that's pretty impressive stuff.

In terms of Gibbons - I can recognise that he had a great season but perversely when I read his record I didn't fee as inspired due to the fact that he didn't beat top opposition a the way through his unified title reign.

Of course, polls like this are always relative and different for everyone. And that's only what I think.

No on both. Good, but not HoF worthy.

Point of order.....

Wouldn't the "both of them" column need to populate a vote for each fighter?

The polls should have been a simple yes or no for each man to get in, to avoid confusion. Even with the polls as they are, to me, it's enough to have neither man in.

Yeah Gibbons has nine votes... The "both" option constitutes a "yes" vote fort each man.

And we've got three days left in the poll.

Hate to say it, but when the people are right they are right. It was a HOF season, but it didnt necessarily have HOF worthy fighters.

One day to go... Less than 24 hours in fact.

Seriously guys, if you have not given voice to your thoughts, you really need to do it now and have your vote. Because tomorrow the poll will close and you will have left it too late.
