Jersey Joe vs Joe Frazier

Post by AngryGoon38 »

The Frazier-Marciano thread got me thinking of this one. Most pick Frazier over Marciano, some stating size to be the deciding factor edge for Frazier. how about Jersey Joe ? He's just about 200 lbs, stands a good 6-1 with decent reach, great check left hook(See his knockdowns against Louis,Charles, and Marciano himself, plus his outboxing the Rock for a solid full 12 rounds, would've been a UD win for Joe had they fought post 15 championship bouts).Jersey Joe's prime went from the Louis fight in 47 to those first 12 rounds of the 1st Marciano epic fight. Assuming we have either the vs Louis or Vs Marciano I version of Jersey Joe or him somewhere in between that span, how would you see this one playing out ?

I could see Jersey Joe's style doing very effective against the very aggressive Frazier style.
Reason, effective timing and counterpunching. Jersey Joe is more scientific and methodical wheras Frazier is more Push and shove, obviously fist wise but push and shove is basically his mode.Rush in and keep chopping, keep smokin, keep pushing forward, constant aggression, forsake cautioness,go reckless defense abandonment mode, please the crowd, give em a show, thats basically Joe..Frazier,wheras Jersey Joe would be much more defensive minded and rely alot on timing and countering, letting Smokin Joe throw, throw away, and just focus on countering. Jersey Joe would have plenty of size and reach, strength, ruggedness, and just very good ring generaliship and savy.

I would predict Jersey Joe to prevail, and obviously mainly because styleistically,i think Frazier would be made to order For Walcott. He would win a 116-112 type decision and deck Frazier a couple times, maybe in one round even. And in a 15 rd'er,he would hang in there, theyr'd be no straight right suzey q from Frazier, just alot of hail mary big looping hooks, which very likely would'nt quite find the mark, even at a tired out Walcott trudging through 13th,14th,and 15th. Walcott would hold on to win in a 15 rd'er,likely win by a couple points. Frazier would rally in the 13th and 14th and both would be tired and just flailing away in the 15th but nothing really effective at that point offensively. All in all an entertaining clash but i really see Walcott having the right stuff in the right ways to edge out Frazier.

It would be an interesting fight, but I just cannot see Walcott holding Frazier at bay for 15 rounds. And if you can't keep prime Frazier off you, doom is in your future.

I disagree that Frazier's style is made to order for Walcott, especially when you factor in 15 rounds and the attrition that Frazier is definitely going to lay on Walcott. Walcott would more than likely look fine against Frazier through possibly the middle of the fight, but it is not going to last. Too much pressure, too much relentlessness. Frazier loved hunting down the slick types, especially his size or smaller, and forcing them to fight. Frazier would force Walcott to fight at a pace he wouldn't like. Jersey Joe would definitely lay some punishment of his own on Smokin' Joe, but not enough to derail him.

Frazier breaks Walcott down and wins fairly late.

Frazier's style was made to order for the big slugger type who could keep Joe off him and stop him with the big bombs. I don't see Walcott as that kind of guy.

Do you mean with a big punch like the one he put on Ezzard?

Sure, it could happen, just like in a bunch of match-ups in the heavies. But it better happen early before Frazier gets to percolating.

My $$$ would definitely be on Frazier in this fight.

The slick moves tend to go out the window when you start hurting and facing the aggression that Smoke could bring.

Just kidding, someone used that generic line in the Duran vs Kalule thread.

I always go with the Odds on ...given all things typical.....which can go haywire in any fight you've got money on. lol. But you'd be crazy not to take Frazier at even money.

I could actually envisage Jersey Joe getting a points decision, it's really not that far fetched...
But I wouldn't bet against Joe winning by KO or TKO in all probability.

Frazier wins by stoppage...but I would pick him against any of the slick boxers. If both men fought the greatest 100 HWs in history their win columns would be roughly even...or at least much closer than I envisage this result.

Frazier KO (, but Jersey Joe would make him work for every punch, every combination he threw. It would be that tough of a matchup for Joe.
