Welterweight prospect Joel Julio

I can't remember what undercard it was on (Margarito-Cintron?) but a few months back I watched a young Colombian named Joel Julio fight against Carlos Vilches. Vilches who had previously gone twelve rounds with Ricky Hatton was being beaten badly and didn't come out of his corner at the end of the 2nd/3rd round. It was an impressive performance of relentless power punching and I took note as somebody to look out for in the future.

Just last week, Max Boxings Tom Gerbasi done an article on him citing him as a future world champion. He's 20 years old, apparently has an amateur record of 85-0, turned pro at 16 where his record stands at 25-0 with 22 KO's.

I know a lot of these Colombian fighters can have great records against very suspicious domestic opponents but under the guidance of Buddy McGirt I really think this guy can can make a name for himself. I've just finished watching his latest fight against Hicklet Lau who had previously only been stopped by Kermit Cintron and in nine rounds and Julio once again impressed me with his head and body power punching and combinations, counter punching and a decent defense. He made quick work of Lau, stopping him in four rounds, putting him down twice in the process.

Anybody else seen Julio yet and what do you make of him? Would be an explosive action packed bout if he were to be put in with Cintron, although that's the last thing the Killer would need being low on confidence after being battered by Margarito. Definitely an exciting prospect to look out for if you haven't seen him yet.

I seen him against Vilches and very very impressed too. I think Vilches retired due to jaw damage but in all honesty he was starting to get beaten up. Julio is very quick on his feet and carries quite a dig. Definately one to keep an eye on.

Sky showed him awhile back, and he looked pretty good. He was very raw when I saw him, but he had some heavy hands, and decent skills. It seems he's starting to make a name for himself, which is understandable considering he's a power puncher.

Yes, he looked awesome vs Vilches - better than a prime Sharmba Mitchell and Ricky Hatton looked vs him.

He is an excellent, exciting prospect.

The Vilches performance is certainly impressive, but not many more names on his record yet, anyway at 20 years old its probably better to give the kid the benefit of the doubt, a few more years and i maybe he'll be the man.

I have not seen Julio but another guy making waves at Lightweight is Edwin Valero, banned form USA after failing a brain scan he fighting out of Japan. He is 16-0 with 16 KO's and all gone in the first round! I have seen him once and he very raw but with clear power as you would expect. What do you think?

This lad is one too look out for mark my words. He fought a couple of nights back stopping a one Hickett Lau in 4 rounds. Lau is no world beater but is notiorusly tough and had taken power puncher kofi Jantauh and Carlos Mausaa the full course.

Yes he looks a live one. The Vilches result was a real eye opener.

Someone said before Ricardo Torres fought Cotto, that historicaly, not too many decent Colombians come around at the same time.
Well it looks like they've got a few at the moment.

I watched Julio v Lau yesterday, and Julio looked good, but he's still raw. He was looking to load up with the right hand every chance he got. He's still very young though, so i'm sure he'll get much better in the next few of years.
