James Toney vs Riddick Bowe

Post by AngryGoon38 »

They both had that certain extra intimidation quality. Toney would be the Fearless Little Lion,Bowe the Big Bully Brute. Very Sad and unfortunate Toney didnt have Certain Management that would've allowed him to campaign at HW back in the 90's. He could've easily started his HW carear back in the Early 90's and would've been plenty acclimated in the best fighting sense after a couple years to start facing smaller Hw opposition like Holyfield,Moorer,Byrd, etc, give a legit account of himself, and then face off against someone Much Bigger but defensively limited Like Riddick Bowe.

I see Toney faring pretty bad against Lennox Lewis,i would really try to avoid that one,had i been Toney's manager or promoter, but i'd definately see a good possibility of him faring quite well against Bowe. Styles make fights and Bowe out of natural overzelous based aggression tendencies would likely remain within Toney's reaching distance and it would quickly become a brawl of attrition. Toney would'nt be so easy for Bowe to connect on.

Bowe didnt have that precise disciplined jab, straight right hand then get out of the way mentality like Lennox Lewis, rather he had that tendency to be Really bent on just Brawling and Slugging away, swinging homerun punches.I think Bowe's style would suite Toney and despite the massive height advantage for Bowe, this would be surprisingly entertaining and competitive. The crowd would no doubt be Pro Toney and this would just be a Very Fiery spirited battle of wills. The outcome is actually very hard to predict. I definately dont see a mismatch of any sort as perhaps plenty would predict i'm sure.

I would've loved to have seen this match and obviously would've Really Enjoyed it if Toney would've someway somehow had Bowe's number and prevailed. Its definately possible, but even if Bowe wound up winning,it would've been a Real Battle and he'd have tons of respect for the Little Tank afterwards saying stuff like,"Man,That Little Toney is a Crazy Little Dude Man !" "This fight was Alot harder than i thought it was gonna be". i could see Toney walking back down the aisle to his dressing room even if he had lost(Likely by spirited (LUd12) effort, the fans would be cheering away chanting Toney,Toney,Toney. :geek:

Toney probably would have survived the bout---he was that talented, tough and defensively skilled.
But the size, power and physical advantages Bowe enjoyed would have all translated into a convincing decision victory.
It would have only been close if Bowe came in grossly out of shape. Of course that's not an impossibility.
After the fight, a beaten Toney would have still derided Bowe as "a girl."

I Love James Toney, but he wouldn't have any chance of victory in this fight. There's a good chance he'd last the distance, but he'd lose at least 9 rounds out of 12. If not even more.

Bowe is a guy that it wouldn't shock me to see stop James.

I see Toney as somewhat Roberto Duranish.
Simply had the skills to survive against much bigger, stronger men.
I remember after Duran went 15 rounds with MMH, a respected Los Angeles boxing scribe opined that Duran would last 15 rounds with Larry Holmes if his only goal was to go the distance. He felt Duran had that much boxing skill.

Toney might have frustrated bowe a bit and if bowe lost his concentration he may have been beatable - but i wouldnt have bet on toney!

I don't see any way Toney beats Bowe. Even if he were fighting the Bowe of the Golota fights I'd still give Bowe the edge.

Assuming this is Bowe during his short prime vs. Toney around the time he stepped in against Evander, I'd go with a comprehensive points win for Bowe.

Just too damn good in every department, and it isn't even really a good style match up for James anyway. I do think he'd last the distance and have some moments here and there, but he'd lose a clear decision.

And I hate saying that, as Toney may well be my favourite fighter, but this is asking a hell of a lot of anyone, let alone a former middleweight.

The best Evander that ever there was lost 2 out of 3 to Bowe. The ghost of Evander lost to Toney.
