Larry Merchant is a terrible commentator

Post by Anzi »

He talks all the way through the fight about rubbish, the Lomachenko v Salido fight was an interesting fight, but Mrchant and his partner ruined it, they even stopped scoring it and gave up after a few rounds and Merchant talks so slowly, you end up virtually falling asleep, whilst waiting for the punch line, he has been like that for years, plus he put's down the fighters all the time, Mayweather was right about him, they should get rid of him, he has too much ego for his own good, he even called Salido an "old goat " during the fight, there was only one old goat at that fight and it was not Salido.

The commentary for the US Saturday night card was terrible. Two old farts spring to mind. From salivating over the 'Corona' girls to breaking the scoring down to every single minute of the fight and constantly telling us how they scored it(every other sentence), not to mention they are biased most of the time.

Did the US get the same commentary that we did on BN? They sound more like the B-team to me. I'm also not a fan of women commentating, in this case Christina P, several times she mentioned what the fighters were wearing in a fashion sense. Bad mix and overall boring.

Merchant and his mate only do the international feed. They work for Top Rank. The Yanks don't get that commentary.

Never been a fan of Merchant, he does know his stuff but his delivery grinds with me.
And don't get me started on Teddy 'I'm never wrong' Atlas

Merchant is barerly alive these days. As for the "Colonel" or whatever they call him, he is terrible.

He had Vera up after 6 rounds against Chavez Jr. I watched the fight and struggled to give Vera anything. I though jr looked excellent in the fight.

Chavez beat him silly in one round and the Colonel said "I`d give that rounde to Vera"

Lol, I know, they had trouble scoring the rounds for the lomachenko fight, so they gave up, never heard that before, they chatted all through the fight about anything.

I always wondered why he spoke so slowly, thought it was just his age, but then i watched some fights from the early 80s, that he was commentating on and he even had a really slow drawl then

It`s a terrible line up that they have. Merchant has done his time, he should be put out to graze.

I want more of the two who called the Taylor v Froch fight. Those guys were epic.

Yanks are always shit commentators, then again the British ones have been going that way for sometime now. Nobody can give an informed view anymore, they all either talk drivel, overemphasise or the most recent one - shout.

Personally I love Larry Merchant, and I find him amusing. I don't get to hear him as much these days because he doesn't work for HBO anymore, but I like hearing him when I do.

I've always heard a lot of people hate on Merchant. I'll never feel that way about him.

I think he's shite as a commentator but like you he I find him quite endearing. I feel the same way about the Sheridan aswell as it goes. I have a feeling that both of them are somewhat hammered whilst commenting aswell

I kind of like Larry but not sure why. One guy I feel gets a lot of hate is Gus Johnson but I think he is good and can't understand the bile. Bernstein is good. I can't really think of any commentators I actively dislike apart from one reedy-sounding UK guy I never remember the name of who I think works for FW but thankfully doesn't seem to get much work. Oh, and John Rawling.

How come Bob Sheridan calls himself 'Colonel' anyway? And Tom Parker for that matter, anyone know?

I find him endearing, and I actually like him as a commentator. He might talk more paired up with Sheridan, but the Merchant I knew at HBO didn't have a whole lot to say and he would just chime in on occasion usually with funny comments.

If a fight is boring, he'll say so. If a fight is great, he'll say so. I've always liked that about him.
